Subject: BS: What are saints' medals made of? From: Marion Date: 01 May 06 - 09:04 PM Hello gang. Those medals that you sometimes see on Catholic necks or cars - of St. Christopher or another saint - what metal would they typically be made of? Thanks, Marion |

From: bobad Date: 01 May 06 - 10:21 PM I just happen to have one hanging around, it's St. Joseph (I think) holding the baby Jesus in his arms and it has St. Joseph's Oratory, which is located in Montreal, on the obverse. I took a magnet to it and it is magnetic so it is most likely some kind of steel. |

From: The Walrus Date: 01 May 06 - 10:56 PM Off the top of my head, the saints' medals and pilgim badges were, traditionally, made in chased silver for those that could afford it and cast pewter for the rest. Modern ones are probably die stamped "German Silver" (cupro-nickel) or a Cu-Ni alloy over a steel core (depending on cost). Just a guess. W |

Subject: RE: BS: What are saints' medals made of? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 02 May 06 - 12:02 AM www.joyjewelers.com offers saints medals in 14K gold or sterling. Of course they are made in pot metal or pewter and the like for the peasants. How about a crown of thorns pendant in gold? (from $80 to $220 depending on size). |

Subject: RE: BS: What are saints' medals made of? From: Joe Offer Date: 02 May 06 - 02:48 AM Well, they're available in sterling silver, and in gold or gold plate, sometimes copper or bronze or pewter - but most of the ones I've seen are what they call "base metal" - i.e., whatever's cheap, usually with some iron. You also see aluminum ones, but die-cast aluminum doesn't show details well, so it's rarely used any more because aluminum is no longer cheap. The medals I've had, have been "base metal" or aluminum (but I never kept the aluminum ones, 'cause they were tacky). -Joe- |
