Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Paul Burke Date: 15 Jun 06 - 09:38 AM No experience of it, but if it's any help, my brother had an operation removing part of his bowel due to colon cancer in 2001. He's made a very full recovery and is enjoying life very much thank you 5 years later. All the best, and tell us if there's anything practical we can do. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Morticia Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:02 AM only very practical stuff like Dis living allowance, etc. used to be a social worker on a cancer ward and in a hospice, not that you'll need one of those for a while or at all, i'm sure. let me know if you need any advice or practical help. i should be typing properly in about a week. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Emma B Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:06 AM My sister -in - law made a very successful recovery from the same op and returned to full time employment several years ago - her only complaint was that she managed to put on weight in the process! Very best wishes for a full recovery. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: greg stephens Date: 15 Jun 06 - 12:02 PM Pied Piper Well they took a bloody big chunk off me a couple of years back for very similar reasons and here I am telling the tale. I cant tell you not to worry because you will. I can say dont drink whisky or anything similar, not at all good in that situation. But the odd pint of wallop in the Peveril shouldn't do any harm (I have my spies). And bagpipe music is pretty much bound to stimulate the immune system, I would have thought. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Metchosin Date: 15 Jun 06 - 09:20 PM All the best Pied Piper, from what's been noted on this thread the prognosis sounds good. I'm walking with you too, because I got diagnosed with a rather nasty leukemia awhile back. I'll hold your hand anytime if you want and we can both take this journey one foot at a time, one day at a time. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: CarolC Date: 16 Jun 06 - 12:40 PM Best of luck and comfort to you, PP, and also to you, Metchosin, in your fight with the big C. Here's hoping for the best possible outcome for the both of you. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Metchosin Date: 16 Jun 06 - 01:42 PM Thanks CarolC, its sometimes harder for those closest to you than for yourself. Hubby took it really badly and ended up being treated for heart failure. For me, it sometimes helps to talk about it with those with which I have a bit of distance, without fear of sending their blood pressure through the roof. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Jun 06 - 11:21 PM The shock of the diagnosis is sometimes the hardest thing to deal with. It was for me, at any rate. Two surgeries after my diagnosis and things are fine, but I certainly made a few rapid changes. I set aside the work on the second master's degree and spent (still spend) more time with my kids. Best wishes! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: jeffp Date: 17 Jun 06 - 12:15 AM I wish you the best of luck. The best advice I can give is to watch your nutrition and try to maintain a good healthy diet. Nutritional supplements such as Boost or Ensure (in the US, whatever the equivalent is in the UK, where I assume you are) can be helpful when you can't eat full meals. Hard candies can help if the chemo makes everything taste wrong. Jeff |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Jun 06 - 08:40 AM All the best to you PP and Metchosin. Both Kendall and I have had brushes with cancer - mine is gone but Kendall still has regular checkups and lost his voice. However we are both still very much alive. I do agree with previous comments about the efficacy of the Mudcat. Please do keep us up to date on progress and remember that many here have had similar experiences so if you want to shout or 'winge' or just have a hand to hold you have a lot of friends here. |

Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: SINSULL Date: 24 Jun 06 - 11:47 AM IMPORTANT! Feel free to whinge, whine, complain, bitch, throw things, whatever. Better to get those emotions out than to have them sabotage you within. Candle will be lit for you and another I just heard is facing radiation treatment. Isn't middle age a bitch? Subject: RE: BS: PP v the big C From: Dave the Gnome Date: 10 Dec 06 - 11:44 AM Saw PP at our festival, tail end of October. He looked very well indeed and was getting back into the swing of things. Still tired and obviously suffering from the effects of surgery but slimer and fitter than he has been in a long time:-) I have not been in touch since but was very heartened to see him and hoping that all the good wishes are having the right effect.
