Greetings:

Mark your calenadrs now, but do it in pencil!

The Seventh Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash is tentatively set for Sunday, July 8, 2007, starting at 7:00 PM at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery in New York City. That's directly across the street from where CB's 313 Gallery used to be. This date, time, and venue are still subject to confirmation. When that happens I will start a new thread, Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VII.

Thank you to all who were at the Sixth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash last night, including FolkinReeGraves. It was great to meet you. I'm only sorry we didn't have more time to chat, but I was really very busy producing the show as well as being in it. I have your e-mail, and I'll be in touch.

Hope the Public Broadcasting Service's NYC tv station have been pre-publicizing this Woody Guthrie commemoration event for the public in NYC (in the same way it pre-publicizes the various U.S. corporate music industry-related documentaries/promotional films it's been airing a lot in recent years). Also, hope WBAI announced this Woody Guthrie commemoration event a lot on its "community events announcements" programs. Anyway, here's another excerpt from Woody Guthrie's July 15, 1946 letter to Moe Asch that probably won't be mentioned much in the PBS documentary about Woody Guthrie that will be aired next week:

"This is the bad part of a capitalist system, this dog eat dog, this spying, tracing, tracking and trailing after one another always under the covers of night and the shades and shadow of day...This is the system which the owners would like to prolong, to keep alive, to prolong as long as they possibly can, because in the wild blindness of it all, they get all of us to fighting against one another, and rob us coming in the fields of production, and going, in the realm of distribution. This is the system I would like to see die out. It killed several members of my family, it gassed several and shell shocked several more in the last world war, and in this world war just past, it scattered lots more. It drove families of my relatives and friends by the hundreds of thousands to wander more homeless than dogs and to live less welcome than hogs, sheep, or cattle. This is the system I started out to expose by every conceivable way that I could think of with songs and with ballads, and even with poems, stories, newspaper articles, even by humor, by fun, by nonsense, ridicule and by any other way that I could lay hold on."

Make Woody Guthrie's Birthday a National Holiday in 2007!

We already have the Woody Guthrie Power Sub-Station on the Columbia River. The Postal Service issues a Woody Guthrie Stamp. The Texas Highway Department names the section of State Route 60 across the Panhandle the Woody Guthrie Highway. The city of Okemah, Oklahoma, has its official Woody Guthrie Days and its annual Woody Guthrie Festival, while the city of Pampa, Texas, has its own annual Woody Guthrie Tribute. The borough of Brooklyn, New York, does likewise. Corporate hucksters use Woody's songs in their TV commercials. I guess the next step along this road to sanitized oblivion will be the launching of the Nuclear Attack Submarine Woody Guthrie. Trust me, that day will soon arrive. President Hillary Clinton will officiate at the christening.

Here's another excerpt about "the politics of the corporate folk music industry" from Woody Guthrie's July 15, 1946 letter (which probably won't be mentioned in the documentary on Woody Guthrie that PBS is airing next week)that might help encourage more of his fans in New York City to attend this year's "Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI":

"To the big owners, an artist of any note of fame, that can be said to work or fight over on the union side, is classed by the big boys as a soldier, a technical, or an artistic captain or a general. The money paid to clip off working class artists may start at a measley ten or fifteen thousand, and run up very quick to the sum of, A Hundred, Two Hundred Thousand, or a Half Million long greens. (This is no money at all to the big handlers that toss bales of money back and forth across their tables to the tune of a Million, a Billion, or more, Dollars)...

"It is not only a question of buying you and your art out of circulation, to keep you from stirring up your people against their blind owners; it is, lots of times a question of blocking your hand on every side, or causing you to get all lost and tangled up in a thousand traps of their psychological, emotional, economical, legal and illegal sorts of personal warfare. This will take the form of bribery, social disgrace, exposes, running down your work, discouraging your talents, and insulting you on every turn...

