"How many Comhaltas members does it take to change a light bulb?"

Scared voice in the background: "Change? Change? Did somebody mention "Change""?!

Civil servants? Do you know why the federal buildings in Ottawa have yellow lines painted in the hallways and stairwells? So that those who are leaving early don't bump into those that are coming in late.

All these posts but not this old PC joke. In Alberta I first heard it while taking coffee in a Hutterite Colony, largely surrounded by farms owned by descendants of Ukrainian immigrants.

How many Ukrainians does it take to change a lightbulb?
Fifty-one. One to hold the bulb and fifty to turn the house around. The joke was told about Hutterites in the Ukrainian households.

This worked as a Blonde joke or hillbilly joke or mechanic joke or civil servant joke or- pick your category. But I'm sure everyone has heard it by now.

And one to explain what in heaven's name the connection between light bulbs and arses can possibly be,
one to ask who invented light-bulb jokes, when, where, why, and whether?
and one to realise that we might not hAve enough catters to do all the above.
and one to ask if the bulbs fall out because of a faulty thread, or, as it's known in the trade, a thread-drift.

Auto.

500 contributers (who can spell colour) to complain about those stupid screw-base bulbs which leave their screws in the fitment.
1000 contributers (who think it should be spelled color) to defend them because Edison invented them. "And anyway, sometimes bayonet-fittings do, too."
And Peace, who is selling tickets to his show where he fires aerosols at candles, and burns the theatre down.

We all know that the lightbulb was really invented in Canada but the Americans stole it and gave the credit to Edison. Since then, the accumulated debt plus interest from that one stolen bulb is over 6 billion dollars U.S. The U.S. owes us bigtime!

If you add up all the energy and resources consumed in the manufacture of a light bulb, from the high-temperature processes of refining metal ores and making glass on down through all rest, then add the cost of electricity and the ecological damage caused by producing it, how can any morally concious person justify the use of lightbulbs when candles are available as an alternative?

i jut remembered my father had several large glass globes
from light bulbs that he would empty out, open up and
fill with water then suspend in the sun..they would
invert the image of the view that you could see
through them. He also had a box where he
kept bulbs batteries fuses, etc. which
he labelled "light bulbs, to replace
dark bulbs" He really liked to play
with words....nice to remember
him. He also had some of
those old bulbs filled
with confetti for
decoration.

Just had a quick look in some ref.bks. re inventor. (Oh, goodness, someone didn't did they?

Given that there is a slight oversimplification in the realm of invention (many contribut something), a couple including a chronology by the US journalist James Trager award the palm to Sir Joseph Swan. He demonstrated the first 5th Feb 1877, a few monthe before Edison came up with his variant. Edison patented first, which is often the reason for thwe "first" attribution in the world of invention.

er - was it Mr Edison who invented the electric light bulb or was it one of his famous "employee he couuld call on to prove he invented it" or was it Sylvanus P Thompson, or Mr Osram who really invented it.

There speaks an electronic engineer who prefers LEDs

The correct term is "luminaire active element", and in the EC it's covered by the RoHS directive (Directive 2002/95/EC), the WEE Directive (2002/96/EC), the Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC and amendment 93/68/EEC), the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (89/336/EEC, 92/31/EC, 93/68/EEC, 2004/108/EC), the Energy efficiency requirements for ballasts for fluorescent lighting Directive (2000/55/EC), and the General product safety Directive (2001/95/EC), amongst others.

at least one 'Catter to post a variant of a song that was previously posted {adding demographical information} and commenting that the version that she or he sung is the right one, or makes more sense than, or is better than any previously posted version.

For instance...

when I learned "It's Better To Light Just One Little Candle" in junior high school {1950s Atlantic City, New Jersey} we sang

"When the day is dark and dreary
And your way is hard to find
Don't let your heart go weary,
Just keep this thought in mind."

-snip-

I think our version is the right one. As you can see it nbot only makes more sense, it also rhymes in contrast to the version that was posted earlier.

