Subject: RE: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Helen Date: 16 Jan 17 - 01:31 PM Hi all, Thanks for this thread. My parents used to sing this song sometimes. I have never, ever heard the funny variations on the song. We used to have a funny plastic ashtray with a comical man hanging on to a lamp post, looking very inebriated. I think the caption on it was Show Me the Way to Go Home. I remember that we used to sing the song when we saw it. The Frank Crumit recording shows that it is a good ukulele song, and would be good for a sing-along with uke players. Thanks for the memories of this song. Helen |
Subject: RE: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Helen Date: 16 Jan 17 - 01:37 PM Ooops! Wrong!! The ash tray said: "Oh, what a beautiful evenin'!!" I think we used to sing that song too when we looked at the ashtray, but the one I remember singing was SMTWTGH. I don't know where we got it from, and I think it is here somewhere from when we cleared out my dear departed Dad's house, but I wouldn't sell it even for $AU45. It's a treasured memory from my childhood. Helen |
Subject: RE: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 17 Jan 17 - 10:45 AM There's seemingly another version of the song of which a copy of the sheet music is available on Tredwell's Music site. The narrative says this: Show Me the Way to Go Home, Margaret B. Toohey and Harold W. Bradley, sheet music, out of print, rare, deleted, vintage, discontinued, collectible 1925 Harold W. Bradley The discovery of this sheet provides proof to contradict the popular notion that this song was written by a British song writing team. Toohey and Bradley were actually musicians, who lived, performed and composed here in our city of Winnipeg. For decades, Margaret Toohey actually ran a music shop, The Music Exchange, in direct competition to Tredwell's.....closing her doors in 1965. The fact that the lyrics to our version are quite tame in comparison to the more commonly sung, bawdy version, lends credence to the notion that the Brits simply changed a few lyrics and called the song their own. The mystery lies in the fact that nobody in Winnipeg knows the ties of Toohey and Bradley to this song. It begs the question: "In light of the huge international success of this song, why didn't Toohey and Bradley contest their ownership through public disclosure and/or lawsuit?" We have placed a whopping price tag on this sheet until we can unearth evidence that this song was not written by our fellow Winnipeggers |

Well I too remember hearing people sing this in Swedish when I lived in Sweden. Here's the text to Visa mig hur man går hem as recorded by Lasse Lönndahl och Towa Carson ...

The song, "Show me the Way" is pivotal to its plot. Subject: RE: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Gavin Paterson Date: 22 Jan 17 - 12:50 PM There is another version of this song. It's on The Clancy Brothers LP of the same name from 1972. This album has never had a digital re-issue and is not very well known these days. Their version has the 'No matter where I roam' lines but not the 'I'm tired and I want to go to bed' section. And they credit I. King (as above) as the writer. I've never heard this version anywhere else (but I have recorded it myself). Anyone know of this version? Show Me The Way 1 I have watched the days melt and fade away Ten thousand times or more And I have drawn ten thousand conclusions In the sand along the shore Chorus No matter where I roam over land or sea or foam You will always hear me singing that song Show me the way to go home. 2 I've waited in the sun and listened to everyone of the questions that you pose And I have found the answers In the petals of a rose 3 I've watched you come and go, and learned enough to know There's nothing left to see And in my time I've loved a girl And I known that she loved me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKDfHbe61PI |

Subject: Lyr Add: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME (Irving King) From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Aug 18 - 11:56 AM Finally! We have definitive lyrics from the sheet music! You can see the sheet music at the website of Baylor University. SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME Words and music by Irving King,* ©1925. 1. When I'm happy, when I'm happy, singing all the while, I don't need nobody then to show me how to smile. When I've been out on a spree, toddling down the street, With this little melody everyone I greet: CHORUS: Show me the way to go home. I'm tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago, And it's gone right to my head. Wherever I may roam, On land, or sea, or foam, You can always hear me singing this song: Show me the way to go home. 2. Old King Cole was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he. He called for his wine and he called for his pipe and he called for his fiddlers three. When they'd had a high old time, all the whole night through, What was it that King Cole said and his fiddlers too? CHORUS EXTRA VERSES: 1. Miss Fitzsimmon went in swimmin' early one summer morn. She took a dip and she heard a rip and she knew her suit was torn. She stayed till the change of tide took the water out. When no longer she could hide, she began to shout: CHORUS 2. At a ball game where they all came just to see Babe Ruth swat, The bases three were full and he stepped out to take a shot. Three balls and two strikes he heard; on the next, he fouled. Then the guy who stood on third cleared his throat and howled: CHORUS 3. My friend Jack went to the track and a big bankroll he bet. He bet upon a horse named Don and the darn thing's running yet. He was forty miles from town as the pigeons fly. He put his last dollar down and began to cry: CHORUS 4. Mamie Flynn went riding in a stranger's motor car. He tried to kiss this charming miss, but he never got that far. She hit him an awful smack; they were ten miles out, And as she was walking back, he could hear her shout: CHORUS 5. Mister Wright came home one night quite unexpectedly, And in his house, he caught his spouse with her affinity. As the husband's gun was pressed to his rival's head, He said: "Make your last request" and the stranger said: CHORUS 6. Mister Devil to the level came from down below. The first night he went up to see the Ziegfeld Follies show. When the dollies danced about dressed so scantily, He got up and shouted out: "It's too hot for me!" CHORUS 7. Buying drinks, a lot of ginks gathered in a swell cafe. A Scotchman who had quite a few was feeling rather gay. He kept drinking with each guy as the hours fled. When it came his time to buy, he stepped up and said: CHORUS 8. Jack McCann once took a man up in his aeroplane. He looped the loop, then made a swoop and looped the loop again. His friend paled and mopped his brow; then the flyer cried: "What else can I show you now?" and his friend replied: CHORUS * Wikipedia says "Irving King" is the pseudonym of the English songwriting team James Campbell and Reginald Connelly.
Note there is internal rhyme in most of the verses. The rhyme scheme goes: |

