Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodrhan!!!!! From: Paul Burke Date: 23 Feb 06 - 03:49 AM Will we get terrorists sending bodhrans to US senators now? Do you think they'll guess what's in the package before they open it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodrhan!!!!! From: JohnInKansas Date: 23 Feb 06 - 04:19 AM The article did note that the affected bodhranist was doing "better than usual for persons with inhalation anthrax." What if his better condition is caused by prior exposure and partial immunity built up from his years of beating on his skins? In case of a terrorist attack could we be left with a world populated only by bodhran players? Perhaps we all need to go find a friendly goat. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodrhan!!!!! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 23 Feb 06 - 10:10 AM Are there any records of people contracting inhalation anthrax from Mylar-skinned drums? I can't find any information on the Net, but it would seem pretty unlikely since it sounds like the anthrax spores are soil-born and Mylars live their entire lives without ever coming into contact with the soil. The soil in the higher altitudes of the Himalayas where drumskin-grade Mylars are trapped is buried under thick permanent ice sheets. That's not to say that one couldn't become infected by using the skins of the inferior grade Hawaiian Mylar (nasty beasts with dreadful toilet habits), but any drum-maker who would use Hawaiian Mylar skins deserves to die anyway. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodhran!!!!! From: JohnInKansas Date: 23 Feb 06 - 03:35 PM Bee-dubya-ell Unconfirmed reports indicate that the mylar is a recently derived result of genetic manipulation of an unknown precursor animal. The original experimenter who created this mutant species apparently had prior employment in the "sex toy" industry and reportedly is in hiding and inaccessible due to threatened prosecution in several jurisdictions associated with his earlier research. It is thus impossible to obtain sufficient of the original research notes to assess the safety or stability of the species. The wild mylars found in the Himalayas reportedly are the offspring of test animals that escaped during the creator's flight from prosecution on earlier charges. Other populations appear to exist, as mylar hides come from numerous areas; but consistency of mutant strains is poorly assessed. The critical factor to be considered is that, as a recently created, manipulated, specie, the mylar is subject to frequent and rapid mutation, and may in fact already have assimilated mutatant genetic components via crossing with undesirable infectious agents affecting humans. The exact form of the infection transmitted to humans is still a subject of debate in scientific circles, but the claim has been made that persons frequently exposed to mylar skins have been observed as incorporating "plastic" performance elements in their use of the skins, possibly as a result of having their genetic structure affected by the well know plasticalis obsenicus moderniroculus organism. Further research pending. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodhran!!!!! From: Kaleea Date: 23 Feb 06 - 05:38 PM Mine was made a few years ago in Texas, by Albert Alfonzo. A couple of weeks after I talked to him about the details of having it made, he called me to let me know that it would be a bit late. Seems he'd just gotten out of the hospital, having contracted a nasty sickness from the goat skins-born, raised & skinned domestically in the USA. It evidently took a bit of digging for the Dr's to figure that one out. Not bird flu, by the way, just something which happens sometimes as a reaction to breathing or ingesting little bits from the skins. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beware Your Bodhran!!!!! From: LilyFestre Date: 23 Feb 06 - 09:58 PM Alert on student email from the Mansfield University system: Information on Anthrax Incident -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Campus Community Members, A member of the Kotchegna Dance Company which performed at Mansfield last Thursday, February 16, has been diagnosed with anthrax. Health officials have determined this to be an isolated case involving only the artist. The artist, from New York City, is stable at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. There is no danger to campus or community members. For more information on the anthrax situation check online at http://www.mansfield.edu/news/story/default.cfm?SID=756 Again, there is no danger to campus or community members. David Werner Interim President Background: The artist travels to Africa each year to collect animal skins that he tans and uses for his drum heads. Health officials believe that he inhaled anthrax spores while working on the skins during the tanning process in his shop in New York City. Health officials say that the tanning process kills the anthrax spores and the drums that the artist used during the performance were not contaminated. Health officials also say that this type of anthrax is not spread by touch. ********************************************************** Michelle |