"It is not just a question of you, as an artist, selling out, and becoming harmless to the owning side. No, you are never actually bought nor bribed till they have decided that they can use you in one way or another to rob, to deceive, to blind, confuse, to misrepresent, or just to harass, worry, bedevil, and becloud the path of the militant worker on his long hard fight from slavery to freedom. Your art helps to preserve, to prolong, to keep alive, and to glorify the essences and the principles of the owning, ruling side. If your art did not add new life to their side, kid not yourself, they would certainly never shake your hand and drop their bloody money down into your lap. And it is the highest form of your owner's joy when he buys you out from the union side (where you) have spent several years of your life getting people to follow, to hear, or to stand for a while and listen to what you have to say, or to live their lives in spirit and in action in the way that you lived your own. This makes you worth lots more to your owner."

FRG:

We look forward to meeting you this coming Sunday. CB's 313 Gallery and CBGB.Omfug are two really wonderful clubs, and it is really a pit they will be closing this fall. Nevertheless, the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will continue. We have been speaking with two other venues, one very close and the other about a 5-minute walk farther west, and both seem interested.

Yes, Bob Sherman still hosts Woody's Children on WFUV radio on Sunday nights from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Unfortunately, that conflicts with the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash, but that should be the worst problem any of us ever faces. This coming week, while we are singing our little old hearts out on stage, Bob will be rebroadcasting an interview he did with Marjorie Guthrie in 1969. Marjorie, as you may already know, was the second of Woody's three wives and the mother of four of Woody's eight biological children, including the only three who now survive: Arlo, Joady, and Nora.

I'll be there at the birthday bash...looking forward to it, in fact. My band used to play at the gallery a few years ago and it's going to be sad to see the place go. I am thankful that they placed us (a very young, little known folk duo) with some more established musicans and gave us a chance.

ps--is Bob Sherman still doing the Sunday night "Woody's Children" show on WFUV?

As we approach this year's "Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI" in Downtown Manhattan, following is another interesting excerpt from Woody's July 15, 1946 letter of 60 years ago (to Moe Ash, I think):

"I have never sung nor made songs just to entertain the upper classes, but to curse their clawing, reckless racketeers, and to warn the nervous ones that live and die by greed...

"I have decided, long ago, that my songs and ballads would not get the hugs and kisses of the capitalistic `experts', simply because I believe that the real folk history of this country finds its center and its hub in the fight of the union members against the hired gun thugs of the big owners. It is for this reason I have never really, sincerely, expected nor dimly prayed, nor hoped for a single solitary minute for a penny's worth of help from the hand of our landlord and ruler...

"I think that I have proved that a folk singer, to sing best what the people have thought and are thinking, is forced to turn his back on the bids of Broadway and Hollywood to buy him and his talents out. I feel like my work in this field will someday be seen as the most radical, the most militant, and the most topical of them all..."

We just added a surprise guest artist to the upcoming 2006 Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash. He is Hillel Arnold, a really fine singer and guitar player. Hillel will also say a few words on behalf of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives for whom he works. Please take a peek at his website: http://www.hillelarnold.com/

We hope to meet many Mudcatters at the show this coming Sunday, July 9, at 7:00 PM. The details can be found in the initial message in this thread.

I agree with Anne. Eventually, an unsanitized varient of the Guthrie folk music legacy is going to probably again break through the blockade of the U.S. Military-Industrial-Media-Music-Industry-Complex [MIMMIC]corporate censorship machine, as long as folk musicians who are into Woody Guthrie keep having events like the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI (or maybe some more outdoor street events right outside the NYC tv studios which demand less censorship of younger anti-war folk music voices). Woody Guthrie's July 15, 1946 letter of 60 years ago also included the following passage that might have some relevance to the 21st-century U.S. "folk music commodification industry" moral crisis situation in this current "era of permanent war":

"Not all of us folk and ballad makers and singers stand where I stand. Not all of them see the world as I see it. Some would rather be a `character' and to be fotographed and filmed, broadcast and recorded, and paid big money by the big money side. They would rather occupy a certain social position, to be well known, to play the game of publicity gangsters and to enjoy the crowds that clap and yell when you tell them directly or indirectly that this old world is okie dokie, she is all right, she is a nice good place to live on, and if you kick or argue, or make too much noise with your mouth, then you are just a native barnkicker, and a griper, and you are kicked out by your own inability to `cooperate' with the high moguls."

