Why, firstly, Gary gnu's Famous Seafood Chowder, of course. A pot big enoght to invite twice as many. Lots of lobster and scallops and clams and haddock and shrimp and, and, and........ in short, I got $60 in the pot!!! Plus whatever whoever brings.

Chips and dip of course, as they are all half price this week, as usual. All sorts of associated snacks. Plus, lots of chopped veggies for those chipohobs. But, no peanuts. Not only are they hard on the alimentary canal, they.. well... you know... and, I am a single guy. And, it's football. No women invited.

Any football fans in to astrology?

Well I have been interested in astrology for some time, and it's kinda hard for me to live in Pittsburgh and not be interested in the outcome of today's game, though [blasphemy moment coming]I don't plan to watch it.

But I was surprised to find this article about the two teams that made references to astrology.

If you're interested, check it out:

Who's going to win Superbowl XL?

-snip-

Here's an excerpt from that article which was written by Ayesha Grice:

"Starting with the quarterbacks...Ben Roethlisberger is a Pisces and Matt Hasselback is a Libra. Pisces says "I Believe", and Libra says "I Balance" If Ben can keep his focus...sometimes Pisces is streaky, he can tune into his Jupiter aspect and do all the right things at the right time. Matt is an air sign his strengths are in his passing game, but from the looks of the Super Bowl Chart, the winner will the team that can move the ball on the ground.

The two coaches...Bill Cowher is a Taurus, while Mike Holmgren is a Gemini...

The two running backs...Jerome Bettis is an Aquarius, while Shaun Alexander is a Virgo. This is Jerome's last game, so you know the "bus"is going to be playing his best game. If Shaun can get past his analytical mind (Virgo) he'll have a good game too...

Super Bowl Charts: The chart for the start of the game comes up Leo rising. A fixed fire sign. The Steelers's are coming off a high having to get their the hard way. Looks like at the beginning of the game they'll be pushing hard, playing with heart...a good start. Mars in Taurus will be close to the Moon in Taurus, that favors Pittsburgh because not only is their coach a Taurus, but Pittsburgh is a Taurus city. Certainly there will be more Steelers's fans than Seahawks, it would seem that all of Pittsburgh is in a Super Bowl frenzy. If the Steelers's tune into that psychic energy it could inspire them to win and win big."

-snip-

The author of this article confesses that she is from Pittsburgh. And that's where I'm livin now and plus I'm a fire sign...so...

Well, whatever it takes.

Go! Steelers Go!

Just finished all errands and phone calls and housework. I put the chowder on simmer and put the whores devours out. Try the smoked oysters with a bit of devilled egg on them there fancy crackers, but, wait until I pour you a bit of rum to go with it. BTW, those are Canuck cold water shrimp, not that tasteless crap from Thailand. Try one without any sauce first. You'll see the difference right away.

Raptor... shall I preheat the oven for the ribs, or are they already cooked? What be your libation?

Kendall... are you bringing your own strings or can you manage on my old Seagull? Gibson's Finest with water or ginger? Try the smoked salmon and feta on melba... seriously. Oh yeah... since you are not into the football, you can tend the fireplace.

I have a spare Hran, Bones and Mandy... anyone? Bring your own whistles, though. I don't swap spit with anyone.

Try it yourself. I found this at www.epicurious.com

PORK, BEEF, AND BLACK BEAN CHILI
"Last year my family spent the holidays on the Big Island of Hawaii," writes Jo Lucarz of Phoenix, Arizona. "One afternoon we ate lunch in Kamuela at the Parker Ranch Grill, where we had the best chili ever — and coming from a group of Arizona natives, that's saying a lot."

