The external shade temperature is currently 29.5 Degrees C here on the banks of the Tyne.
That is about average for this time of year.
Made me wonder what other 'Catters are tolerating/enjoying/enduring?

Yesterday morning I was on the phone with my sister in McMinnville, Oregon, a Willamette Valley town about 50 miles from Portland, where the temperature at 9:00 was already 84 degrees and they expected a high of 100.

Makes me shiver with foreboding.

Yesterday's high in Juneau, Alaska, where I live, was in the low 60s. I don't think I'd survive 'down south' these days.

Yesterday was the one decent day we in the Wash DC area have seen in 3 weeks...temp back up to 86°F today, and to be higher later this week.

Bill's Law of Averages is again proving accurate. We had a pleasant, cool and extended Spring....now we are paying for it.

In the high 70's/ low 80's here. Far too hot for this part of the world (north-east UK) .... particularly at night. I have to admit - it's years since I slept in the nude but its the only way to make the night bearable.

My father remembered in Emporia, Kansas in the 1930s, sleeping in the front yard because they couldn't bear to be inside. Temp stayed above 95° even at night. (no decent electric fans then)...The ice man was VERY popular.

Seattle. Mid-nineties yesterday. Rather uncomfortably warm. With Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east, there's plenty of water around to keep the humidity up.

Predicted to be in the high-eighties today. Pretty comfortable right now (9:45 a.m., PDT). 76 degrees.

Well here in Oz of course it's a different story, being winter. In the last month or so, temperatures have varied between 2 degrees C at night and about 18-19 on the warmer days. The last couple of weeks it has rained almost every day and the cloud cover means that temperatures don't vary much from day to night - 13-16 during the day and 7-10 minimum at night.

Right now it's 11 degrees C and raining buckets. You would think that this might help break the drought. Unfortunately though, the majority of the rain is falling near the coast, and not much in the catchment area. It's usually like that, and it makes me wish they would build a dam nearer to the coast, to take advantage of all this rain running down the gutters. I was thinking large tanks on top of some of the city buildings would be a good idea too.

Reading all these posts about the really hot weather reminds me what we will be in for in a few months. I find the weather we are having now easier to cope with than extreme heat! Much as I like the long days, warm balmy evenings and the jungle of veges in the garden, I don't look forward to day after day of temperatures in the 30's and 40's combined with high humidity, such as we have in Sydney in summer!

Houston:

It's cool here today because its overcast--86 degrees and 66% humidity (dry by our standards). Normal is about 95. 105+ on the pavement. And we can hit 95% humidity.

Rain doesn't help here. It just makes the humidity worse.

Official highs all last week around 111 - 113 F (43.9 - 45 C), although only one day I believe was a new record for the date. Up to 117 F (47 C) nearby in a few places.

A weekend of "cool weather" with highs 95 - 98 F (35 - 36.7 C), but the forcast is for more warm stuff for this coming week.

I vaguely recall one year in the late 50s when Wichita was "over 100F" for more than 30 days in a row; but during that spell I don't recall anything over about 105 F (40.6 C).

An equal concern is that although we've had about normal total rainfall it's all come in a few big storms that ran off instead of soaking in. Soil moisture is thus low, and the crops are burning.

Don: Seattle has been blazing the last few days, hasn't it?

A great time for my shower to suddenly start backing up through the bathroom floor basement drain...

*pacing furiously and muttering under my breath as I wait for my flaky landlady to call & tell me when the plumber will be arriving...GRRRRR!*

Luckily the girls upstairs are very kind and are letting me use their shower. Mr. Rogers would be proud.

Its been 33C or 96F for the past couple of days here on southern Vancouver Island, but it is supposed to cool off over the next couple of days to more seasonable temperatures. That's welcomed, because although I don't mind the heat in the day, I hate hot nights. The bush here is really dry, but it usually is this time of year.....same as it ever was.

I can remember times in the 1950's and 60's when the forests were closed regularly to the public nd industry here every summer because of extreme fire hazard. Also hob nailed boots were banned in forested areas because of their danger of producing sparks when walking.

Galiano Island, one of the BC Gulf Islands, has declared a state of emergency because of a, so far, uncontrolled forest fire there. Both my daughters went to film school on Galiano and we got to know a lot of people on the island. Our hearts are going out to George and the rest of the staff and hoping too that the school itself is out of danger soon, courtesy of a lot of valiant people and a few Mars water bombers. Watching the Mars in action is absolutely awesome and its too bad more bombers only carried water.

It reached 40.7 or 104.7F in Cache Creek yesterday, but it is always way warmer in the southern interior of BC. There is a thunderstorm warning for most of the interior so that doesn't bode well re forest fires there either.

