Subject: Maypoles to Mistletoe, Guildford From: Surreysinger Date: 09 Dec 05 - 07:25 PM There will be two performances of the show Maypoles to Mistletoe, a perennially popular seasonal show returning for its 8th consecutive Christmas at the Electric Theatre in Guildford,Surrey on Mon 19th and Tues 20th December. Featuring some of Sussex's finest singers, dancers, musicians and storytellers, the show has been performed annually for over three decades in its "native" Sussex, where it has become something of a tradition in it's own right. It is a colourful and heartwarming journey in music, story, dance and song through the traditional calendar customs of England - from Candlemas to Christmas, via Easter,May Day, Harvest Home and Hallowe'en - culminating in the singing of carols and, of course, mistletoe! For more information see http://www.electricvoices.org.uk. or ring the box office of the theatre on 01483 444789 |

Subject: RE: Maypoles to Mistletoe, Guildford From: Surreysinger Date: 12 Dec 05 - 05:11 PM Martyn Wyndham Read, Iris Bishop (and the rest of No Man's Band), Jim Ward, Jim Farr, Broadwood Morris, Magog Morris and a cast of thousands (sorry if I've left anyone off).... and in the last couple of years, Martyn's grand-daughter has provided us with carol-singing of her own with grandad in attendance (a distinct "Ah" factor moment!!) in the carols at the end. It's always a very feel-good factor evening, and, yes it is at the Hawth in Crawley in the week before - they've had it for over three decades. It has, however, also established itself as a tradition at the Electric Theatre in Guildford over the last eight years - I know quite a few people who are not actually folkies who don't regard Christmas as having started until "Maypoles" has taken place! It has been a sellout in the last few years in Guildford - we originally only had it on one night - increased to two several years ago to cater for the demand!! |

Subject: RE: Maypoles to Mistletoe, Guildford From: Splott Man Date: 13 Dec 05 - 04:27 AM Thanks. Have a great time. In the late 70s I booked it to Cardiff, having moved here from Surrey a few years earlier, and they did a great show. I still see some of the gang from time to time when I go down to Horsham. Iris and Gary were there with Gary's dad, Ian Holder (late of "Etchingham Steam Band")on accordian plus flute, 2 fiddles and a mandolin. Colin Gates of "Arky's Toast" was amongst the singers. |
