First was probably too long ago to remember but I was at the Rankin Family's first in Whycocomagh.
Best again hard to choose but I'll mention a few:
Clancys and Tommy in Ottawa 1966.
John Allen Cameron with a then unknown Stan Rogers in Port Hawkesbury before the tour of Scotland. Date???
Furey Brothers and Davy Arthur in Halifax, NS in mid 1980's.
Worst or at least my biggest disappointment was George Jones, one of my all time favourites, in Sydney,NS. The oncert was in a hockey rink and the sound was terrible. No Show made it in body but not in spirit. He said he could play all night but left the stage after attempting a few hits.

First: Around 1962, Johnny Burnette, Dorsey Burnette, Johnny Preston (and I think somebody else) at the Kinsman Fieldhouse in Edmonton, Alberta.


Best: Tim Buckley at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton. Early 1970's.   A close second: Beverly-Glenn Copeland at a Greek restaurant in Toronto, approx 1975.

Worst: Shawn Phillips (mid 70's). Some God-awful sitar picking. The Righteous Brothers in Salem Oregon, 1987.

Last: The Hold Steady in 2010 (it was terrific) at The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver. Last small concert: Last night, a house concert in Princeton, B.C. with a fellow name David Stoddard.

I would say I just went to a show last night that was absolutely fantastic. I've seen Flogging Molly several times before but they were beyond they're usual talented goodness. It is awesome when you see a band who's been touring for ages, and doing this as long as they have to be still enjoying themselves....it shows that they are there for the music and for our entertainment. It also makes the music so much better.

Counting only real "concerts," not house concerts, coffeehouses, festival shows, etc.:

First: Josh White (Sr.), Middlebury College chapel, fall of '59. A life-changing experience for me.

Most memorable: Doc Watson with Jack Lawrence at the Clarke at Williams College, Fall of '01. I've seen them several times, and each was superb, but the special part of this was closing the bar at the Williams Inn with Jack (and Kris and a couple of friends) after the show.

Runner-up for most memorable: Willie Nelson at Big Sky, Montana, summer of '03, I think - with rain falling into the beer.

Last: George Jones, Rutland (Vermont) Fair, labor day week of '07. You can see his age and the effects of a long life of hard work and harder drinking, but he's still got it when he starts to sing. (Who was the performer who said that he knew the good years were about over when he did a gig every night all week, and each night he could see a Ferris wheel from the stage?)

First - Strawbs featuring a young pianist called Rick Wakeman, Exeter 1969
Best - toss up between Tom Paxton and Joan Baez (Supported by a young Eliza Carthy), both c 1980?
Worst - probably Ray LaMontagne, c2004? All he did was sing his CD, only not as good. Spoke one word all night - "Peace!"
Last - Carrivick Sisters - brilliant!

The best: Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie (several times years ago)at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier, Place des Arts, Montreal

The first: at the Golem in Montreal-Tom Paxton, I think.

The worst: believe it or not, Bob Dylan at the Bell Centre in Montreal(the acoustics in our seats were horrid) and I'm not into the modern Dylan.

The last: Arlo Guthrie with the family in Montreal

First concert: Theo Bikel on Boston Common, 1963. Dad had recorded (reel-to-reel, air-to-air) Pete Seeger's concert from WGBHtv 2 days earlier, and decided to bring the whole family to this concert.

Most memorable/best concert: J Geils Band, June, 1969, Clark University, Worcester, Mass. In the middle of the concert they wheeled out a black and white tv and shut down the concert so   everyone could watch Dylan's comeback on the Johnny Cash show. The show resumed, but it was an outdoor concert, and the campus cops cut the electricity at curfew time (10PM?). An extension cord brought the band back, and matches and cigarette lighters lit the audience.

Most recent: John McCutcheon in Brattleboro, VT.

The first was the Grateful Dead back in 1995, just a couple of months before Jerry died. That was probably the best one, too...but I'm not sure...been to many many great concerts over the years.

The last was a local band called Lincoln's beard, it was at the art gallery they own in Vancouver, Washington.

I can't tell you the worst, because no matter how mediocre the band or singer is, I get caught up in the energy of it all, their energy, that of the audience....and I love it. I have unfortunately purchased some cds based on this, but they were missing something, and I think it was the collective spirit or soul. It doesn't translate very well sometimes.

Best: (expected) Battlefield Band with Brian McNeil

Worst: (by miles) Bert Jansch - late, stoned??, played half of Anji then left. Money back was no compensation.

Most unexpectedly good:

Champion Jack Dupree, in Chertsey (UK) in about 1969.
He turned up, but the crew didn't, so he just sang and played the pub piano, without any mikes or amps, and we all just crowded round him.

Doesn't get any better than that.

I have to add Arlo Guthrie to the tie for best. I saw him in a relatively small venue in the early 70's. Wonderful performer.

Not the best, but close--Taj Mahal at the Philly Folk Fest. 15 or 20 years ago.

