Whaty is the best way of looking at the threads that have dissapeared off the bottom of the page? Is there a way to scroll down or to go to the next page?

Jim,
Members have the option to 'trace' a thread, where it appears on a list to be recalled at will.

In your situation, if you know how recent the thread was you can change the period in the 'filter' at the top of the page to '3 days' or '7days' or whatever, and call up a longer list.

Alternately, you can choose some memorable word from the thread title, and put this in the 'filter' box, and set the period for 1 year.

Alternately, depending upon your browser, you can use your 'browser history' to look at what pages you visited within Mudcat over the last few days.

Hope this helps

CHEERS
Nigel

Lift up the monitor carefully, and look underneath...

you can use the "messages by date" feature - it is in the pulldown quicklinks menu at the top right.

Most of the features described require you to have a membership cookie - membership is free, with no strings attached.

Our FAQ has all sorts of information on how to find old stuff at Mudcat. Our main search engine can be a bit confusing because there are technical problems that won't allow it to search messages posted since the Summer of 2005. The best (and simplest) way to find recent information is to use our Filter. Put a pertinent word from the thread title in the filter box, and set the age back as far as you want.

Or if you are a member and you have posted to a thread your personal page lets you list the threads you've contributed to and click onto them

Easiest thing when a thread has slipped off is just to adjust the date filter, as Joe said - the one that is level with Create a New Thread towards the top of the forum page.

When the Mudcat has been down for a bit, doing that is a good way of starting the conversations rolling again. In which case rather than entering any word into the panel, leave it blank, and just set the date thingy at three days or whatever, instead of the default which is one day.

If the thread has recently dropped out of view, the simplest is just to set the next longer period in the "Refresh" box at the top of the Threads page. The default is "Age: 1 day."

A problem with just refreshing for a longer period is that the thread you're sure you looked at two or three days ago was probably actually a month or more back, and the list of all the threads gets very long when you go back very far.

If you remember a word from the thread title, putting it in the Filter box will significantly shorten the list of threads that will come back. This makes it more convenient to go back further, but get only threads with the filter word(s) in the title.

If you don't find the thread by putting the word you remember in the filter and going back a little further, it's quite often because the word you remember isn't really the word that was used, or it was spelled differently. If you can find another post you've made using the identical name as one you used in the thread, clicking on your name at any post you've made, where it says:

Subject: Thread Title
From: Guest,Jim - PM
Date:

should return the most recent 200 posts by 1"Guest,Jim." You can also use the name of anyone else who posted in the thread you're looking for, if you can find a more recent post by that person. This is handy when you think of a better answer to someone, but can't remember what thread the question was in, although usually if the thread has "gone off the bottom" nobody will care if it's just clever, but it might be worthwhile if it's something useful that just required some research.

1 You've been quite consistent with using "Guest,Jim" with 540 posts returned. Note that the chronological order in the listing of posts is not necessarily in order, and this listing doesn't have a "printer friendly" button you can use to sort them; but recent posts should be listed correctly. Some of your posts back in "00" are in mixed order.

John
