i HASDN'T HEARD OF THIS YET,
But Louie, I hope that your
town is able to deal with
this, and it is a tragedy
no matter where it happens!

Last night I saw a special
documentary on Columbine,
and it was especially
painful to see all the
damage done by the two
young troubled boys.

It was also sad that the police
sat outside during most of the
killings and did not go into
the buildings til much later.

LIves could have been saved if
the boys had been stopped or if
some of the victims had gotten
medical help sooner. very sad.
In the case of the recent Oregon
incident, it looks as if the victim
is alive, and the accused shooter
is in custody, so perhaps this
will be resolved soon, although the
wounds will be present in the school,
and community for many years to come.

Amos in the article it said the police tracked him to a restaurant but that isn't exactlytrue there were 3 17 year old boys who took their awn life in their hand and followed the shooter and when the police finallyarrive they point to where the suspect was and even during while they were following him he pointed the habdgunn at them so the speedy capture goes to these either foolish boys or brave young men you make the call hat ended this foolish and senseless act

My best wishes, and positive thoughts to you, and everyone there. It goes without saying that we all wish a speedy and complete recovery to the boy who was shot .

Unfortunately, these things are happening everywhere nowdays. I live in a progressive, reputedly affluent county that makes a great show of it's enlighted school system--we have had several school related shootings, including a fatality, in this last year alone. Just recently, a boy was beaten nearly to death at one of the most prestigious high schools--

A newspaper investigation discovered that the schools have been having terrible problems with violence, but have been concealing it, and outwardly congratulating themselves on the school's high marks on safety.

The first step is for parents and other concerned people to demand honesty from the schools about what has happened--the next step is the hard one--there has to be a dialog between parents, educators, and the community about why it has happened and what they will commit do doing to change things. Best of luck to you all.

I think the problem belongs to the community and is not the sole responsibility of the school.

In my neighborhood a young man was beaten to death by a group on school grounds, after school hours. The group that murdered the young man was from another school. It has been a great sadness in our community.

The kids, the school and the community got together and proposed a greenway. Council approved it and now, three years later, we are beginning to heal together and build a memorial garden and greenway.

Something beautiful from something very sad.

His mother said it would make him happy.

Reach out to each other.

Too much responsibility is put on schools these days and not enough on parents. Too many parents think they can just hand their kids over to child-minders, nurseries and schools and that's it. What they forget is that child-minders, nurseries and schools are not there to bring the children up and give them love and values and morals.

GUEST Dianavan said:- "I think the problem belongs to the community and is not the sole responsibility of the school". In answer to that I say "Don't you think it is time we put some responsibility on the children in our communities"?. Everyone in the community has some responsibility and more especially the parents. All our societies are in fast decline and what do we actually do about it? Nothing constructive. All we can do is look at ways of getting people off charges because they have had a dreadful upbringing, a terrible childhood.
People CHOOSE whether they commit a crime or not. To my mind, the crime should be dealt with and if a person, children included, is guilty then they should be dealt with in an adequate way.

When I was a boy the only thing that kept me in line was fear of punishment. Now, there is no punishment, only rights. It seems like no one accepts responsibility for their actions anymore

Of course we care. Everyone does. I dare say every 'Catter who saw this thread opened it and felt saddened. Few have posted. I assume many are like me... too saddened and sickened by these events. So, we go on without responding. I did.

Thoughts and prayers from one of many.

Every time I hear of school shootings I can't help but think of that powerful song by Tom Paxton "Johnny Got a Gun".
Truly sad.

In part that's right. However, the proliferation of violence on TV has helped create a world where shooting someone is 'acceptable'.

"Preschoolers overwhelmingly prefer and pay close attention to cartoons(33) – a format that is particularly violent. Saturday-morning cartoons, for example, have 20 to 25 violent acts per hour compared with five violent acts per hour in prime time programming.(34) With their preference for cartoons, preschoolers are therefore being exposed to large numbers of violent acts in their viewing day. Based on their viewing patterns, it has been estimated that, by the time they start school, children will have seen an average of 8,000 murders and 100,000 assorted other acts of violence and destruction on television.(35)"

You said it right, Kendall..."Now, there is no punishment, only rights. It seems like no one accepts responsibility for their actions anymore."

All you have to do is walk out your door to find these idiots. People are becoming more ill mannered by the minute. It's as if they have the right to be ignorant. Sad innit?

Sadly this kind of thing is on the increase everywhere, what is it that tips a person over the edge to do it? Very often you hear after an incident like this, especially in the UK that the shooter was a quiet unassuming person more often than not living alone. Tragic that another one is in the news again.

I understand that they caught this one. Perhaps we can learn some of the motivation behind this sort of thing.