Not the worst, but close--Bob Dylan at Page Auditorium on Duke's campus--probably the early '90s.

First- Original Jeff Beck Group w/Ron Wood on bass and some raspy voiced singer whose name escapes me. On a Sunday afternoon in Ohio in a tiny club with about 200 other people. I was 12 and my older brother was made to take me.

Last-   Nancy Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Steve Earle. Benefit for victims of landmine explosions. The addmission went to a worthy cause which more than offset the underwhelming performances...other than Steve Earle who was funny and funky.

Best-   This is going to sound odd, but I went to see Shawn Phillips years ago and his opening act was Hall and Oates. He was ok...great singer and his keyboard player, Peter Brown was superb. However, Hall and Oates were a complete revelation. I sat there agape at the musicianship, performing craft and vocal chops their pop hits really don't reveal. Darrell Hall did a solo spot on acoustic piano and got 3 standing ovations IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SONG!! John Oates is a superb guitarist with a real downhome, funky, bluesy acoustic style he showed in his solo turn.

Worst- Black Sabbath, 1974...WHAT was I THINKING!!

I still go out to small, local venues and house concerts every so often, but to go to a large amphitheater or stadium--naw. I don't have the money or the tolerance. And where I live in North Carolina, there are so many great musicians and bands that are local, that there is absolutely no need to bother with going to see the big names. (And most of the big names I am still interested in, I did go see when I was younger.)

   In my case, I'm usually playing on weekends, or working at my day job during the week. I make an effort to support local house concerts, but not go to many bigger venues. We actually didn't go see Richard Thompson in Chicago last Thursday because the club he was playing at doesn't have a non-smoking section. That used to not bother me, but I vapor lock more easily these days. My significant other went to see Paul McCartney last night and was saying that was one of the best live shows she's ever seen. So we're still making an effort to get out to live shows. If I weren't going to the Folk Alliance Region Midwest conference this weekend, I'd probably be going to Evanston to see Tim Grimm perform.

Interesting discussion. One thing that I've noticed, a few people have not been to concerts in a year or more. I think it is important to get out and support live music, but I'm wondering if people are only considering "concerts" to be large venue events. There are plenty of folk clubs that may feature local, national or international artists. Or, perhaps people are just staying home???

First Concert - Richard Dyer Bennet or The Journeymen somewhere around 1961.

Last concert - (other than purely local performances with the folks I play and jam with) - Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus 2005.

Best Concert - Huge Rock Extravaganza at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1965 with the Byrds, Sonny & Cher, Loving Spoonful, Charlie Rich, Roy Head, the Vegetables, the Mojo Men and about 10 other groups - each group played three songs including at least 1 major hit.   Best Folk concert was a tie Between Buffy Sainte-Marie at the Bitter End in NYC in 1964 (passionate and intimate) and Simon and Garfield at the San Jose Civic Center in 1969 (big and perfect).

Worst Concert - Not much to choose from -- possibly Jefferson Airplane - Frost Amphitheater Stanford Calif 1967 - things were going fine until Jorma broke a string at which point they basically went into a 45 minute psycholdelic impromptu/improvisational jam - which was probably really cool in a way but not what a lot of us sitting in the hot sun came to hear.

Best - Neil Finn (First Solo Tour in England after the dis-banding of Crowded House, in the middle of the evening he did an acoustic spot with requests from the audience.

Worst - I haven't yet been to a concert/gig that I've not enjoyed.

Best: Eric Bogle, February 1982 at the Barley Mow Folk Club, in the Pensioners League Hall at Red Hill in Brisbane. There were 252 people packed into a hall meant for an absolute maximum 0f 160. If the Fire Brigade had found out, I'd probably still be in gaol. Eric was magnificient.

Worst: Main Festival Concert, National Folk Festival, Melbourne Town Hall, Easter 1979. I can still tell stories ... There were more things went wrong at that concert than at all the others I've been to put together.

Best: David Broza in Carmiel, earlier this year. The best, two solid hours of passionate, fiery playing. A very warm person too.

First: a benefit concert for WBAI in New York in 1965 or so: 5 of the top folk acts of the day, can't remember exactly which ones, but I do remember The Mitchell Trio, Patrick Sky, and Judy Collins (who brought the then little-known Leonard Cohen out on stage to sing Suzanne)

Best: Hard to say - so many candidates - Jefferson Airplane in Boston 1971 or 1972,
Grateful Dead in California around 1973, Bryan Bowers in Buffalo around 1980, Gary P Nunn in Austin, 1986, Klezmer Conservatory Band in Sydney around 1990, Dolly Putin and the Kazakhstan Kowgirls at the National in Canberra earlier this year....

Last: Enda Kenny at a local club a couple of weeks ago

Worst: I'll interpret this as most disappointing, a concert I expected to enjoy and didn't - still a lot of candidates - Bonnie Raitt was the only concert I ever walked out on after paying to get in (I hadn't been following her career & didn't realize she was no longer playing the kind of music I had come to hear), Mary Black (same comment), Gordon Lightfoot at Stanford in 1973 or so (I think he was just out of it that day).