Just a regular summer week in BC weather-wise by and large.

Its been in the mid-90's for about a week.

In Vancouver that means most everyone is at the beach. Others are taking refuge in the hockey rinks (especially if they have kids). Luckily, there is a strong NW wind that makes the heat bearable. The air pollution is gross.

I'm getting out of here and heading to my island paradise where I can be near the water.

my computer says it is 97 in the valley below here..a couple degrees cooler in the hills here. yesterday i think it went up to 107 and last night it stayed 100 until midnight when it finally dropped to the low of 72 overnight..107 is the expected high again today...yawn. it is getting tiresome..people's chickens are dying from the heat and power outages are happening cuz so many people are turning on electric fans, a/c, etc.

i have no air conditioner in my house but i do have a fan and i do have a/c in my car...and i do have a pond and creeks in which to dip.

My sympathies, Molly. I really hate it anytime the plumbing goes ka-fooze!

I just heard that yesterday it was 115o F. in Pasco, Washington, over in the Tri-Cities area (Hanford is just up the pike a ways). I usta woik in that town!!

I remember it getting up to 105o F. regularly during the middle and late summer. There was air conditioning everywhere and they would crank it way up. I'd leave the radio station, where the temperature was around 60o, after my morning shift and walk out into 105o weather. Then I'd drop into a nearby restaurant for lunch where the inside temperature would by about 60o. Then back out into the oven, and drive to the nearby Safeway to pick up something to stock the refrigerator in my apartment. In the Safeway, 60o. Then back outside.

A few little shifts like this and you could start feeling a bit dizzy.

Sure glad I'm not over there now!

Years ago I had a friend, Fred Melberg, who was in forestry when I knew him, but he'd worked in various capacities as a naturalist. For some strange reason, he had occasion to be up in far north Alaska during the winter. He and the party he was with got caught in the middle of nowhere when a storm blew up, and there was no shelter around. So, quick like a bunny, they started packing up snow and built an igloo. Kind of a sloppy one, but it offered them shelter from the ravages of the storm. Inside the igloo, the temperature was about 35o F. It measured around -50o outside. Fred had occasion to crawl outside to get something, and as he slithered through the narrow tunnel they had cobbled together, it occurred to him that, between his feet and his head, there was a temperature difference of about 85 degrees.

When he was living in Seattle, he had an interesting pet. A fully-armed skunk. But that's a whole nother story.

Don Firth

Warm is a week or two in February. Spring is always a mixed bag of changability often ending in snow or hail in the first week of June then it turns hot. It's been running from 105 to 110 F, for highs around Lake Co. CA, not really unusual for us but every year people act like it's never been that hot before. When I was about seven or eight I remember a two or three day period in So. Cal when it stayed around 117, 118 F. Too bad no one had thought of global warming back then. We could have blamed it on that instead of "nature".

Here in Paris it has been around 33-38,for about 6weeks now.
This is made worse by the high level of pollution.
Two years back 15,000 people died of heat related problems throughout France.A lot of Blah Blah was spouted at the time, and a lot of embarassed faces were seen pontificating on TV.
It's true that so far, there has been an enormous reduction in casualties, but this is due to the awareness of people on the ground, lots of publicity on TV, and the media in general.
The gvt havent been exactly visible so far.No change there then!

Dave Swan, Slag, Open Mike, and I are all sweltering in Northern California. I'm a couple of thousand feet above them, but it still have been darn hot here - over 100 degrees (38 degrees Centigrade) many days over the last week. My mother-in-law lives with us, and she's 91 years old and suffering badly. She hides in the dark in her air-conditioned room much of the day. Our two little dogs keep her company, which helps a lot - but it's still really hard for her. It's hard for us to make sure she eats and drinks enough, too.

It has been 8-12 degrees above average in western Colorado since the first of May. For the past month it has been high 90's to mostly over 100 every damn day with little respite, though I am grateful it is still cooling down a little bit at night. This is NOT normal, except for August. I'm with Alice, see the Inconvenient Truth thread and do what you are able.

Right now in Portland, OR, it's a "balmy" 95 degrees (35 C) and climbing -- although I don't think we'll get to 100 today; yesterday it was 101 (38 C). Saturday it was only 93 (33 C), but with 70% humidity (shades of Chicago). Friday it was 104 (40 C). The dogs have been hiding in the basement. We've been hiding with them. They say it should be safe to come out tomorrow. . .

"But it's a dry heat!" is a standing joke in Sacramento. You see it quoted in the newspaper all the time. Just about everybody agrees that Sacramento is miserable during the summer. We don't get it so bad here in the Sierra Foothills, but this last week has been awful.