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground pork
1 pound ground beef
1 pound chuck steak, fat trimmed, cut into 1-inch cubes
6 garlic cloves, minced
2 cups water
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 6-ounce cans tomato paste
2 teaspoons sugar
3 cups diced fresh tomatoes
3 cups diced onions
3 cups diced red bell peppers
3 cups canned black beans, drained, rinsed (from three 15-ounce cans)
1 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 3/4 cups (about) beef broth
Grated cheddar cheese

Heat olive oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add ground pork and ground beef and sauté until brown, about 3 minutes. Add cubed beef and garlic and sauté 5 minutes. Add 2 cups water; bring to boil. Add cumin, chili powder, oregano, salt, and cayenne pepper. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 10 minutes. Add tomato paste and sugar and simmer 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, onions, and peppers and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.
Add black beans and cilantro to chili. Add beef broth 3/4 cup at a time, until thinned to desired consistency. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Refrigerate uncovered until cold, then cover and keep refrigerated.) Bring chili to simmer. Ladle hot chili into bowls; top with grated cheddar cheese and serve.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

The reason it is not called American (Canadian) Rules Football here is because it's too long a name. We call soccer soccer because association football is too long a name.... same as you do.

The padding? Well, it has to do with safety. Without the padding, there would be more injuries.

If that's a football for you, rough ass.

Anyone else want a do-over with new referees? Even no referees woulda been better. That was fuckin pathetic.

Now, I ain't gettin in to a big discussion, but there were some calls that were absolutely uncalled for. Even after video review, the wrong call was made... not enough evidence to overturn the call on the field? Me arse!!

No, I am not sayin it was fixed... but it sure was fucked. When the officiating is that bad, ya really can't say a game was won or lost.

Of course, I ain't given back the coin I collected.

Hey Gnu, how about some examples so as we could agree or disagree wid you?

The offensive pass interference call on the Seahawks was spot on. The only problem is if its only called right once in a season it looks bad. I for one am sick of receivers pushing off on defensive backs and then making a catch, or worse, getting a flag for defensive pass interference.

The call on the mythical touchdown was pathetic. There is no way the ball broke the plane of the goal line. That is the most agravating rule in the book - no other line is treated that way in the game, the end zone should be treated like the sidelines - you aint in until you get a body part in.

On two other plays that went against the Seahawks the Steelers were clearly offsides - one the Seahawks were penalized for holding (which there was) and on the second one the Seahawks QB was sacked. Either or both times the Steelers defensive end crossed the line before the center snapped the ball.

This was the worst season for officiating in the playoffs that I have seen, culminating in the worst Super Bowl ever officiated. I thought the Broncos (twice) and the Patriots (twice) were clearly favored by the refs, but this game was ridiculous. Was it enough to effect the outcome of the game? Who can say, many of the calls were early. But the overall taste in my mouth was pretty rotten - and too bad too. Jerome Bettis was a great story line, and the Seahawks gave it all they had. I just wish I could be sure that the Steelers really deserved to win the game.

Dawg... I said, "Now, I ain't gettin in to a big discussion,..." and I ain't. However, I would like to comment on the mythical touchdown requiring a "body part". The rules clearly state that the ball has to "break the plane". Nothing to do with the body.

I hope that was clear enough, on accounta, I ain't gettin in to a big dicussion. Hehehe... ya gotta read between the lines. Sorry, couldn't resist.

You said, "This was the worst season for officiating in the playoffs that I have seen, culminating in the worst Super Bowl ever officiated." You said it right, Dawg.

Unfortunately, the only do-over is next year. Sucks eh?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

From: freightdawg

I agree that is what the rule says about the ball breaking the plane of the goal line. What I disagree with is that the rule is a good one. You are in-bounds until a body part is on the line or touches the ground beyond the line. You have to have two feet (or a foot and another body part) on the ground to have a legal reception in any part of the field (you cannot just catch the ball within the "plane" of the playing field). If a punt bounces in the field of play, crosses the plane of the goal line and is then batted back into the field of play by a player who has broken the plane of the goal line but has not yet touched the ground in the end zone the ball is still considered to be alive and can be downed in the field of play. The ball cannot just "break the plane" of the uprights, it has to go all the way through the uprights for a field goal or point after touchdown to count.