Special Mention: a concert that started out as one of the worst & ended as one of the best - James Keelaghan in Sydney about 10 years ago (stop me if I've already told this story here). The venue was too large for the crowd he drew, just a few people scattered around a big venue, no atmosphere, and an exceedingly annoying buzz in the sound system. Just a miserable experience. Someone shouted a suggestion that Keelaghan go unplugged but he rejected the suggestion, hoping the sound guy would figure out how to solve the problem. He didn't, and a few songs later, when the unplugged suggestion was repeated, Keelaghan said, OK, I'll unplug, but you guys have to come up and sit closer. We did, and he did, and the rest of the evening was outstanding.

Best...Roy Buchanan in Ottawa 1974, a life changing experience. Pierre Bensusan 2005, words can't describe what he can do.

First: The Young Rascals and Wilson Pickett at the Bushnell in Hartford CT - 1967? My real memory is of Felix Pappalardi of the Rascals backing up Wilson Pickett with some tasty off the cuff organ playing, and I'm quite sure he was sight reading the chart

Best: The Band in 1970 at Trinity College in Htfd

Worst: I love Bob Dylan, but I hated his outdoor concert at the Groton Sub Base about twelve years ago. I hear he has good and bad nights

Latest: The Man, the Myth, the Legend: Seamus Kennedy

Best: Impossible to say. Seamus puts on quite a show. Leo Kottke was simply amazing. The Statlers were kind of a disappointment - much too short of a set.

Worst: Thank goodness, haven't been down that road yet.

Worst: disregarding genre, Frank Sinatra Jr.; thank the goddess that one was a freebee. To stay within folk, Rambling Jack Elliot, one night when he appeared sober but sure didn't seem to give a damn.

Last: 2 weeks ago, Joel Maebus in solo gig.

First--Pete Seeger in 1959 or 1960 (my dad took my brother and I when we were 5 and 7 respectively). Still have memories of that.

Best--Richard and Linda Thompson Theatre Royal Drury Lane Nov. 1975 (only concert I've ever been too where I completely lost track of time).

Last--Richard Thompson, 1000 years of Musical history tour at College of DuPage about 1 year ago (don't get out to see a lot of live shows, because we're usually out performing)

Worst--Three part show at the Aragon Ballroom in 1978 or The Fabulous Poodles, The Godz (the only band that ever was heckled where I didn't feel sorry for them), and The Ramones.

The first "real" concert that I remember was Paul Simon at Avery Fisher Hall in 1975.

The best concert? Why don't you ask me which one is my favorite child? There are SO many that I would give a different answer on different days.

I fondly remember seeing Loudon Wainwright III at the Bottom Line around 1976. Harry Chapin gave an amazing performance at my college back around the same time. I also remember a Paul Simon show at the Garden States Art Center around 1983 - just Simon and his guitar. Amazing.   I was lucky enough to be invited to Bob Dylan's taping of his MTV Unplugged special. It may not have been his best performance, but to see Dylan from just several feet away in such an intimate setting was outstanding.

I remember a cozy show from the late Ed McCurdy in a church basement in Manhattan. Watching David Massengill for the first time at Speakeasy. The Weaver's final performance at the Hudson River Revival - not their best showing, but it was a memorable moment.

I also remember going to a small club in Long Island to see a group known as Blondie. Going to CBGB's to see the same group. Watching the Ramones perform at a club in my hometown.   Seeing the Grateful Dead at dozens of shows.

Musically, they may not have been the best shows - but in terms of memories, priceless.

The first folk concert I ever went to was at Hunter College in 1963.
I was 14, living with my parents in Queens, and going to the Bronx HS of Science. Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry, Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and all for the outrageous price of $2! My parents, not wanting their son to bewandering in Manhattan late at night, refused me permission, but I went anyway. I was grounded for weeks afterwards, but it was worth it.

Worst: A Welsh folk-punk band called "Here be Dragons" at Broadstairs FF in 2004. Glad I had a season ticket - I wouldn't have liked paying money to experience that, cos I might have felt committed to stay.

Could we also have "most unexpectedly good" and "most unexpectedly disappointing"...?

Most unexpectedly good: An East European band at Broadstairs 2004 who absolutely rocked the marquee. Their name escapes me, sadly. (Anyone there who remembers?)

Most unexpectedly disappointing: Martin Carthy at Whitby this year

First: Very close between Spencer Davis Group and Cream, both in London in 1966 (I'm not sure now who I saw first). Both were phenomenal.

Best: This is very hard. Probably equal between La Bottine Souriante (2002), Milladoiro (2001), Musikas (2002), Ani DiFranco (2002 and 2003), Johnny Winter Band (1971-2)

Worst: Dionne Warwick (1979) (yes, surprising I know but her attitude was the most prima donna-like I have seen, ever)
