Subject: Anything happening in OSLO ??? From: Betsy Date: 24 Jul 06 - 04:48 AM Fairly simple question - is there anywhere where acoustic music / Folk ,is played where I might join in, as I would like to bring my guitar to Oslo where I am presently working, but not sure whether its worth the trouble. It's not only Oslo , but also (pardon pun) our own towns and cities in the U.K. , in that , if there were a regular session going on somewhere, they wouldn't advertise in the normal newspaper or entertainment guide , it's either not cost-effective , or , people like to keep to the sessions to themselves, based on the notion , that , if you are REALLY interested you'll find out for yourself , one way or another. Writing to Mudcat is hopefully both, one way or another. See you at Saltburn . Fidjit, after I read your message on the Alex Campbell thread, I sent you a PM, but I suppose this supersedes it. Cheers, Betsy. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in OSLO ??? From: Fidjit Date: 24 Jul 06 - 11:47 AM Got your pm Betsy. Yes there is lots going on in Oslo. As you say it's almost like a secret society. However, The Dubliners is the place to get to. They have two sessions a week. Saturday and Tuesday. Saturday one is dying a bit now that the Celtic muzac trend is softening. The Tuesday evening one is the remnents of the "Jeppe's Folk Club that started in '75 (By Me) Best because the back room is better accoustically and the noisy front bar crowd aren't there. The Saturday one used to start at one Pm and go on until the band started up at ten pm. You had to be there early to get a seat. Now it seldom starts before five or six in the evening and there are plenty of seats. There are exceptional days. Depends on which band is booked. And they have gone down in quality lately. There is also a local "Song Writers Club" and a few, "Viseklubb" as they are called. This means, "Small Song Club" They have a society Norsk Viseforum. They are in the book. There's trad jazz every Saturday lunch time at the, "Gjestergiveri" Thats free There are also lots of concerts Paul Simon was there last year. Fairport were at the Irish festival a while ago too. Now the Irish Festival. Well? Thats another story. Another secret society. Enough for now. Chas |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in OSLO ??? From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Jul 06 - 11:54 AM Unfortunately we are forced to be a 'secret society' because of Financial restraints . A Folk Club charging admission cannot pay a reasonable fee to a guest , put adverts in local Folk Mags , print handouts for other clubs and sometimes pay rent to use a room and THEN Pay anything up to a hundred pounds for Newspaper adverts . And getting anything printed free is virtually impossible , unless you have a club member who works for the local paper !! |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in OSLO ??? From: Kevin Sheils Date: 24 Jul 06 - 12:18 PM I found folkmap.co.uk useful for finding a session and club when visiting different parts of the UK a few months back but haven't heard much of it recently. It still seems to be there but not sure how ell the updating is going. |