So what nimrod decided that "breaking the plane of the goal line" was sufficient to score a touchdown? All I am saying is that the rule (amongst many others, by the way) stinks. It is an artificial intrusion into the logic of the game that is clearly designed to favor the offense. It should be immediately banned, along with that insane "tuck" rule that robbed the Raiders of a legitimate win over the Patriots in the AFC Championship game two years ago. (I'm still hacked at that atrocious call, and I am far from being a Raiders fan.)

Here's a suggestion: let's make every official's call subject to the legitimate public scrutiny that every other person associated with the NFL gets. If they screw up and get reprimanded, let's hear about it on ESPN and every newspaper. No more "private" reprimands or discipline. Let's get it out in the open, and fire the skunks who shouldn't carry a whistle.

Yesterday in Seattle Mike Holmgren bitched and moaned about the officiating.

Well, Mike, the refs didn't allow Ben to complete a 37-yard pass on 3d and 28. The refs didn't let Willie Parker run 75 yards from scrimmage. And the refs didn't leave Hines wide open for a TD pass on the gadget, a play the Steelers had also used against Cleveland, which you might have known, Mike, had you bothered to watch the films.

And we won't even begin to talk about your clock management at the end of both halves.

Maybe if hadn't been so concerned about the officiating going into the locker room at the half that you didn't answer the sideline reporter's question but chose instead to bitch about what your guys in the booth had told you about the Steeler TD, maybe if you'd made some adjustments at halftime, Mike, like the Steelers did, you might have been able to win this game.

But you lost your focus, and your team allowed the Steelers two huge plays, and you lost.

I think it was a great, close, hard fought game.

JJ I think its hard to get to the superbowl and not be a bit fired up at half time and when she asked the question the only thing on Holmgrins mind was the time wasted.

Oh... a fair discussion. Cool. I enjoy footy. I understand footy (Aussie Rules Football - ARs). Only took watching about twenty minutes to learn the basic rules and watching about two games to most of the rules. (Even kinda pissed me off when they changed the uniforms.) As for Yankee Football (YF), learning the rules would prbably take two or three times as long. And, I may as well say it now... nobody will ever fully learn the rules of rugby, but that is a discussion unto itself. I love rugby.

ARs certainly does flow. YF certainly does stop and start...unless, you understand the game "beyond" the rules. That takes watching at least ten to tewnty games and studying the organiztional structure of "off-field" team. During play, there are 11 players on the field and 29 players on the sideline. The off-field team consists of coaches, coordinators, trainers... 30 some of them. They are constantly observing and analysing the play and the performance of all players, constantly trying to determine how the opposing team will react to different formations, etc, etc, etc.

This is why YF can be so much fun to watch. If you understand the game on and off the field, it never really stops. YF is as much a game of chess as it is of physical prowess. I find that YF allows the spectator to be much more "into" the game because of this. And, fans can actually disrupt play by cheering loud enough to make audible communication by the offense prior to the snap... ah, sorry... fans can make a difference simply by being noisy when the opponents have possession of the ball.

The start and stop nature of the game also adds one more element of uniqueness to YF. In ARs and the like, the players have to balance between pacing themselves and being left behind. They also get a bit of resting time when not directly involved in the action. In YF, every player is at full speed on every "play", and sixty minutes of play time takes about two and a half hours. Instead of continuous fast-paced action, YF is a series of lightning-fast actions. It's like the marathon versus the 100m... over and over.

I enjoy footy. I enjoy rugby. I enjoy football. I enjoy Yankee football. If I had to choose between them, I would say that I would watch the game of most importance and tape as many others as I and my buddies could.

Go St. Kilda.

Good reply AR goes for approx 120 minutes some of the players are said to run up to 12 miles per game.We have 4 interchange on the bench , our coaches sit in the stand and make there moves and changes from there. We average about 40.000 people a game , big games might get 70.000 .Grand final would bring 95.000 to 100.000.You can only dispose of the ball 2 ways kicking or handballing with a clench fist, you get free kicks for various rules. Our scoring is 6 points for agoal 1 point for a minor, so it could be 15 goals 10=100 to12/8 =80 ,hope this helps
