Thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right direction on the Work Songs of the United States.

Now, I just need to find "work songs" fron North Carolina. The searches have opened up a whole new world for me.

Thanks again,
Susan

"Sawmill Man" by Glenn Bolick of Lenoir NC. It's on that JEMF record I mentioned in the other thread (JEMF 110). The full citation on the album cover is as follows:

Sawmill Man (Bolick)
Glenn Bolick -- Bailey's Camp NR 11953-1
Lenoir, NC (1980)
Existential. BMI 3:44

Loyal Jones' biography of Bascom Lamar Lunsford ("Minstrel of the Appalachians" University Press of Kentucky; 2002) has a huge amount of info on Bascon's recordings for the Library of Congress et al.

The Southern Folklife Collection at the Wilson Library, UNC Chapel Hill, has more resources than you could ever use. I think the curator's name is Michael Jones, and if I'm wrong I apologise to him. He is a very helpful man.

Re Glenn Bolick: he still lives down around Chimney Rock, N.C. I believe he has a pottery down there. First heard him do this song at the 1982 world's fair in Knoxville.

The Manhaden Fisheries had a living/working singing tradition up until the 60's. I believe the Northern Neck Chantey Singers & the Manhanden Shanteymen both still have CD's available of the singing as they did when they fished off the Carolina coasts & I believe both groups of fishermen are still performing.
There's also songs from the prison work farms but I believe you said that was not one of your interests.
Barry