Hi Kat

Well, there's a word other than romance that rings better in that expression (best left on the fireline, I suppose) which usually ends the discussion. Glad you got a chuckle. And it IS that hot.

I was issued new grass gear today (the bright yellow stuff you see firefighters wearing on brush fires) and was reminded of a friend's description of fighting brush fire. He says it's like putting on too many clothes and weeding next to your barbeque on a really hot day. He's right. I far prefer a structure, but we don't get to choose.

I did my main army tour at Yuma Arizona, at the desert environmental test station. For quite a few of our tests, if we didn't get to at least 105F (40.5C) we'd have to wait a day for "better test conditions." We didn't wait out too many days. One particular day when I stood in one spot too long on the blacktop tank test track, I left a rather large puddle where the boot polish melted and ran off my boots. I think the surface temp we measured on the blacktop that day was somewhere around 165F, although the air "shade temp" was only about 108F. Many vehicle surfaces (esp. sheetmetal) would blister your hands if you touched them.

When things started to cool off one fall, and we couldn't get even consistent 100F for testing, they loaded up half of the people and sent them to Wainright Alaska to run winter environmental tests. Up there, -30F (-34C) was considered the maximum temperature at which some of the tests were good, and some of them said they saw "a few days" of -60F.

I was in the middle of an 11 month endurance test on one of my vehicles, so I didn't get to go north. Just a stroke of (BG) bad luck, I guess.

I hadn't paid much attention to the humidity during our past week here, but one of the old newspapers that was still in the bin said that on a day when the high was 111F, the RH was at 87%; so I guess here it's been the heat and the humidity.

One forecaster on TV the other night was claiming that the "average monthly temperature" for every month since May has been at least 10F above the long term average for the month. Since there are several ways they can calculate those averages, and he didn't say which way he used, I'm less than fully impressed; but it does seem that it's been fairly consistently warmer than I remember from my younger lifetime.

John

Speaking of Hell, I think I've got you all beat ( one-upsmanship!) I grew up in the welding business in Delano CA. Delano is usually hotter than just about anywhere except Death Valley and Redding on most summer days. So imagine a metal building a blast forge running most of the day, a couples of guys on the big acetylene torches putting hardface on plowshares. Somehow you got used to it. You'd drink a lot of water and take salt tablets. Your clothes stayed dry because the sweat would evaporate so fast that you really didn't see it most of the time. By day's end your boots, pants, shirt would be rimed with salt. I don't believe I could that again and live!!!

It's unpleasantly sweltering at about 90 here in central Massachusetts, but I just came home from a few weeks in the UK, where the last week was every bit as bad! It was absolutely shocking: I've spent a good deal of my life in England, and have literally never encountered such unremittingly sunny, hot, sticky, uncomfortable conditions for such an extended period.

T'ain't natural, or even marginally pleasant, to my mind; there's a REASON I travel to the UK in the summer! Add to this the fact that there just aren't the necessary infrastructural weapons (like lots & lots & lots of ice cubes, air conditioning in most public places, etc), and it makes for a pretty uncomfortable state of affairs!

Looking forward to the autumn, or at least a passing thunderstorm...

Slag (whose name now makes sense),

I spent January to July one year working outside in the Scottish highlands, then came back to the States and took work as a welder in Turlock, CA on July 5th. I remember driving to the steelyard and watching a time/temperature sign flickering between 108 and 110. As you say, salt rimed everything. I almost never wore leathers as the occasional dingleberry or welder's tan was preferable to another layer.

I think Delano and Turlock are located on about the same ring of Hell.

There are quite a few of the bushes around here - I live in Parkstone, on the ridge above the town of Poole, Dorset, and some days it is hardly possible to see the flowers with the bees and butterflies on them, with more stacked up waiting to land all around.

Same story from everywhere, more extreme weather, record sales and usage of air conditioners leading to record electricity demand...leading to more power stations... burning more coal..aargh!
And then there's the nuclear option just in case we haven't phucked up the planet enough yet.
Now here's the strange thing, Sanyo, Sanwa et all can churn out airconditioners at incredibly low prices but can't get their shit together to produce solar panels at a sensible price.
Computers and all the electronic goodies have improved in price/performance by a thousandfold and more but somehow the much simpler technology of solar voltaic has gone nowhere.
Solar radiation is highest at the same time aircon need is greatest so no need for expensive batteries, just need solar electricity for 10 Cents per watt rating instead of the $10 per watt we have been stuck on forever.
Will it ever happen?
I doubt it

Solarac looks interesting Alice but at $7000 (after state rebates)plus installation it is about 4 times the price of the air conditioner that it would run.
Needs to be a huge price improvement before it will be taken up in serious numbers.
Compared to the improvements made in other electronic gizmos, solar is still in the stone age.

solarac.com - system sends power back to the utility most months of the year, when you are not using the electricity for your air conditioning. So, you are reducing your electic bill overall.