Woody's words seem more true than ever. Look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks for daring to come out publicly against the war and Bush. And their music isn't even political. They can't keep us silent forever, though, and the word gets out.

What Steve writes about the exclusion from the U.S. radio airwaves and the U.S. tv screen during this "era of permanent war" of the voices of the folksingers of anti-war protest songs that he mentions,is the key moral issue that, I think, the U.S. media-music industry needs to now confront. Why should U.S. folk music fans who are into Woody Guthrie not eventually begin to challenge PBS or NPR's policy of not giving more airtime to the U.S. folksingers that Steve mentions and not televising events like the "Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI" for a New York City area audience?

If you've seen the new documentary about Alan Lomax, you'll notice that one of the proposals he made in the movie is that "cultural equity" for folk music fans and producers should now be provided by the U.S. mass media.

The kind of censorship that many younger U.S. folksingers are now experiencing in the 21st-century seems similar to the censorship situation that Woody Guthrie described 60 years ago in a July 15, 1946 letter:

"If your work gets to be labelled as communist or even as communistic or even as radically leaning in the general direction of bolshevism, then, of course, you are black balled, black listed, chalked up as a revolutionary bomb thrower, and you invite the whole weight of the capitalist machine to be thrown against you."

Greetings:

Woody's letter which Bob cites is even more true today. How much airplay does David Rovics get? Or Sue Jeffers? Or Evan Greer? Or Ethan Miller and Kate Boverman? Or Joe Jencks? Or Jon Fromer? Or Jay Mankita? Or Anne Feeney? Or for that matter, Joel Landy, who posted a message to this thread earlier today? They are among the best of the current progressive, political folk singers working today, but you rarely if ever hear them on the radio and you never hear them on TV, with the exception of public access cable. Even NPR and college stations shy away from playing their songs, as they shy away from playing the songs of Bev Grant, Charlie King, and others from the generation just before them. And believe me, it's not because of the quality. These are musicians who know their chops. Does the word blacklist come to mind? Maybe it's not as blatant as in the Red Channels era, but it seems to be just as effective.

OK, the rant is over. For now.

As we approach the 40th anniversary of Woody Guthrie's death next year, presumably it could be possible to more aggressively pressure the U.S. Military-Industrial-Media-Music Industry Complex [MIMMIC] to immediately start televising more authentic tributes to Woody Guthrie's actual musical legacy, such as the "Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI".

This July 2006 also marks the 60th anniversary letter of Woody Guthrie's July 15, 1946 letter in which he wrote the following:

"When you ask yourself which of the so-called folk singers live up to the real name, you can cross lots of their names entirely off of your list...Ask yourself, does the singer, (artist or poet), take part in the fight to win a better world for the worker? There is only one big fight with a million and one legs to it, the fight of the worker to win his fair share from his owner (boss, etc.). The more the owners allow a singer to be heard around, the less he can sing the tale of the worker's fight. Before your voice can be heard or your face fotographed, you must actually turn into a weapon of the owner against the worker. I know from a hundred cases of my own experience that any work of protest, fight, militance or plan for the worker, was blue pencilled, and censored a dozen times. Any word that was too true, too strong, or too loud in criticizing the world owned by the big boss was scratched out by several hands under a thousand reasons."

A historical moment in addition to a wonderful evening of music. We have had many great memories while we have been doing this show over the years. Maybe we should close with "This May Be The Last Time."

Anne,

You are absolutely correct. I did mean to say that I wouldn't be too discouraged. Thanks for pointing that out.

