Subject: BS: Australia! From: *Laura* Date: 20 Jun 06 - 09:45 AM hiii - haven't been around for a while but I'm searching for info and good old Mudcat came to mind. Last time it was Mexico (a plan still in motion) but this time it's Australia. I'm considering adding to my gap year with an offer of bar work in Melbourne. My only reservation (apart from the flight price!) is that while it's sunny summer here it'll be winter in Oz when I want to go (June/July/August) and I've heard Victoria can get particularly cold? I've got real mixed sources on this though so I'd appreciate any info - esp climate info - from you well travelled or Australian 'catters! cheers m'dears xLx |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Jun 06 - 10:00 AM Melbourne is one of the coldest cities in Australia, on the other hand it was voted the friendliest city to live in in OZ. Nice place, Yarra river, trams, Seacat to Tasmania, Casino. Nice countryside around, recommend visiting the Dandenongs, William Ricketts Sculpture park, and Healsville Animal Sanctuary. Go out to Philip Island and see the Little Penguins parade at sunset, lots to do, nice town. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Peace Date: 20 Jun 06 - 11:28 AM http://www.melbourne.com.au/climate.htm If you are not used to metric temperature, simply multiply the temp in C by 1.8 and then add 32. That will result in the F temp. For example 7 degrees C 7 X 1.8 = 12.6 12.6 + 32 = 44.6 (or 45 degrees F. That's about as cold as it gets. Spring jacket weather. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: SINSULL Date: 20 Jun 06 - 11:34 AM Go! It is an amazing and wonderful place. Good people. Watch out when feeding kangaroos - they can get nasty. SINS, who is the only person I know who was ever attacked by a kangaroo. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Amos Date: 20 Jun 06 - 01:04 PM Hmmmmm...one can only speculate on what it was about SINS that prompted such jealousy on the part of the kangaroo, bearing in mind that they are both mammalian females... A |

Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 20 Jun 06 - 03:10 PM Cold is relative to where you come from Laura. I live in Melb. and love it. I've been to New York, Boston and Frisco in winter and they are all colder than Melb. We don't have snow in the cities or burbs here, only in the mountains. Still, coming out out a warm bar at midnight will require a bit more apparel than a mini-skirt, fishnet stockings and a boob-tube. Right now on weekends I get around in shorts and tee-shirt but most need to wear a bit more than that. I take the view that zero degrees celsius ( 32F ) is freezing. Any number above that is degrees warmer than freezing. Right now ( 5AM ) we have about 6 deg.C so that's 6 deg. of heat. I feel warmer already. JG |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: *Laura* Date: 20 Jun 06 - 06:10 PM thanks everyone! well I'm from the south-west of England so it's not ever really hot here but it's not New-York-Cold either. It just rains a lot mainly. I really REALLY want to go now I just think it makes more sense to go to Australia when it's cold here and hot there! But it would still be amazing whenever I go... so I just don't quite know what to do! xLx |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Jun 06 - 06:12 PM Well go in November before the fares go up for the Christmas rush, you will hit springtime then, nice time to go. G. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Peace Date: 20 Jun 06 - 06:15 PM Take a raincoat and a sweater. Just GO. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: alison Date: 20 Jun 06 - 09:38 PM Hi Laura I'm not in Melbourne, I'm in Sydney. So Melbourne is a bit colder but not by much. Having come from Ireland I would have been used to more or less the same summer temps as you (and the rain). The first winter I was here I wandered around in shorts and T shirts and laughed at the Aussies in their jumpers and scarfs. A few years later I have acclimatised and I do the jumpers bit too. What I am saying is it is not like UK winters, the days get up to high teens early twenties. It is cool in the morning and evenings. But only cool enough for jean and a jumper really. It gets light at about 7am and dark at 5.30pm (even in summer it gets dark at 8pm) Summer over here can be very hot high 30's into the 40C. Best times to come are Spring & Autumn to get a nice pleasant heat. you'd enjoy it slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: *Laura* Date: 22 Jun 06 - 11:12 AM Ahh thanks alison - it's all very well saying it's hot or cold - but it's all comparative! That's what I was hoping to hear... haha. I think I'm going to go even if it is winter cos I'm not sure when I'll have the chance again! thanks guys xLx |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 23 Jun 06 - 04:41 AM OK, they say it's cold in Melbourne, but it almost NEVER snows there! Does that help? Robin (Brisbane) |

Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: freda underhill Date: 25 Jun 06 - 08:33 PM If you're looking for warm weather this time of year, Laura, just go further north - Queensland, the Northern Territory are beautifully warm all year round! best wishes freda |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Big Mick Date: 25 Jun 06 - 08:47 PM HERE is a webcam that refreshes every 60 seconds which shows the city. A google search for Melbourne, Australia webcams gave a number of sites that can show you the city. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Hrothgar Date: 26 Jun 06 - 07:15 AM Freda is right about Queensland - beautiful one day, perfect the next! |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Herga Kitty Date: 26 Jun 06 - 05:24 PM Laura Did your dad ever tour Australia, and / or offer advice on where or when? Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: MBSLynne Date: 27 Jun 06 - 05:29 AM Go to Perth instead....it never snows there. They get frosts up in the hills around Perth sometimes, but not even frost in the Perth area itself. When I was 16, the only month I didn't swim was May...and that's swimming in the sea, not heated pools! Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: *Laura* Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:54 PM Hi Guys - thanks for the help! Yeh Kitty he did tour Australia I believe.... never spoke to him about it tho :-(. The thing is, this company that I'm going with (and organising the rest of my trip with) offer bar work in Melbourne. I don't fancy an office job in Sydney... although I think there's fruit-picking in Queensland but I'd just love to do the bar work I really enjoy it! Maybe I should do it for a bit then travel up north a bit...? I will check out those weather things though thankyou! xLx |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: MBSLynne Date: 27 Jun 06 - 05:17 PM DON'T MISS PERTH!!! Everyone ignores it because it's so far away, but it's a lovely part of the country and if you are going to Oz you should really go there. Go by train...the Nullabor is amazing and has the longest straight stretch of railway in the world Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 27 Jun 06 - 07:26 PM I knew a guy who went on the train, and the Texan who was also on that trip had become very quiet and shamefaced by the end of the trip... Most Americans I have told that story to, have applauded too... :-) Yep, go by the train - it's only about 3 days of nothing out the windows, and if you are lucky, you may find an audience appreciative of good music performance... probably not much chance of tips though... :-0 Wait on, I should be ranting on about coming to Queensland, shouldn't I?... |
Subject: RE: BS: Australia! From: Joybell Date: 27 Jun 06 - 08:28 PM It's true that further North it's warm and sunny just now but it's also true that it's CROWDED. Melbourne is more peaceful in the Winter. Days are often sunny and warm after morning frosts. Lots of good day-trips. You could think about taking a day trip out here to Warrnambool to see the whales. Cheers, Joy |
