Remember the good old days when porn movies were shown in theaters, and not just rented in video stores? And there were burlesque shows starring strippers who had a bit of talent or skill (or other unique properties)—at least enough so that they hoped the audience would remember them by name?

Both strippers and porn films in those days had to have memorable names that could be advertised on the marquee sign outside the theater.

Often the porn film titles were clever take-offs on well-known contemporary film titles, catch phrases, etc., and strippers had names that parodied other famous people.

I only happen to remember one in each category:

"A Hard Man is Good to Find"

"Olivia Neutron Bomb"

In the mid-1960s I think, maybe the '70s, I took a photo of the marquee of the Plaza Theater on North Ave. in Chicago's Old Town area. I still have it.

But first, remember that Ian Fleming's James Bond books were very popular. Also, ABBA EBAN was the prime minister of Israel at that time.

It read:

ABBA E. BOND
AND HER GAZA STRIP

What goes around comes around, I guess. It just costs twice as much every time around!

Abba Eban was the foreign minister of Israel from 1966-1974. He was never prime minister.

Long Dong Silver was a well known male porn star, wasn't he? Then there were the strippers Ineeda Mann and Chesty Morgan. I don't think there's been one yet called Ima Hoare...wonder why? ;-)

It's true that the classic strippers usually had a pretty good act worked out, some cool dance moves, etc...that's not really necessary in today's porno films, is it?

"In and Out of Beverly Hills", starring (naturally) Beverly Hills. Saw it on a marquee in Times Square, but didn't see the movie.

I about LMAO once when I saw a decent-looking young woman stripping under the name "Kitty Litter".

I really don't know is there was a movie out years ago called "Genitals prefer Blondes", or if that was just a joke.

I think it was "Long Jeannie Silver" a stripper who had one deformed leg.

John Holmes went by a couple other names. "Johnny Wadd", I believe was one.

Makes me think of the Pussycat Treater chain - how widespread were/are they? I think they were all over California, but perhaps they were all over the U.S. Apparently, the one in Noth Highlands, a Sacramento suburb, is still open even though the military base across the street closed down.
Can anybody enlighten us about Pussycat theaters?

sIx, I do remember the Victory Burlesque on Spadina. It was the first place I saw pasties and a G-string when me and my friend Don hitch-hiked from Montreal to TO back in, I think it must have been 1966 or 1967. The Victory was a classic burlesque house with the orchestra in a pit and a bunch of seedy strippers with band-aids covering their nipples, strutting their stuff before a house full of lonely men in trench coats.

Whwn I worked for a newspaper selling advertising space to film distributors in Soho I remember someone buying ads for a film called 'Clockwork Nympho' with the slogan 'Wind her up and watch her...' or something

As an aside, I always thought you formed porn star names the time honoured way of taking your mother's maiden name and adding the name of your first pet - eg Hazell Dasher in my case.

(A bit like the deformity-fruit-US president combination for blues singers)

In the days of "Debbie Does Dallas" there was "Wanda Whips Wall Street" -- very funny movie and, if I recall correctly, they sort of forgot half way through that it was a fxxk film.

"Lust In the Dust" I think was only R-rated, but funny and I like the title.

I'm also fond of the cleverly twisted literary titles/allusions, most of which I can't think of at the moment. (But I think my brains melted this week and ran out my ears.)

One of my favorite films was "Take Off" -- the theme was Dorian Gray-esque and it went into send ups of old movies. Wonderful, clever film (with, of course, a lot of naughty bits).

I'll go check my film list and report back.

Talking of Linda Lovelace, I never saw Deep Throat, but I did see a now forgotten film called "Linda Lovelace for President." It wasn't much of a turn on, but it was funny in a camp sort of way. I got into the cinema just before the film started and they were playing "You Got It Bad Girl" from Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book", which encouraged me to check out the album. So you could say that Linda Lovelace started my obsession with Stevie Wonder. Thank you Linda, or should I say that London Soho Porno Cinema that played the music.