Woody Guthrie, as you know from reading the Joe Klein and Ed Cray biographies, as well as from reading his own writing, listening to his songs, and speaking with people who knew him, was a very complex individual. In his tragicly short life, he managed to embrace and blend Eastern mysticism, American spiritualism, primitive Christianity, hokey Will Rogers style homespun philosophy, can-do New Deal pragmatism, Stalin era Communism, and early beatnik thought, seemingly without contradiction. Yet certain themes emerge very clearly. Above all, Woody was an optimist, not in the Pollyanna sense, but in his firm belief that people are fundamentally good, and that they can and will to come to their senses and work hard make this world a better place. He didn't write Don't Worry, Be Happy. That's not the superficial kind of optimist Woody was. But he did write There's a Better World Coming, a song which clearly and powerfully expresses the deeper and more fundamental optimism that was his.

Oh my gosh, once I get started on Woody, I can ramble on for hours. I should quit while I'm not yet putting you to sleep.

Everyone else, please take note. Anne Price and I will be presenting Woody Rediscovered, an exploration of Woody Guthrie's less known songs this coming September 30 for the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, and then again on December 17 for the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. This is an educational program, but don't fear! It's not all lecture. It's mostly songs, which we will be teaching as well as performing. We last presented Woody Rediscovered for People's Music Network in Amherst, MA, this past January, and it was very well attended and well received. So Anne and I hope to see you in the DC area on September 30 or in NYC on December 17. You can check those organizations' respective websites for details as the dates approach.

Meanwhile, please come to the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash next Sunday, July 9, at 7:00 PM. The details are in the first message of this thread. For just $5, how wrong can you go?

Bob,

The Manhattan Neighborhood Network's cable TV show Songs of Freedom recorded the first Wooody Guthrie Birthday Bash in 2001 and they have kept on airing it ever since, most recently this past Thursday. Right now there are no plans to tape this year's show. We sent press releases to certain radio stations in New York, including WBAI. Bob Fass may have promoted the WGBB on his program, but I do not know for certain. I do, however, know that Ron Olesko on WFDU out of Teaneck, NJ, has been publicizing it.

You are right that we have to resist a sanitized, corporate-friendly version of Woody Guthrie, but I would be too discouraged. Woody's family is on the case, and they are doing their damnedest to set the record straight.

Will WBAI-FM or WNET-TV be airing the "Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash VI"? I've noticed that PBS has been airing music documentaries in recent years that seem to pay tribute to a "sanitized" image of Woody Guthrie and imply that Woody Guthrie's musical legacy is being now reflected in the same U.S. corporate music industry that blacklisted Guthrie in the late 1940s and early 1950s. So there would seem to be a political need for PBS to allow some equal time for U.S. musicians who aren't part of the U.S. military-industrial-media-music industry complex to present an alternative view of what Woody Guthrie's musical legacy actually is.

I went to CBGB/Omfug with friends a few times in the 1980s, although I don't recall the bands we heard. All I remember is the place was dark, the music was loud, and everyone was having a good time. I didn't know CB's 313 Gallery existed until 1999. I got my first gig there in 2001 and I have had one or two each year since. I can't honestly say that I "hang out" there, although I have gone several times to hear other people perform.

No, I never performed at CBGB/Omfug.

Greetings:

A surprising number of people have performed at both CBGB/Omfug and CB's 313 Gallery. Among them are Eric Levine and Gina Tlamsa, both of whom will be in the 2006 Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash on July 9.

Both clubs are owned by Hilly Kristal, who has managed to keep the prices low and the booking policy liberal, while at the same time seeing to it that the lion's share of the gate goes to the performers. Even the drinks are reasonably priced for a New York City nightclub.

If you have never been to these two venues, you only have four months to do so. Both clubs must vacate the premises when their lease expires at the end of October, and it looks unlikely that Mr. Kristal will find an appropriate space in New York City before then.

How would you compare your experiences at CBs Gallery to those at
CBGBs? I went on a date with my soon to be husband at CBGBs. When our son was a teenager CBGBs was still going strong and he took his out of town cousins there. Later my son, now a drummer, played there. So now mom's into the acoustic sound at CB's Gallery. What are your memories/experiences? Have you played at either place?

David Kleiman is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who was formerly with Water Sign. He currently is a member of the North River Band here in New York City, as well as the CEO of Heritage Muse. That's the company which publishes the digital edition of Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads.