"When the day is dark and dreary
And we know not where to go;
Don't let your heart go weary,
Just keep this thought in mind...

-snip-

Go/mind? Naw. It just doesn't work.

At least one 'Catter to link a song that kinda sorta fits the subject:

Candle? Did somebody say candle?

It is better to light just one little candle
Than to stumble in the dark.
Better far that you light just one little candle,
All you need is a tiny spark.
If we'd all say a prayer that the world would be free,
A wonderful dawn of a new day we'd see...
And if everyone lit just one little candle,
What a bright world this would be.

When the day is dark and dreary
And we know not where to go;
Don't let your heart go weary,
Just keep this thought in mind...

And then the mosquito regains consciousness a few hours later while you are asleep, limps over to your bed, crawls up onto it, then onto you. Since it can't fly anymore, there is no warning high-pitched whine to alert you of its presence. It inserts its siphon into your jugular vein, drains you until you lay there dried out and wrinkled like a raisin as it limps off, sloshing and gurgle (and snickering) over the horizon.

Damned things are hard to kill!

Light a candle. When the mosquito comes near, take a can of Raid and spray the little b###ard. When it falls to the floor, squish it with your foot. Then, using the ball end of a metalwork hammer, swat it a few more times until it blends into the carpet. Then blow the candle out.

A bunch of Mudcatters worked at the same factory. One of them, Giok, was a little soft in the head. One afternoon the foreman walked through, looked up at the rafters and noticed Giok was up there with his knees hooked over a beam, hanging upside-down.

"What in tarnation do you think you're doing up there?" exclaimed the foreman. "Get down from there right now or you're fired!"

"I'm a lightbulb," asserted Giok.

"Lightbulb my *ss," shouted the foreman, "You've got 1 minute to get back down here and get to work."

Giok just kept hanging there, looking down at the man.

The foreman looked at his watch and counted down the seconds to one minute. "That's it." He said. "Get down from there, get your things and get out. You are out of a job as of now."

Giok climbed down from the rafters and headed for his locker. Much to the forman's surprise, all the other Mudcatters stopped what they were doing, and followed Giok out.

"Wait! Stop! Where do the rest of you think you're going. Get back to machines and quit wasting production time."

The 'Catters just kept walking as the foreman fumed and fussed. "I don't understand why the rest of you are walking out. You can see he wasn't doing his job!"

As the Mudcat crew walked out the door, one of them turned to the foreman and said "What did you think would happen? Surely you didn't expect us all to keep working in the dark!"

(ok, ok...I'll leave.....Janie)

And one to ask.

One to say stop blaming Blair for the light bulb situation.
One to say the answer is 42.
"    "   " stop blaming Bush for the light bulb    "
"   " "   "    "    Al-Qaida " "   "    "       "
"    "   " it's all toooooooooo addictive.
"    "   "   "Get a life !!"
"    "   "   "Your missing the point."

AND surely one to say," I'm sure someone wrote a song about light-bulb changing - it's just that I can't remember the words
or the tune
or if I just dreamt it."

and maybe someone to say,"That's lovely. I've been inspired to write that song."

Perhaps ther real question is, how many Mudcatters has it taken to change a light-bulb

ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL
I'm sorry for the outburst.

Well Old Guy you know the controversy over the fact that the Light Bulb manufacturing Company just started building a factory in Texas; and that GWB and family own the najority of shares in it. Right now Ted Kennedy is telling the media that they make sub standard light bulbs and make a huge profit on replacements. They also use more power than regular bilbs, and thats to support the oil companies. All we need now is to dig up the dirt on the predominantly Mormon/Evangelical Christian managment hiring practises and we should get a good thread going here...

How many forum members does it take to change a light bulb?
Ironic if this is not the first time of posting!!

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
1 to move it to the Lighting section
2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 to hijack the thread and ask how to change the horn
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.
