How big is Canada?

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=fb21432a-1d28-415e-b323-ceb22d477732&k=69493

I mean if you can't protect your borders....

"We have the longest coastline in the world, much of which is under ice for most of the year, and we don't even have an all-weather icebreaker," he said.

"We don't even have a federal government helicopter north of 60 -- not a single one."

He warned that if Canada cannot keep watch on its vast northern territory, we could lose control over the Northwest Passage, a 5,000-kilometre sea route through the Canadian Arctic that climatologists say could be open to commercial vessels within the next 10 years as a result of global warming and the retreating northern ice pack.

"Our enforcement capability is embarrassing," he said. "[And] that sends a message to other countries that we aren't really serious about our sovereignty or about enforcing our laws in our own territory."

North of 60, we use a variety of fixed-wing heavier than air machines to service the DEW and PINE systems, and others, and to transport personnel and supplies to Alert, the northernmost manned post on earth.

We have ice breakers, but why would you want to keep the Northwest Passage open all year?

Tha fact is that this is our very strategy. If anyone lands way up there to attack, they'll freeze before they get to us. Even if they made it close to the tree line, we'd just hide behind the trees and shoot them coming over the barren watseland of the True North, Strong and ****ing Cold.

Sorry guest... I coundn't resist. I am in a giddy mood, what with the Kissmeass season being shoved down our throats by never ending commercialism while the average standard of living dove some fifteen percent due to all the peace and goodwill in the world, seeing Santas going on a beer bottle throwing riot and looting, and on and on. Just gets me all tingly inside... like I wanna puke.

rarelamb - Why would we need an all weather ice breaker or a helicopter north of 60?

Our biggest threat up that a way is Denmark and like us, they can usually talk their way out of most problems. Unlike our Southern neighbors, we don't seem to feed on fear.

$136,479? Perhaps bobad misplaced a decimal and it should be $136.47 9/10? I wish I'd known sooner- I'll get my check sent off promptly - no one can say that I don't do my patriotic duty. (Do we round up that fraction?)

Round up the fraction, Ebbie. Get the debt paid off more quickly that way. Someone has to put in Halliburton's share.

Well, if it came from the National Pest...oops, Post...it's pretty good reading for the outhouse. The multi-purpose newspaper. (At least the Sun has scantily clad drool bait.) Besides, is there a good reason to be as paranoid as the morons who want to fence the border? Oh yeah, to keep that swill that passes for beer in the Excited States out.

Anyway, if you ain't slept in the snow in August in this hemisphere, I suggest you go stand watch. When it warms up you can consider first hand the various merits of black flies and mosquitos compared to frostbite and snow blindness.

Have I used enough cliches yet?

Keep your stick on the ice.

Peace, Mooh.

Never pee out an open window in January in Kapuskasing...

In fact, don't pee outside at all. You will be there until Spring, frozen to the ground with a really pained look on your face.

We need to defend ourselves against them damn Russkies, who -- what? Oh, sorry. Where was I? We need to defend ourselves against those damn North Koreans, who -- what? How many miles? How crazy? OK. We need to defend ourselves against them damn terrorists, who -- what? You mean they use commercial airlines and bombs in suitcases? OK, OK, sorry, who do we need to defend ourselves against? Well, how about a country that refuses to acknowledge our sovereignity over the Northwest Passage, that kidnaps our citizens and sends them away to be tortured, that is intercepting our e-mails and reading them whenever it wants, and is after our water and oil...........

The National Post wouldn't want that, oh, no, what, and offend our dearly beloved neighbors?

yours,

Peter T.

This seems the ideal place to post this: I saw a TV Special about a Super Volcano erupting in Yellowstone and sending a deadly cloud of ash over the entire US.
Mexico closes its borders to refugees (heh heh) and the president complains loudly "Don't they know that it is a death sentence to close the borders?" About time he figured that out.

Kapuskasing is the home of the northern burka. In the summer they wear nylon stockings over their heads because of bugs and in the winter, ski masks. My sister-in-law grew up there and no one ever saw her face in public until she left when she was 18.

"Weekend in Canada a change of scenery
Was the most I bargained for
And then I discovered you and in your eyes
I've found a love that I couldn't ignore"

Hell, why not post it in this thread.