We are honored and delighted that David will be joining us this year.

For those who have never been to CB's 313 Gallery, think of it as the acoustic twin sibling of CBGB/Omfug, the world famous Palace of Punk. The ambiance is much more subdued. There are tables with seating for about 100 close to the stage, a bar towards the back of the house, and some more tables and lots of standing room near the bar. Feel free to come early, say around 6:30, if you want to get one of the closest seats or if you want to say hello before the show. After the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash is over, we have to make a quick exit so the next act can start on time. You are welcome to stay all night and hear them and all the other performers who follow.

I hear the musicians will be sizzling with dual banjos and many more arrangements. Some of Guthries most familiar tunes and quite a few surprises.

So Mr. Guest, you seem one disinterested party. Mudcatters, are you out there? Have any of you attended a Guthrie Birthday Bash? Always a full house and always a real fun event. Any Mudcaters thinking of coming this July 9th?

I sense your frustration, Mr. Guest.

That's ok. The Woody show genereally has lots of people in the audience smiling and singing away. I anticipate that this year will continue that fine tradition. Will you be there?

Ironic, how disinterested Mudcatters are in this event, year after year.

Speaks volumes as to what the Mudcat is really about. It ain't American folk, that's for sure.

Greetings:

Here is one more reason to be at CB's 313 Gallery on July 9. In addition to the performers listed above, the 2006 Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will also include Hillel Arnold who will say a few words on behalf of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives. Hillel may also join in on one or more of the songs, if the spirit so moves him.

It is hard to believe this will be the 6th Woody Birthday Bash! Many fond memories. I'm sure there will be many more on July 9, as this will be the last one at the CB's Gallery.

What songs should we include, oh wise and wonderful listserv?

I still haven't memorized, "Mean Talkin' Blues". I hope to perform that one at a future WGGB. If CB's does close, one possibility for next year is the Bowery Poetry Club across the street. Any other ideas for venues, folks?

This will be my first Woody show as a married man. Steve, how long before I start singing " It Takes A Worried Man"?

Time to refresh this thread.

Just to answer Chris, there is still a slim chance that CBGB's and CB's 313 Gallery will find a place here in New York City. And even if the owner moves the clubs to Las Vegas, which right now looks like a done deal, there is always the chance of reopening in New York at some future time.

I'm delighted to see that folks are celebrating Woody's birthday! When I lived 'up-country' (in England) I used to always host a "Woody's Birthday" event and contribute any funds raised to the Huntingtons Association charity. My Folk Club (Bodmin, Cornwall, UK) has carried on this small tradition - it's something that I'd like to see the folk song community worldwide get involved in...

This is always such a "sing-along" friendly concert.
Any Mudcatters planning to attend?

I'm quite impressed that anything in New York would be only $5! The fact that you get all that great music is amazing.

It's really a crying shame that CBGB is closing this fall. That also includes CB's 313 Gallery next door. The owner Hilly Kristal tried very hard to keep the club open, but the nonprofit homeless shelter that owns the building had to raise the rent to pay for the programs it runs. Kristal couldn't afford the new rent which would be several times the old rent, and he couldn't find comparable space anywhere in Manhattan he could afford south of Washington Heights. The only options were to move way uptown, meaning north of Harlem, move to one of the outer boroughs like the Bronx or Queens, move to the suburbs, or leave New York City area completely. He chose to leave and accept an offer to open his club in one of the Las Vegas casinos. With the Bottom Line gone and with Satalla gone, this will be a monumental blow to New York's live music scene.

What a great way to remember Woody and his music each July, to sing wonderful songs and meet like minded people in the historic, tuneful atmosphere of CBGB's! I am pleased to contribute to this annual performance, and look forward to seeing everyone there on July 9th.

CBs a nice funky venue. Last time the pictures on the walls were a little racy for me. I wonder what they'll have on display this time. Too bad they're closing in October. Come out and see it one last time. I wonder where we'll have it next year.
