Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Paul Burke Date: 29 Nov 05 - 06:31 AM 'Cos the bread we have's all sliced, narrow rounds!!! Should be above the line. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Bunnahabhain Date: 29 Nov 05 - 07:09 AM Baking you own bread. How about making the bottle opener obsolete, by making the twist off crown cap the standard? Simple access to beer for all! It may be tech, but is non-music. Below the line with it, although if it carries on like this I know a great hornpipe called 'crossing the line' |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Nov 05 - 06:05 PM Ring pull tins of beans and cat food were the next best idea..... just wish they'd make easy open packets for bacon or other cold meats. LTS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Paul Burke Date: 30 Nov 05 - 03:53 AM Talking of which, why do re-sealable pasta packets always tear vertically, so they won't re-seal? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: GUEST,DB Date: 30 Nov 05 - 05:31 AM Home computers, of course! I can do all sorts of things with mine: contribute to threads on Mudcat (the reason why I bought it, of course!), word process via typing, voice recognition or OCR, fiddle around with various sorts of multi-media including music files, edit, store and print digital photographs (including digital photomicrographs - fairly unthinkable just a few years ago), e-mail, spreadsheets, databases etc., etc., etc. Of course there's a price to pay for this - apoplexy and hypertension when the flipping thing won't behave or the the documentation makes no sense whatsoever!!! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Ebbie Date: 30 Nov 05 - 01:49 PM It amazes me that one innovation was not created many decades sooner: wheels on luggage. Does anyone else remember lugging those backbreaking, arm wrenching, finger numbing behemoths? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Nov 05 - 06:40 PM But what about the days when people went on 'round the world' cruises with naught but a change of underwear in a small brown suitcase the size of your average lap top computer? LTS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Ebbie Date: 30 Nov 05 - 07:40 PM Those were men, Liz. *G* There was a time not so long ago when 'regular' people traveled with more things than I have dreamt of. I live and take care of a house museum and we have some of their luggage from about 1890 to 1940. The luggage includes standup chests with hangars and drawers. (There is a name for that type but it escapes me at the moment. Refers to ocean liners) They also traveled with book boxes, secured by inset screws, and huge strapped bags that had inset shelves. These things carried more than just underwear and handerkerchiefs. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Nov 05 - 08:52 PM My kid's history book says sliced bread was invented in the 1920's. I liked it when Mom would get bread at the bakery, and I could watch as they sliced the whole loaf at once in their Rube Goldberg slicer. I wonder if bakery-sliced bread like that came earlier than the 1920's. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Deda Date: 30 Nov 05 - 09:06 PM I think the packing trunks mentioned were called "steamer trunks." And after "sliced bread", the next most common is "best thing since zippers." So when were zipper invented? Toilet paper is actually a fairly recent invention, late 1800s I think. The ancient Romans used a sponge on a stick -- not to get too gross here. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: Mr Red Date: 01 Dec 05 - 08:00 AM Sooz The best thing before sliced bread - was - er - um - bread. because in those days you would not miss a slice off a cut loaf ........................... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Idea Since Sliced Bread From: autolycus Date: 04 Dec 05 - 05:19 AM ZIP invented bt Whitcomb Judson of Chicago, first exhibited 1893. His system didn't gain currency, and was superceded by Gideon Sundbeck's, patented 1913,tho' the idea didn't take off till 1917. Sliced bread invented Otto Rohwedder, Missouri,1912, but idea didn't become successful until he devised a method of sealing the bread in a wrapper,1928. Greatest idea before sliced brea - the knife. Greatest idea since - the rediscovery of Gestalt bt Fritz Perls after WW2. |
