Just a final reminder that the BBC Radio 3 programme originally broadcast on the 23rd April (St Georges Day) will only be available on the Beebs listen again facilty until Sunday....Would advise everyone to listen while its still there!!

A two hour Homage to all things English, Artists involved include, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Kathryn Tickell, English Acoustic Collective (and their individual members) Bacup Coconut Dancers, Nancy Kerr and James Fagin, And many others!

Produced by Verity Sharp (of Late Junction fame) and Chris Wood.

I would urge that anyone who has an interest in English music to give it a listen.

That's what I said. If a tune has it's own name, use it. Don't use the name of the song to identify the tune.
Which of the 45 or so tunes for While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night are we singing? would be the best example I can think of.
That's why tunes DO have their own names.

But Keith said 'was to the tune of Bonny Bunch Of Roses'. SO he was right as the Rose Tree is the tune to the Bonny Bunch of Roses. Same as The (London)Derry Air is the to Danny Boy. No reason why a tune can't have it's own name.

That would make the "tune" Rose tree and the "song" Bonny Bunch of Roses. Sorry to be picky but I have this problem all the time with people using the wrong titles for songs/tunes. Guess it comes with being a Virgo.
I am listening to the show now and the tune is definitely Rose Tree.

The song is definitely Dido Bendigo, a Yorkshire Foxhunting song.
It sounds to me like Gavin Davenport of the wonderful English group Crucible who is singing the lead. I also think I could hear Jess Arrowsmith singing in the chorus. The group is from the Sheffield area. I will email them and get them to verify if it was them.

Well, if you get through all of that, and manage to listen to it ...

I tried to approach it as if I were a general Radio 3 listener, not someone interested in folk music, and overall I thought it worked well. The unusual version of "Jerusalem" struck me as eye catching (ear catching?) and I think it was a good idea to leave the Sam Larner/Walter Pardon stuff to quite late in the show to allow people to acclimatise a little. A lot of the earlier work was musically complex, which I think would appeal more to the general listener.

There was only one song, near the end, that I thought some might find too long and boring, and while I liked the idea of merging the traditional 'Lofty Tall Ship' with a modern interpretation, I don't it worked that well in practice.
