Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 19 Jun 06 - 07:56 PM Jim, Mike Ryan is a piper who plays (or played?) with Cara, a trio from somewhere around east Yorks, north Lincs. According to Micca, it seems he's the best, and pipers like like Nick Scott (Last Night's Fun) and Paul Brennan (various bands, played on Gangs of New York soundtrack, played at the BBC Proms with the Royal Phil, etc) are simply not significant.*G* |

Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: Georgiansilver Date: 20 Jun 06 - 07:15 PM Jim Carrol...click on the blue clicky that the Villan has added to the thread and click on MUSIC...have a listen to "The Faerie Queen" in which Mike Ryan(Uillean pipes) and Dave Oakley (fiddle) play in such sync that you cannot tell pipes from violin....My favourite track of their music. I have all three of their CDs and play them often. Great stuff. Best wishes, Mike. |

Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: Bunnahabhain Date: 21 Jun 06 - 04:43 PM Some beautiful playing there, but I have to disagree. With headphones, it's easy to hear that the violin is off to the left, and the pipes off to the right. They are perfectly in sync though.... |

Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: Dave Hanson Date: 22 Jun 06 - 02:34 AM Are ' Cara ' taking over from where ' Punch The Horse ' left off ? Overdoing things has an adverse effect. eric |

Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: Georgiansilver Date: 22 Jun 06 - 06:14 AM Don't really think anyone is taking over from anyone in the Folk world...I thought there was room for all! Perhaps they are great in their own right and we should not try to make comparisons. Why do you feel you should make a comparison? Best wishes, MIke. |

Subject: RE: How many Uilleann pipers are in England From: GUEST,Guest Date: 22 Jun 06 - 05:52 PM Herds of the little squeekers gather together every month in Manchester for a geek fest the topics including how to ..Select cane for reeds ..Humidity and reeds ..Reed tool techniques ..Make your own Reeds in a hundred easy lessons. Enough geek mockery . I think there are hundreds of Uillean players but they dont get out much as they are all too busy making reeds! Mike McGoldrick plays the Uillean pipes and sounds great. |
