No, I've got the words and the tune. Also, the voice in my head singing it is Giok (hey, Giok -- do you sing it? Did you sing it at the Press Room or at Sinsull's?)

Anywho, I KNOW I've heard it a couple times lately (meaning the past couple months) on CD in my car -- maybe the same recording; maybe several recordings.

I've been through the pile o' CDs that I know I've been listening to over the past few months. But probably not all of them.

It's just something that's driving me as crazy as an ear worm -- maybe one of you will mention the recording(s) I've got and that will not only narrow it down, it will answer the question that's got me lying awake nights! (Yeah, I know -- I need a life.)

Mudcat's bailed me out before. Thank you for whatever information comes my way.

Linn

Steeleye may well be correct.

I remember an Irish version from the late 60s/early 70s. May have been the Johnstons?

1959---first recording I ever heard of this song. It was done wonderfully, on his first album, by the one and only---SANDY PATON !!!

This was his Elektra LP called The Many Sides Of Sandy Paton--the front cover of which can be viewed at my photo website: http://rudegnu.com/art_thieme.html

It was a much better album than Sandy would ever admit!! ;-)

Hmm...I HAVE been listening to Ray Fisher lately, but I didn't think it was on the CD I've been listening to.

Will have to check it out further.

Thanks, Jon, for the search at Amazon -- that hadn't occurred to me. (But it also didn't turn up anything I've been listening to lately.) And what I've been listening to lately (too) has been Art Thieme -- but you didn't record it, did you, Art?

Trying to reconstruct what I've been listening to for the past several months is an interesting project...

Big Tim

I think you're right that the Irish hit was Sweeney's rather than the Johnsons. My memory of it sounds like Johnny Moynihan.

If my memory serves me correctly the (recorded) Steeleye version dates back to the 90s when Gay Woods rejoined the group rather than her original stint with the band in the early days.

Still haven't figured out which CD(s) it was on that I was listening to.

Not the Ray Fisher, not the Maddy Prior.

I'm not seeing it by that title at least on a 2 CD compilation I was listening to a couple weeks ago. There's a couple things I have to find time to check out.

This is worse than an ear worm!

Thanks for all the suggestions -- but none of them have hit it yet.

Yes, definitely the first version I remember from around 1967 (?) was by the original Sweeney's Men. It was issued as a 45 rpm Pye single b/w their version of the Derby Ram. I had a copy of it on an old Pye album of Irish Folk Hits, which included both tracks, as well as some by the Johnstons and other Irish bands and singers. I still sing it occasionally, mine being based on the Sweeney's Men version.

Yes Declan, it was Sweeney's Men, dated 1967. I think it was quite a hit in Ireland, tho not sure as I was then living in England.
(Actually, I don't like the song, finding it rather too music hall, and too cruel for my taste).

A double CD, 'The Legend of Sweeney's Men: anthology' has recently been issued on the Castle label. 41 tracks in total, including such delights as 'Willie o' Winsbury', 'Dark-Eyed Sailor', and, 'Hiram Hubbard', and some early Woods tracks. Plus detailed sleeve notes.

Yes, it is a bit music hall, Big Tim. I remeber an auntie singing it round the piano about 60 years ago. She sang either 'parrot' or 'carrot' depending upon how many wee nips she had partaken of!

Jim, that's interesting because a song-collector friend just asked me if I'd ever heard "carrot" in place of "parrot" in this song. He heard it this way from a singer recently. I never had although I've known this song for over 40 years. Makes more sense really. Cheers, Joy

I'll have to add that newer Sweeneys compilation next time I'm ordering.

I had the earlier CD reissue of the two old LPs (my vinyl copies being somewhat knackered) but after having to return the third copy to my shop becuase of a fault on the CD I gave up on it. The newer CD looks most interesting.

Definitely not Sweeney's Men that I've been listening to -- or any of the others listed. And it's definitely not on the only Ray Fisher CD that I own (everything else is on LP) and actually HAVE been listening to lately.

Speaking of alternate titles, could I have been listening to a CD with an alternate title listed on the outside so that my ear is telling me I heard it, but when I check the label, I'm not finding it?

What are alternate titles for the song?

I used to sing this song in a duo with another woman, and when we came to the carrot/parrot verse, we always pretended to 'accidentally' sing carrot and correct it to parrot, as a joke. It always got a laugh!

For what it is worth, a good way of answering this type of question general is to look at GraceNote. This is the CDDB database, so contains all the tracks from some 5 million CDs - and many CDRippers can add the track names of anything they grab to CDDB, so it keeps fairly current.

Of course, it omits most things before the CD era.

No, guest Hootenanny. I learned it from Lizzie Higgins and her mother, Jeannie Robertson. My wife and I stayed with them in Aberdeen for a week in September, 1958. We had planned to camp outside of town, but Jeannie wouldn't hear of it. So we spread our sleeping bags out in the front room of their tiny house. In the mornings, Isaac, Donald Higgins' brother (Donald was Jeannie's husband, Lizzie's father), would bring us tea and scones, served to us "in bed." Every evening we sang, and sang, and then sang some more when neighbors dropped in to share the music. Jeannie kept asking me to sing the Virginia version of Mattie Groves that I had learned from Paul Clayton. Later, I heard two English singers singing that melody, with a good Scottish text worked out for it, and read that they had learned it from Jeannie.
Lizzie informed us that the REAL way to end "The Auld Maid in a Garret" was "I'll dee an auld maid in a garret. Wi' a carrot." Polite singers sang, "wi' a parrot," as did I when I recorded it for Elektra in 1959. I figured that was the wiser course, since I was earning my family's living by doing school assembly programs at that time, and felt some school authorities might object to hiring a singer of such bawdy material.
    Sandy

Re 'Sullivan's John', this is an old song of the Travelling People, based on fact, usually credited to Pecker Dunne, but almost certainly not in fact written by him, tho he probably re-wrote it somewhat. The lyrics will almost certainly be online somewhere. If they don't turn up, I'll post them later.

Thanks for that fine reminiscence of the time you and Caroline stayed with the great singer herself and family. I could see and hear you all as I read it. Jeanie Robertson was one of the great voices of the last century. (I want a scone now in the worst way!!)

I did mention your recording of this song in an earlier post.
