Subject: Looking for a folk song book...
From: GUEST,saulgoldie
Date: 25 Apr 06 - 03:39 PM

I have seen a book of folk songs that I wanted to get, but I can't remember the name of it. The book is length and width about the size of a Newsweek magazine, or maybe a leetle larger. It is blue. The title has "Folksongs" or "Folksingers" and possibly "America" or "Handbook." It is 400+ pages. I first saw it in the early 80s. It may very well be out of print. Anyone have any ideas? I sherwood appreciate it!

Pop around to your local public library and tell them. I'll betcha they can come up with something on World Cat.

About the size of a magazine, blue, about 400 pages? One that pops to mind is "The Folksinger's Wordbook." Could this be it? I got a copy of it years ago. It contains the words—words only, no music, unfortunately—of 1,000 songs. I did a quick google and hit Amazon right off.

CLICKY.

Apparently it's been reprinted and reissued. This is the same book I have, but the cover (mine is light blue) is different.

By the way, the comb binding on the new edition is a good idea. You can open it up and it lies flat rather than trying to flop shut. The one I have is (im)perfect bound, it doesn't like to stay open, and the pages are starting to come unglued. I'm going to have to run all 400-some-odd pages through my 3-hole punch and put it into a three-ring binder before I start losing pages.

I've grown very fond of comb or spiral bindings for music books. They lay flat and don't fight you. Frederick Noad's guitar technique books are excellent, but you have to nail them to a table or tie them to a music stand with a couple of strong cords to keep the damned things from flopping shut while you're trying to practice.

Agreed, Don, my copy has been in pieces for years. I guess I'd better start punching, too.

Folksingers Wordbook is a very nice item.

Adding a bit to Don Firth- My copy of "Folksinger's Wordbook" (compiled by Fred and Irwin Silber) also is starting to come apart. The plastic comb binding ('Deluxe edition') has lost a couple of teeth and the cover is suffering from broken punch holes. Date on mine is 1973, Oak Publications, maroon cover, but there were a number of printings. There was a reprint in 2000 by Music Sales, $34.95 new at Amazon, cover mostly yellow. Used copies also available through Amazon and Abebooks, some under $10.00. The binding of this newer edition also is plastic comb.

Another largish (Newsweek size) paperback is the "Fireside Book of Folk Songs," edited by M. B. Boni, 1947, Simon & Schuster. This one has both piano and guitar arrangements (later editions only) but only 147 songs. My copy is from the 16th printing (cover mostly yellow) so it is popular.

I used to get all my guitar pupils to buy a copy at one time, when I had guitar pupils.

Its a great book. I did find however that I ended up lending out all my records to flesh out the lessons. This was in the days before putting stuff on computers.

A damn good book, make good luck attend your efforts.

I seem to recall an earlier printing of Carl Sandburg's Americam Songbag being blue and around that size.

Folk Singers Wordbook - yes, that's the one that popped into my head when I read that query. Mine has broken into sections and loose pages. Maybe some time I'll get to work with a punch hole machine.

Sandberg's was much earlier and included tunes.

Folksinger's Wordbook; Words to Over 1,000 Songs (ISBN: 0825601401) Silber, Irwin, and Silber, Fred

Is available through http://www.abebooks.com

for US 8.00 to 14.00

However, the Carl Sandburg classic (do NOT confuse with Larry Sandberg) New American Songbag 1950's (the book I checked, and checked and checked again from the univeristy library that taught me the western classics) ((minimum wage was 1.25/hour and a photo-copy that smelled like ammonia and felt like school tissue-paper was 25 cents) is also available on ABEBOOKS for US 70 to 150.) Watch out - there may be one volumn less - since he and me have an affinity.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Oh I may end up ordering the new edition. I had (well still have) the old one but it has totally fallen apart. This book was always a great resource. Didn't have anything in the way of song background but what a lot of chords and lyrics). I'm glad this topic came up.

I think Irwin put together that book while he was still editor of SING OUT! and speaking of SING OUT!, how about RISE UP SINGING, which was also put together by a SING OUT! associate and also contains words and chords to more songs than you'll ever need. (It also has a blue cover and comes in two sizes)

"Rise Up Singing," lauded by Jim. My 1992 edition, has "words, chords & sources for 1200 songs." Margins of the cover are blue so this one could be the one mentioned in the first post, but dimensions are smaller. Strong spiral binding (also paperback and library binding editions).
Edited by Peter Blood and Annie Patterson (Dealers often list the editor as Pete Seeger, but he wrote only the introduction). A Sing Out Publication.

Like FSWB, it is essential. Some lyrics are abbreviated.

The 2004 printing is on sale at Amazon for $18.87 spiral bound and $14.92 paperback. The 1988-1992 editions used are available through Abebooks at $10.00 up, but look for those with the spiral binding.

Yes, it was Folksinger's Wordbook, and I have it now. I do also have Rise Up Singing, which is also a great book. I will NOT, however bring either of them to any song circles. ;) I will learn the songs so I can do them from memory. Thanks again for the help.

Do bring them to song circles..
not for yourself but for others
so they can sing along if they
do not know the words..or so they
can look up songs they might want
to request!

i have found books to be a good resource..

and i often also bring copies of magazines..
Sing Out!, Dirty Linen, and No Depression.

we often have listeners at our song circles
(friends and family members of musicians)
and folks who like to find out more about
music, musicians, etc.

glad you found the book you wanted.

Laurel
