Subject: RE: Mining Songs: Last Pit in the Rhondda From: Wolfgang Date: 19 Aug 06 - 04:55 PM in this thread (misleadingly titled) Roberto asks for a song starting like this: In every village in the Rhondda Children cry for want of meat Throughout the land their fathers wander Singing for pennies in the street. I'm interested as well. Is this perhaps one of the songs on the recording? Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: Mining Songs: Last Pit in the Rhondda From: MARINER Date: 14 Aug 06 - 04:15 PM Great to hear "The Last Pit2 is out on C.D. It is without doubt one of the best recordings of songs about miners , performed by the finest singer to come out of Wales. I have the original on vinyl and have been eagerly waiting word of a C.D. release. So, anyone know how we get it? Apart from travelling over to Cardiff, that is. |
Subject: RE: Mining Songs: Last Pit in the Rhondda From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Aug 06 - 07:46 PM I bought the tape in 1986 (or thereabouts). It's well done, if slightly too sentimental in places for my taste ('Tiger Bay' in particular), and Dave has a good voice. I could provide some of the lyrics that are not in the DT yet if anybody is interested. |
Subject: RE: Mining Songs: Last Pit in the Rhondda From: Nigel Parsons Date: 13 Aug 06 - 12:09 PM Just re-read the case-notes, originally recorded in 1986, recently re-mastered & re-released CHEERS Nigel |
Subject: Mining Songs: Last Pit in the Rhondda From: Nigel Parsons Date: 11 Aug 06 - 03:47 PM Tuesday night at the BBC club in Cardiff, Frank Hennessy was having a night off. This left the club to be run by Dave Burns. Dave is well known for his work with The Hennessys & Ar Log. He took the opportunity to boost his new CD. (I took the opportunity to get a copy!!) "Last Pit In The Rhondda" 1, "Farewell to the Rhondda" written by Frank Henessy. (early 70's) 2, "Hearts on Fire" also frank, 1980's 3, "The Gresford Disaster" (author unknown) explosion at the Gresford Colliery, Wrexham 1934 4, "Tiger Bay" another Frank song, based on a 1929 poster for a new (if not better) life in USA 5, "Maggie's Hit Man" written during the '84/'85 strike by Colin Lewis (ex-miner from Pontlottyn) 6, "Roll On The Day" Allan Taylor sums up the agony of miners suffering from dust-related diseases. 7, Cân y Glowr" Written by Dafydd Iwan to the traditional "The Four Marys" tells of an old miner walking through a , now, desolate valley. 8, "Sacco and Vanzetti" Two Italian immigrants to the US at the turn of the twentieth century, involved in the organisation of labour, framed & executed in 1926. Pardoned by the US government 50 years later (lucky them!!) 9, "Joe Hill" Joe Hill was an activist in the 'wobbly movement' (Industrial Workers of the World, IWW) executed in Utah, 1915. 10, "The Ha'penny Strike" Based on the 1910 strike, written by Welsh actor Ray Smith from Trealaw in The Rhondda, close to where the incidents in the song took place. 11, "Mardy" The Last Pit in the Rhondda was the inspiration for this song, written by Dave Rogers of the Banner Theatre Company based in Birmingham. 12, "John O' Dreams" Singer/songwriter Bill Caddick wrote the words to a theme from Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony (the Pathetique) The CD was made with the financial support of the South Wales NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) My copy of this CD was bought straight from Dave last Tuesday at a cost of £10-. I didn't check for P&P details, and I don't like putting e-mail addresses in an open forum. If you're interested, then PM me CHEERS Nigel ps I'm not on a 'cut'! |