It's from the Australian Senior Scout Song Book, compliments of Sandra in Sydney. GIRL ON BURLEIGH BEACH (Tune: “Show Me the Way to Go Home”) Show me the way to go home, Said a girl on Burleigh beach, I had a swimsuit on about an hour ago, But it's floated out of reach. Subject: Lyr Add: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME (Jones & Hare) From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Jun 21 - 07:26 PM My transcription from the Edison record at the Internet Archive: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME As recorded by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare (The Happiness Boys) on Edison 51660-R, 1925. 1. When I’m happy, when I’m happy, singing all the while, You* don’t need nobody then to show you* how to smile. When I’ve been out on a spree, toddling down the street, With this little melody everyone you* greet: [Chorus 1] Show me the way to go home; I’m tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago and it’s gone right to my head. Wherever I may roam, on land or sea or foam, You can always hear me singing’ this song: show me the way to go home. 2. Old King Cole was a merry old soul and a merry old soul was he. He called for his wine and he called for his pipe and he called for his fiddlers three. When they’d had a high old time all the whole night through, What was it that king Cole said and his fiddlers too? [Chorus 2] Show me the way to go home; I’m tired and I want to go to bed. Anyone at all can push a fountain pen, but a pencil must be lead. I’ve tried to figure out, but can’t get through my dome. Can a fellow bounce a codfish ball? Show me the way to go home. [Patter omitted here] 3. Miss Fitzsimmon went in swimmin' early one summer morn. She took a dip and she heard a rip and she knew her suit was torn. She stayed till the change of tide took the water out, And when no longer she could hide, she began to shout: [Chorus 3] Show me the way to go home; I’m tired and I want to go to bed. Say, if they print the papers up in black and white, how can the news be read? I’ve tried to figure out, but can’t get through my dome Why a hot dog has no pedigree. Show me the way to go home. 4. Jack McCann once took a man up in his aeroplane. He looped the loop, then made a swoop and looped the loop again. His friend paled and mopped his brow; then the flier cried: "What else can I show you now?" And his friend replied: [Chorus 4] Show me the way to go home; I’m tired and I want to go to bed. In old Kentucky no one ever tasted cake; everything down there is bred. I’ve tried to figure out, but can’t get through my dome: Can a man make spongecake out of a sponge? Show me the way to go home. [Patter omitted here.] [Repeat Chorus 1.] * * * * The pronouns may seem odd because Jones and Hare sing alternate lines; one sings in the first person, the other in the second. They do this in many of their recordings. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: GUEST,LarryTheRadioGuy Date: 27 Aug 21 - 10:21 PM Gavin Peterson asked about whether anybody had heard those different lyrics to Show Me The Way To Go Home. You mentioned, Gavin, that you'd heard them on a hard to find Clancy Brothers release from 1972. I have a 1968 album by Noel Harrison (Santa MOnica Pier) with those same lyrics. And I can't find any reference to them anywhere else. So I'm wondering if anybody has heard these lyrics anywhere other than through Noel Harrison or The Clancy Brothers. Are they original lyrics written by the two songwriters? Or is it a music hall addition? Or did Noel Harrison write them himself (although he gives credit to Irving King--the psuedonym for the two songwriters who wrote the song)? |

Show me the way to go home, I'm tired and I want to go to bed I had a little taste about an hour ago and its gone right to my head No matter where I roam, over land or sea or foam You will always hear me singing this song, show me the way to go home.
