The Voice

I seek the voice of honesty,
Tell me where you are tonight;
Seven children killed today,
Who never should have gone to play,
Fathers hold their tears at bay,
A mother's son is on his way,
In Arlington they'll dig the grave,
And Mr Bush has this to say:
"We're here to set things right!"
I seek the voice of honesty tonight.

I seek the voice of honesty,
Tell me where you are tonight;
Neo-cons make cauldrons roil,
They light the fires and watch them boil,
Mr Bush sends troops to toil,
To kill, to die on foreign soil,
In a phony war, the perfect foil,
For friends of his who want the oil:
"We're here to set things right!"
I seek the voice of honesty tonight.

I seek the voice of honesty,
Tell me where you are tonight;
Machines of death take to the sky,
Civilians have no place to hide,
From weapons held by either side,
The sunset brings tears to my eye,
In words so crass, so smug, so snide,
Mr Bush with the age-old lie:
"We're here to set things right!"
I seek the voice of honesty tonight.

I seek the voice of honesty,
Tell me where you are tonight;
The television screens so clear,
Put lots of spin on what we hear,
With platitudes we hold so dear,
Truth really never does appear,
George Orwell got it right I fear,
And Mr Bush can't hide the sneer:
"We're here to set things right!"
I seek the voice of honesty tonight.

Bruce, if you're writing songs like this these days, you need to do another recording, dammit! I'd like to hear the tune for this one. I'd like to hear it on the radio, too.

I've been tired of transparent lies and the obvious spin that others can't seem to see for quite a while. Bush is starting (STARTING?!) to sound like that Charlie Brown grown-up, "Wah-wah-WAH-wah" voice. The words and meaning never change, just the date.

I seek the voice of honesty,
Tell me where you are tonight.
Bushs' puppet Tony Blair,
Bluffs it through without a care.
"Come fight with us if you dare,
These terrorists are everywhere".
But mainly in the oil rich land,
Come on buddy, lend a hand.
We're here to set things right,
I seek the voice of honesty tonight.

Better go get my cookie back...Nice one Bruce.
Best wishes, Mike.

When I first read this song, I first thought about the Iraqi war. But the terrible truth is that-with or without Bush's name-this song could be about other conflicts happening now or other conflicts that have happened in the past or-God help us-other conflicts that may happen in the future.

I found the third verse to be particularly powerful in its words and its emotions. And the beginning and ending lines of each verse-WOW is right!! These lyrics are so easy to remember and are unfortunately so true. We need to speak truth to the lies that are being programmed to us on a daily basis.

As Jeri said "Bruce, if you're writing songs like this these days, you need to do another recording, dammit! I'd like to hear the tune for this one. I'd like to hear it on the radio, too."

-snip-

And I'll add that I'd love to buy your CD!

I would like to hear it on the radio too, but I won't, sadly. It reminds me of a line from another song, "Songs like this should not be necessary." It's a very fine piece of work, but even more than hear it, I would sooner hear that some sense and honesty had prevailed in the world. With the other horrible news emerging from Lebannon, I fear I have a long wait. No disputing the quality of the work though.

Wonderful song, Bruce... There is a longing in the song which I like. Not just an angry diatribe about how terrible Bush is. I feel the hunger for peace (no pun intended) in the lyrics.

Good on you..

Thanks Bruce. The U.S. needs a good war protest song.

As a former soldier during the Viet Nam era, I could not understand that "war" (although I served my country) and I strongly disagree with the current "war".

How blind people are and there will NEVER be a way to get the majority to see how senseless the wholesale slaughter of other humans is. Self defense is natural; what is happening in Iraqi is just the opposite and unjustified.

Moral: Protest songs help. "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" helped me through the trying times of the Viet Nam conflict.

as i hear news of more conflict erupting in the mid east
I am saddened and horrified that so much suffering is on
the rise. Honesty is definately needed and also some common
sense and control on the part of those who are adding to
the escalating conditions. thank you for these words...
how can we get them to be heard by those who most need them??!~~

Thanks to all of you for the posts and comments.

It is my intent to somehow get this thing to mp3 and then put it on the www, a task for which I will likely return here seeking advice. I will post with the mp3 words to the effect that anyone who wants to do the song may, with my blessing. If there are cash proceeds from it, they may be given to a burn unit at a hospital near them. I agree with Alan: "Songs of this kind should not need to be sung, so let's lay down our drums."

Thanks again.

I beleive Songs of this kind should be sung ... music is a universal language ... sing it, and sing it far and wide .... what have we to lose, but it is much ( much needed) that we have to gain.

regardless on how you feel BM, thanks for the gift.

Joyce Andersen did something with a protest MP3 on her home page. Here's her home page, with pictures of her and Harvey's kid, who looks way too much like Harvey. Here's the page with just the song: Filled With Love. The lyrics are there, plus you can download the lyrics, the CD booklet and label art.

You could do something like this, you just need the files and a friend with webspace and some HTML skill to put up a simple web page for you.

Jacqui, it's trying to download an application for your browser to handle embedded thingies. I hate embedded thingies because they aren't saved and if you want to hear them again, you have to keep going back to the website.

Right click on the link above.
Select "save as" or whatever your browser uses that means "save the link as a file on your computer"
Save it, probably on your desktop where you can find it.

Click on it after it's downloaded. You should be able to use Windows Media player to listen to it.

I've got it, and all I can say is, "wow!"

Might be good faster, might be good with instrumental breaks, might be good with a full rock-anthem type of arrangement, bluegrass or acapella arrangement. I hear many possibilities, but most of all I hear a stong, clear, honest song.

Thanks Bruce, thanks Bruce's friend in Canada, and thanks Amos.

Please don't turn it into tacky with war pictures of torn up babies. This one stands on its own.
How do we women fall for it every time? We raise our children to be good and honest and loving and then we proudly turn them over to the likes of Bush to turn them into bloody pulp or worse heartless murderers.
Thanks, Bruce.

They are at our festival this weekend. I say ours because I do the booking. If you ever have the chance (don't know where you live.) get to see Terry Joe and Joe Grass together. Well, well, well. Just had an old uni buddy now living in Drayton Valley (Peace know's where it is... not far from him) send me an email about a great new "protest song" on the net. Apparently, it's sung by this here obscure Canadian folk artist from waaaaay back when we were kids at uni and it's all the rage. His daughter downloaded it for him! Hahahaha.

Seriously... good on ya. REAL good on ya.
