Subject: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: CarolC Date: 09 Feb 06 - 11:09 AM We're moving on Saturday, to beautiful coastal North Carolina. I am very pleased that I will be able to count myself amongst the North Carolina 'catter contingent. North Carolina is a wonderful state with a lot to offer. We will be making a couple of trips over three or four weeks, and at this point I don't know when we will be getting internet at our new location. So after Friday, if I'm not here for a while, I'll see you guys on the other side of the move! |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: JennieG Date: 10 Feb 06 - 09:26 PM A question from an ignorant Aussie: Why is it called the Tarheel State? What's a tarheel? Cheers JennieG |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: Janie Date: 10 Feb 06 - 10:00 PM The origins of 'tarheel' are not exactly known, but North Carolina was noted for its production of pine pitch (tar) and turpentine. During the Civil War the term became associated with the tenacity (spelling?) of the North Carolina Confederate troups. This is a link with a little more detail. If you search around some you get different stories, but they all seem to run along similar lines. OK. Now this is a Folklore thread. Janie |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: tarheel Date: 11 Feb 06 - 09:38 AM the "tarheel" story or legend, as told on the state maps tell a version that during the civil war here, north carolina was a main producer of tar and turpenitine...and it seems that some Nothern Regiment was chasing some Southern Rebels from North Carolina, and it was obviuos that the Rebels were getting away.... one of the Northern soldiers yelled out,"put some tar on their heels to slow threm down!"...and later when the Southern Commander General Lee, heard about this encounter he replied, "=Well,God Bless them Tarheels!" it may have happened...maybe not...but we "tarheels" love to tell it! so hence the nick name..."tarheel" tar |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: CarolC Date: 14 Feb 06 - 02:37 PM We're here! We love it here, and the move has gone smoothly (so far... still another load to move). We closed on our new house yesterday and spent our first night in it last night. We love the house. Haven't been to the beach yet, but that will have to wait until we have more time. I'll get back online when I can, but I don't know when that will be. Thanks for the heads up Guest,10 Feb 06 - 09:13 PM, but we were living in a hurricane zone in Alabama, with tornadoes, and without the benefit of the ocean nearby. Here, we probably won't get the tornadoes, and we're supposed to be up too high for any flooding. The closest coastline is about ten miles from where we live. Thanks everybody. I'll check back when I can. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: CarolC Date: 24 Feb 06 - 01:38 AM We're back in Alabama for a few days, getting the last of our stuff and closing out accounts, etc. The house is great, as is the neighborhood. It's only a few blocks from the center of town, but it's surrounded by rivers, creeks, a cemetary, and some open fields with railroad tracks, so it's almost like living in an intimate little neighborhood out in the country. Our back yard is surrounded by an impenetrable jungle of trees, bushes and prickly vines, so when I look our our kitchen and bedroom windows, all I see is a wall of green. We couldn't ask for better neighbors. Because it's a small and somewhat isolated neighborhood (middle middle income range... good, solid, hard working people like teachers, small business entrepreneurs, law enforcement... people like that), the people in the neighborhood really look out for one another. I really like that. Interestingly, as far as we know, we're the first non-African American family to live, not only in that neighborhood, but also in that part of town. People are still doing double-takes when they see us. I expect that will change eventually, but we have been welcomed very warmly to the neighborhood, and we feel very fortunate to be living there. We've only been back in Alabama for a few hours, and I miss Wilmington (and our house) already. Here's a picture of the house... http://community.webshots.com/photo/541279686/1541498752034261223mEVQvG |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: Bill D Date: 24 Feb 06 - 08:37 AM Nice little place! Good porch for sittin' & rockin'. I like a yard & trees. Hope the neighbors appreciate the accordian! ☺ (You'll probably be offered stuff to eat that's not on your diet, Carol...) |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: CarolC Date: 24 Feb 06 - 09:34 AM I haven't mentioned the accordion yet. Maybe I'll get lucky and the neighborhood will be full of accordion players. No doubt about the food, Bill, but that happens to me pretty much everywhere I go. JtS, on the other hand, loves good Southern home cooking. He says it reminds him of the food he grew up on in Newfoundland. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: Janie Date: 24 Feb 06 - 10:02 AM Looks great Carol! I was about to warn you about the mosquitos--but where you were in Alabama grew some real healthy bugs. I expect you already have mosquito strategies that will tranfer quite nicely! Janie |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to (coastal) North Carolina From: CarolC Date: 24 Feb 06 - 05:08 PM Yes I do, Janie. I intend to shut the windows and doors and turn on the air conditioner. ;-) I also have a portable screen room that might get some use if we want to sit outside when the mosquitoes are bad. |
