Subject: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: RangerSteve Date: 16 Apr 06 - 12:01 PM Once again, I need help with a computer problem that probably has an obvious answer, but I'm so computer illiterate it's pathetic. I took my computer in to get it cleaned out (viruses, adware, spyware), and when I got it back, everything had shrunk. The icons on my desktop were smaller, the games (solitaire, free cell) had gotten smaller, and I can barely read what I'm typing right now. What do I do? Thanks in advance for your help. Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Apr 06 - 12:17 PM Like BB said, with a couple of notes. You might have to change the resolution, or if you like the way the picture looks but you want your icons bigger, then you can go under the "Appearance" tab and make the fonts or icons bigger and leave the resolution where it is. The higher the resolution the better many things will look. If your print is too small in just your browser you can go into "View" then set the "text size" in your browser (IE, in this case). There's also an icon you can add to the top of your browser so you just click on the AA and reset the size. In IE, find this via "View" then "Toolbars" then "Customise Toolbars" and you'll see the choices of what you can have at the top of the screen. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Apr 06 - 01:08 PM "Shrank", Ranger Steve. Everything shrank. If it shrank yesterday, then you could say that it has shrunk if you like, but that's all the help you're gonna get. ;-) Pedantically yours, LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: mack/misophist Date: 16 Apr 06 - 02:13 PM 800X600 is rather less detail than most video cards will handle. If you do anything with graphics, leave the resolution as is and reset the other things individually. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: artbrooks Date: 16 Apr 06 - 02:49 PM If everything has changed size, than I think BeardedBruce is on the right track...you do have to be on the desktop rather than in some other application (like, for example, this chat box) for it to work. When you get to settings, look for the slider in the bottom left corner of the box, click and hold it, and put it where you like it. Personally, I like 1024x768...that gives me a text size about the same as a 12-point font at the distance I sit from the screen. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: beardedbruce Date: 16 Apr 06 - 04:04 PM It is unlikely that someone "cleaning up" a computer would change the settings in the programs- But highly likely that they would adjust to the monitor being used. Since most repair places have large monitors, they would see the larger icons as too large, and reset the screen to a higher resolution. That would affect both the icon size, print size , and games. Thus my advice, to restore the system to the original settings. As the best setting is dependent on the monitor size ( and capabilities) I would not go sa far as to specify any specific values. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 16 Apr 06 - 06:31 PM Ignore it until in the morning. The entire Universe is scheduled to shrink by roughly 25% at midnight tonight. It's likely your computer simply got out of phase with the rest of the Universe and shrank ahead of everything else. When the Big Shrink occurs everything else, including yourself, your house, the moon, and the Andromeda galaxy will shrink by the same percentage that your computer's display has already shrunk. And please make note of the fact that I used the correct forms of the verb "shrink" in present, past, and past participial tenses. The post my be bullshit, but the grammar's exemplary. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Apr 06 - 08:18 PM Just try the different choices, and stick with the one that suits you. (The smaller your monitor screen is, the lower the numbers on the one you prefer are likely to be.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 16 Apr 06 - 11:56 PM Try this: Start Control Panel Display Appearance tab Third box down - font size select normal, large or extra large. This changes the font size on tool bars and icons, but it doesn't help with the small type on Mudcat posts. Too bad. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Apr 06 - 01:23 AM 1280 x 1084 is standard for most new monitors, whether 17 or 19 inch, if they're LCD types. CRT monitors can have much higher resolutions--I bought a ViewSonic with a good pixel size (.23 is smaller than most) and the resolution can go huge (so the images are quite small unless I enlarge icons and such). It has it's uses, but since I use it along with my LCD monitor (both are hooked up, but usually only the LDC is on) I keep them at the same setting. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! everything shrunk From: Manitas_at_home Date: 17 Apr 06 - 01:25 AM LH, Ranger Steve was correct in saying "everything had shrunk". "Everything had shrank" would be so wrong, ans "and when I got it back, everything shrank" would imply it happened before his eyes. |