Solar powered fans - you can get a small one that fits in your car window to cool the car while it is parked in the sun. You can buy a cap with a little solar panel in it that runs a fan to cool your head.... or, you can get an attic fan that has roof top solar panel to cool your house, or use it in your RV.

Interesting to read here of the conditions in 2006 in the UK. That was an exceptional summer, one of the warmest ever recorded. It was also very dry here in Cornwall; we had just four inches of rain in four months.

We've had more than our usual share of good, or at at least half-decent, summers since then. We've also had a run of very mild winters. This spring in England has been exceptionally dry and sunny. The wind has been in the east at times, which pegs temperatures back. But overall it's going to go down as a vintage spring. I have a deep Mediterranean tan already, and that's just from doing the gardening...

I love heat, any amount of it. I must be a lizard or something!
It was 25C yesterday, and I sat on The Bench out the front in full sunshine in a cardigan. The oil tanker arrived and the oil man was perspiring like a fountain, poor bloke. He couldn't believe I had a woolly on. He filled our tank (we kept well away from each other) and I put an ice-cold can of Diet Coke from my husband's stash in the fridge on the pavement for him. He gulped it down thankfully. I had a nice hot cup of tea after he'd left!

Central heating on here today, as it's cold wet and windy in the highlands today. 10C, it must be nearly June.

It isn't just that people are itching to get out of the house:
here in Massachusetts, where the restrictions have been eased,
people are looking for lakes to swim in
because it's baking hot in the sunshine.

No miserable humidity, though --
that will come along soon enough.

In Stratford, Ontario, it snowed two weeks ago, I finally turned off the furnace last week, and on Saturday the air-conditioner kicked on for the first time. The electric fans are out of winter storage in the interest of less-sweaty sleep.

Yesterday, I sweated buckets while transplanting a couple of hosta and desultorily pulling a few weeds. We have now officially entered Beer On The Porch season.

Next: killer humidity, and the pong of pig-farming when the wind is in the wrong quarter, which is most of them.

It was 89F (32C) today. Less than 2 weeks ago we had snow on the ground. There was a day last week where we had a morning frost and then it went up to 70. Here in Ohio we say "If you don't like the weather just hang around because it is sure to change.

It's usually around 90F (mid thirties C) in Abidjan. My in-laws are quite used to this, including the high humidity. Occasionally the Harmattan (seasonal wind) blows and it gets what they call 'a bit chilly' (about 80F)
When husband visits them, he's sweltering for the first few days and panting for breath, but then he acclimatises. When he gets back to UK he's shivering at first and wears his woolly jumper for a bit!

The cicadas, both annual and periodic, are cold-blooded.
They can only sing and propagate their species
when they are warmed up by the sun.
It's cicada season in certain spots.

Not warm here at all, though; you?

When I lived in Abidjan it never got below the *high* 80's. I would wear a sweater.

It didn't get above the mid-90's usually either. But go inland, even Korhogo, aand it got a LOT hotter. Aah, it was nice.

Going even farther inland and it got dry, and even hotter, wow.

Now I have broken down and put on the AC in my bedroom, so the rest of my house is really hot in comparison. Summer is approaching Charlottesville. One of the main reasons I like it here is that it never got hot enough, or humid enough, for my preferences, when I lived in the Boston area. Aaah. High heat and high humidity. Now if only I could go to the beach!

I must be a boreal creature because I loathe hot weather; my pale, fragile skin breaks out in a prickly rash except in the corners where the eczema runs riot, and my respiratory system goes all asthmatic and hostile.

Southern Ontario can get quite spectacularly hot, but never for long; within a few days, an equally spectacular thunderstorm will brew up, the world explodes with racket and rain, and the day after is fresh and about five degrees (Celsius) cooler, if not more. In Stratford, the extreme heat is an inconvenience; in Toronto, full as it is of stinking, belching motor vehicles, it's utter misery.

Today, the sky is clear, the air is still, and a gentle pong of pig manure permeates the area. Environment Canada is pretty sure we will have a thunderstorm before the day is out, and my aching feet tend to agree.

Charmion also hates cold weather, which means life is not as easy for her as it is for the rest of us in Ontario.

Life got easier when I decamped to Perth County, brother dear. Winter as you know it in Ottawa hardly ever happens here, and we have magnolias and azaleas all over the place to prove it.

Donuel, Mrrzy will correct me if I'm wrong,
and I hope I'm using the right non-binary pronoun here,
but -- they -- were at Tufts Medical School, I believe.

I don't do the non binary crap, I am barely analog let alone digital.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
