My cousin took over and ran a popular thriving local community traditional social club.

The cultural hub of the council estate for at least half a century.

Until shifty backroom dealings at a political level pushed her out and shut it down..

.. to be demolished and replaced by another corporate supermarket...

Which now threatens the business of a long established convenience shop just across the road,
owned by a local family...

It's not easy for pubs to survive on wet sales alone. Times are nearly always changing. People just don't go to pubs now as much as they did in the past.

I still go to the pub. Sometimes i do wonder how they manage to make much money. My local is a free house, so at least the profit, however small, stays with them

The mobile phone ban was reported in the newspapers in March 2019. Back then, banning payment by card might have seemed a good idea but, in these days of Covid, contactless card payments are becoming the norm so Sam Smith pubs may have to rethink their policy, if they haven't already. The ban could still apply to phone apps used as a card.

My husband and I were tenants in a Sam Smiths pub for over 20 very good enjoyable years
Neither Humphrey or Oliver Smith are orgres they own a business and run it as they see fit

Steaming Willie, Humphreys no Music rule is not about Just Folkies with a finger in the ear droning on it's about locals who consider it to be thier Pub having thier lives disrupted. No more Watching Sport or going into the Bookies next door then into the pub for a game of Domminoes whilst waching the racing. It is the Customers who make a pub what it is and Landlords and breweries should be aware of that! If they don't like it they go elsware. The Pub trade is in decline music venues are because of Humphreys edict are in short supply. Sounds like a goodtime to buy and develope propertise to turn into Licenced Live Music Venues. Unfortunatly for Humphrey the Grey haired Old Folky is just the man or woman with the Grey Pound to give Humphrey and others some competion. I doubt iif Sam Smiths will get a lookin as a Guest Beer.

Oh and the only time I have stood in the bar with my finger in my ear was when the Grease From the upstairs Oven caught fire in the Plough Whitby. As the team of Fire brigade men arrived me and Mick Haywood stood fast and sang the OLD DUN COW!

Agree with some of the above, and have been known to drink in the aforementioned hostelry from time to time. (Friends live just up the road.)

Mind you, when Wetherspoons set up near where I used to live, we loved it. Not just because of the range of beers on offer, but because they did not have music. You could hear yourself talk, not have to lip read your mate, could hear the barmaid tell you how much money to hand over and where the bogs were.

I just wonder if Sam Smiths pubs toyed with the same idea? In essence, that's commendable, but as ever, silly arbitrary rules rather than applying a common sense policy.

Don't forget, the idea of no music is to be an antidote to loud dance music, not a pop at beer drinking sandal wearing bearded carol singers. if requiring a pint of Sam Smiths whilst sticking a finger in one ear and droning on is so important, then Sam Smiths beer has status in the folk world I hadn't reckoned on....

If the business tactics of pub owners requires a boycott, then there will be even less pubs. I have family experience of getting into bed with Punch, and they make Humphrey look a bit amateur...

He took legal action against the Sheffield Brewery Company for their use of the White Rose in their logo. Eddie at first (I believe) was going fight them but then they offered to pay a design company to design a new logo and look they went for that and had a re-launch. Istarted this thread 5 years ago and I still agree with it's title.

There's something I've been wanting to do during Whitby folk week, since the Plough has been out of bounds for us warblers and that's to go in with a crowd and organise a talk around i.e. we 'talk' instead of sing, but instead of it being like a poetry reading do it more conversationally;

Jim, I was told this by a disgruntled ex-tenant of one of Smith's pubs. He told me in some detail how much property Humphrey Smith owns and also about how he had behaved to a lot of his tenants/managers but, unfortunately, I can't remember any more details.

I'm not sure if the licensing act actually has any relevance to this situation. My reading is that a license needs to be obtained if 'professional' musicians (i.e. being paid to play at the venue) are involved. There is no requirement to license a spontaneous outburst of singing/music by customers for their own entertainment. Trouble is no publican is prepared to test this. Read the Act its there in black and white.

I've heard from one of his ex-landlords that he's a complete bastard. He's been known to walk into pubs unannounced and if he doesn't like what he sees to fire the landlord with no notice. I believe several have tried to take him to court. He doesn't give a stuff whether people drink in his pubs or not - he owns millions of pounds worth of property, including a large tract of Thames river frontage near Canary Wharf. I won't go into a Sam Smiths pub on priciple, much as I like the beer.

Of course Humphrey is a B*st*rd of the highest degree and a crazy one at that but the real villain of the peace here is the stupid PRS/PPL licence!   It's just another income earner by the government,like speed cameras,it's a back-door tax on the nation so the government can cream in millions and then waste it on quangos,bureaucracy,asylum seekers and MPs expenses.

What gets me is how many breweries and publicans just bent over and accepted it and did'nt put two fingers up to the government and carry on regardless. We're such a wuss nation. We're always getting shafted and allow ourselves to be walked all over.

The landlord will be breaking the law, be it in good faith or trying to make a quick few pounds, and is going against the wishes of his boss.

Sam Smiths does not wish to be involved with music in any way. The solution is to give custom to the breweries who do and are willing to pay for the relevant licences.

You are kidding yourselves if you think this is the way forward.
