so - I'll be attending a nephew's graduation over Memorial Day weekend - and driving home afterwards - Any 'catters I might plan on passing or pausing at Between Atlanta and Upstate NY?

Mapquest has me taking 85 to 77 to 81 - then I'm on 81 until Harrisburg PA.

I know I'll be going through Charlotte on that route.

We're two or three hours to the right of Charlotte (I think), but keep in mind that we live about ten minutes from the shore. If you need a coastal fix, we can provide you with the means to get it.

If it makes any sense to take 85 to 95 you will come right through Hillsborough. That has you going right up the Eastern seaboard, though, and the congestion may not be worth it. You could also take 85 to Hillsborough, visit us, then take a scenic mostly 4-lane route north (NC 86 to US 58 to US 220) to Roanoke and 81.

If you took just a bit of detour from 85 to Winston-Salem (and then 74 north to pick up 77 again), I would love to meet you in Winston, and bet I could talk Dani into making the drive also.
