Subject: BS: Med ??? Skin feels burning???
From: Bobert

Okay, this ain't my skin but the P-Vines... She has a place on the back of her arm where she says the skin feels like its burning... It a couple inches above the elbow and the area that feels like burning is about 2 to 3 inches long... There's nuthin' that can be seen... No rash... No injury, etc...

Anyone ever had anything like this and if so, what the heck is it and waht can ya' do fir it???

Yeah, okay, before someone says "Take her to the doctor" let me say that she does have an appointment for later this week but I was kinda hoping that someone here might have some idea how to relieve the symptoms until then...

Thanks ahead of time for any help...

Bobert

I have very painful "burning" sensations on part of my leg, especially when touched, even lightly. The area involved is much larger than you described, though. My pain is caused by a damaged nerve which sends false/distorted pain messages.

Best wishes that this will be a temporary problem for your wife.

A cold compress may give some relief, and it surely won't do any harm. I might hesitate to put an ice pack on it, though.

Bobert,

There are so many possible causes that determining what it is will take a medical doctor's knowledge. As to the symptoms: is there a rash with it? Is the burning sensation 'on' the skin or 'in' the skin. Does it hurt P'vine to touch it? Does it hurt even to touch the fine hairs of the skin over or near the area? Does it affect the elbow joint?

The thread title gave me "fond recollections" of the effects of a couple of medications that doctors have prescribed for me "because they usually help something and everybody's taking them." The actual description doesn't sound much like that though, since with the common medications the "burning skin" is usually everywhere for susceptible people.

A few medications, particularly in the blood pressure and cholesterol regulating groups, can cause similar sounding side effects, and onset often doesn't begin to be noticed immediately; but the effect is cumulative with continued use. Niacinamide (Nicotinic Acid) is one that's fairly commonly prescribed, that builds up slowly, and is well known for the "burning skin" effect in susceptible people.

Sounds to me something like 'shingles' but then doesn't that affect the tummy area, not the arm.

This can't hurt but who knows if it hep. Working with hot tar, hot lead, torches & just getting burnt by working outdoors in the hot summer sun, I've always use an aloe plant, it's unbelievable for the burns I've mentioned. Pulls out the heat, cools the pain & did wonders with lessing scars. Like I said it's not harmful in way when applied directly to the skin. Hope all goes well.

There are lots of possibilities and we would only be guessing but Yes - I have fibromyalgia (Common in er.. mature ladies and fewer men. Painfull. Pain-in-the-everything. But not fatal!) and I have this sensation in various parts of my skin. It does feel exactly as your wife describes it. Good luck Bobert to you and yours. Keep us posted. Cheers, Joy

Yikes!!!

I jusr went to Google and looked up "shingles" and one of the other symptoms is a swollen eyelid which unfortunately my Sweetie had last week...

And she did have another one of these things last month on her stomach and it burned when it was touched and got crusty and went away...

Sounds like shingles, gol danged it to heck... Accorsding to the site I found 1 in 10 adults over 50, who have had chicken pox, will suffer from shingles at some point in time...

Danged!!!

I'd sho nuff take 'um off her if I could... I deal with pain a lot better...

But thanks everyone...

Bobert

My mother suffered from Shingles. Injections of Vitamin B12 helped relieve the symptoms very much. There is no cure but it will eventually go away by itself. Have no fear.

Thanks, Sol, for the advice... I'll pass it along to the P-Vine and tell her ask her doctor about getting this treatment...
