Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: beeliner Date: 26 Nov 09 - 10:24 PM The booklet notes to the Too Much Fun album (1999) state that two albums were recorded, with the second, titled Unholier Than Thou, to be released in 2000. Was this ever released? Will it be? Is Stampfel still an editor at Daw Books? |

There are about a dozen Jeffrey clips on YouTube now, but one video, for "Saturday Night" is too long for YouTube and can be found on MySpace and Facebook. Any problems, email me: dehypnotist@yahoo.com Yes, Stampfel is still at DAW (he married Betsy Wolheim, who inherited the company from her dad). He continues to play up a storm in all kinds of musical conglomerations. |
Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: GUEST,Aussie guest Date: 27 Oct 10 - 01:42 AM Just discovered this thread ... like most late comers I lurve HMR .. I've still got (and was just digitizing) their double album I bought in the late 60s-early 70s?? ...it was one of the few vinyls I brought with me when I moved to Oz in '80 ... anyway in response to way earlier post asking about He's Got Better Things for You - it's an old gospel song sung by Bessie Johnson on Vol 1 of a Herwin album called Bessie Johnson 1928-29 ... other gospel singers have covered it ... she's bloody hard to understand ... I'll have another listen and post the lyrics if I can figure them out ... |

Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: GUEST,Woodsie Date: 27 Oct 10 - 04:12 AM "strange offshoot of traditional folk music that included Wild Man Fischer, Country Joe and the Fish, Captain Beefheart among others" This doesn't make any sense. I have stuff by all of these people and they certainly don't fit into any "weird offshpot of traditional folk" genre. The good captain was fairly weird, WMF was also pretty weird. Country Joe & The Fish were a left wing psychedelic acid rock band. Joe himself did do a lot of folk stuff - but not weird, or belonging to the same camp as WMF or that of Don Van Vliet. The Holy Modal Rounders remebered mainly for their contribution to Easy Rider soundtrack. |

Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: Will Fly Date: 27 Oct 10 - 01:56 PM If you want a sense of the anarchic wonder of the Holy Modal Rounders, check out their "Year of Jubilo" - they compress a whole fake-negro-dialect song into two razor sharp verses - plus some wild and wonderful instrumental playing. Wonderful! |
Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: Lonesome EJ Date: 27 Oct 10 - 01:58 PM Hey Woodsie, cut me some slack. In 1999 when I started this thread, I hadn't heard the Rounders in probably thirty years, since my friend Steve played them for me. The other artists I mentioned were also people Steve had in his collection and turned me on to. I do see some correlations between Euphoria and tunes by Fischer, Beefheart, the Fugs etc. But I'm not here to classify anyone nor hang a label on them. |
Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: Will Fly Date: 27 Oct 10 - 02:01 PM I wouldn't wonder about it, LEJ - the Rounders were unique, unclassifiable. I just sit back and enjoy them! |
Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: GUEST,Woodsie Date: 27 Oct 10 - 03:39 PM Sorry Lonsome EJ - didn't mean to be prickley - one thing they all do have in common is they were in my record collection at various times over the last 40 or so years - and I've always been called weird! Can't seem to get hold of the album "An Evening With Wild Man Fischer" anywhere these days. |
Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: Lonesome EJ Date: 27 Oct 10 - 06:23 PM S'okay, Woods. Sounds like you and old Steve had the same taste. |

Subject: RE: Holy Modal Rounders Roundup From: keberoxu Date: 18 May 18 - 07:52 PM Harpgirl et alia, The inevitable but sad news has broken at Mudcat of the passing of "Antonia" -- see thread, the songwriter Antonia Stampfel. Her lyrics are included in the songs covered by the H. M. Rounders. In light of which, Joe Offer has kindly indexed some H. M. Rounder threads, the index can be seen at the top of the Antonia Stampfel thread. I offer this suggestion. Joe is reluctant to include, in this index, songs that have been covered by many other acts/bands besides the H. M. Rounders. Maybe posts to this thread would be an appropriate place to: link to existing threads about songs/lyrics that have been covered by multiple bands, including the H. M. Rounders. or to: reference songs in that category, that perhaps don't have their own threads? Any other ideas? |
