Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:19 PM Spaw, I have the same dog problem with what used to be my garden plot. And keeping stuff moist enough in pots is difficult. I've started planting tomatoes in my front yard, and they've done well when we aren't in a drought, so I may resume planting out there for a fall garden. My dogs have found all of the volunteer onions from the last garden. They dig them up and eat the whole thing. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: bobad Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:21 PM SRS, do you know that onions are toxic to dogs, they cause hemolysis of the red blood cells, and a large enough dose can be fatal. |
Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:30 PM No, I didn't know that. The catahoula dug these up one at a time at the green onion size, and it was a number of weeks back. She'd come up to me with a breath that smelled like she worked in a pizza parlor. Rather pleasant, acutally. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: GUEST,Old Guy Date: 31 Jul 06 - 11:35 PM I had me a mater sandwich today and I fried up some green maters and zucchini squash. I use eggs and a little half and half for dip and crushed crackers like Ritz or Club crackers for breading and I sprinkle on some salt, pepper and garlick and fry in olive oil. While I was fryin, I got to thinkin about what fried nanners might taste like. I cleaned out the pan and put in fresh oil, cracked another egg and mashed up some more crackers so the seasoning wouldn't get into the nanners. The fried nanners were better that the maters and squash put together, It intensifed the flavor so it tasted like nanner puddin only better. |
Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: Scoville Date: 01 Aug 06 - 02:27 PM Who needs ripe? Saute green tomatoes with onion, yellow squash, and zucchini (or wilt them in broth). Season to taste and serve with sprinkling of parmesan cheese. Mmm-mmmm, good. |
Subject: RE: BS: 1st Ripe Tomater!!!.... From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Aug 06 - 04:03 PM The tomatoes are even getting ripe in Maine now. Usually we have to wait until mid-August. This has also been a great summer for wild chanterelle mushrooms, so nice sauteed in butter with sour cream mixed in at the end. Charley Noble |
