Just like those people who compete with each other to write in to the "Times" when they have heard the first cuckoo, I hereby lay claim to having seen (shock, horror) The First Chocolate Easter Eggs of 2006: on sale WH Smith's, Braintree, Essex, Monday 2nd January. This has got to be the earliest sighting, ever. (Plumage: red/blue/gold, Cadbury mini).

All those unclaimed Lindt chocolate reindeer on the supermarket shelves(the ones covered in gold foil and wearing a little bell round their necks) will now be speeding back to base, for the "master chocolatiers" to re-cover them as Easter bunnies. What a cunning plan by Lindt to use the same mould for both - although I do think the reindeer look decidedly bunny-like, despite having antlers painted over their ears. No wonder nobody seemed to be buying them (apart from their exorbitant price).

What a world we live in...

I know a shop where the little solid "chocolate" eggs with a hard coating are available year-round (they're spotted too, though in a different sense) but somehow I feel these are a sort of cheat in the context of your quest. Also the stuff they are made of is so inferior I think they should be discounted on quality grounds.

I don't expect to see a real Easter egg for, oooh, days yet, just before the next halloween masks.

Jeannie, seems they skipped right over Valentine's day where you are.
When I did my shopping last Friday, the Christmas Deco's had been cleared completely and were being replaced with Hearts, Chocs (by Lindt but shaped like...yes you guessed it Hearts:>) and Plastic Red Roses.
Living from one retail holiday to the next!!!
What a world indeed.
Love and Light
Jude

It's half a joke.

Chicken and the egg had sex. When they'd done, the chicken lit a cigarette and said, "Well, I guess we've answered THAT question!"

Are you sure they were Easter eggs? Perhaps they were miniature American footballs. After all, the next holiday isn't Easter or even St. Valentine's Day, but Superbowl Sunday. No, wait! If they were really intended for Superbowl Sunday consumption they would have been made of beer, not chocolate, wouldn't they?

love those Ads by Goooooogle

Free delivery chocolates Totonto
and
Kosher Passover Tours

here in Sydney I must report I have NOT (yet) seen any Easter eggs. But then I haven't done much in the way of retail therapy over the post-Christmas sales. However I did save $1.45 on a $2.95 packet of gift tags & $16 on a wool & silk shawl!

I love Ukranian Easter Eggs
Once I videoed an elderly
Ukranian woman who made them..
the tradition is that when these
eggs are made each spring, it
helps keep the world turning,
and the seasons continue to
advance.

I heard someone on the radio this morning say they had seen some, so it's a certainty I'll see 'em soon.

I wonder how long it will take for Velentine's Day stuff to appear?

Open Mike - a few years back my Greek colleague gave us beautiful eggs decorated using herbs as stencils. Fortunately I took several pics, including Maria holding the eggs, cos my egg started smelling many months later, phooey.

I saw Hot Cross Buns in Sainsburys before Christmas.
I do recall, though, in the days when I managed a C & C Warehouse for a while, I ordered the Christmas Chocs in April for delivery late October, and Easter Eggs about the end of September for delivery in January. We were selling them on retail, though, the corner shop owners in the '60's did at least have the decency to not start displaying them until a couple of weeks before Easter.

G'day Sandra in (Inner) Sydney,

Well .. you weren't out in slightly less inner Sydney Leichhardt ... Easter eggs appeared in Coles, Norton Plaza, in the first week of December! (Also seem to have been laid in Woolworths, Leichhardt Marketplace within the following week!)

Regards,

Bob

ya sure they weren't Chrissy eggs, Bob?

what has happened to Valentine's Day? Are the retailers planning to by-pass that retail opportunity, oops I mean day?

Let us not lose sight of the fact that retailers are in it for the bottom line......and if people didn't buy Easter eggs, hot cross buns, mince pies, Christmas cakes etc, either in or out of season, the shops wouldn't stock them!

Cheers
JennieG
