Subject: RE: show me the way to go home From: Louie Roy Date: 16 Nov 00 - 11:34 PM Show me the way to go home has a lot of history and it is associated to songs that were published in 1823 and in 1867 although it wasn't written until 1926.It does have 4 verses and a chorus and I have danced to it many many times.I do have all the words to these three songs but to put them on mudcat I have trouble because if you are going to post something you should be able to do it, so if someone wants to sing it,it is not all in a story form.I know there is a way to post a tune in verses but like I said I lack this knowledge. If someone want to share this knowledge with me I'll be glad to supply the lyrics and the history plus the authors.any help availble Louie Roy |

Subject: Lyr Add: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Irving King) From: Louie Roy Date: 13 May 01 - 04:07 PM Joe, this is the history of SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME and it was handed down to me from my great grand dad through my grand dad through my dad and I grew up with dancing to SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME at the barn dances all through the 1930s and the 1940s and even into the 1950s that were held nearly every Saturday night somewhere in the country in Northern Idaho. In 1823 HOME SWEET HOME was written by John Howard Paine and the music was written by Sir Henry R Bishop. This tune was the closing tune at all barn dances in West Virginia until 1867 when GOOD NIGHT LADIES was written. I don't have the artist. Then the closing tune at the dances was HOME SWEET HOME followed by GOOD NIGHT LADIES. In 1926 Irving King wrote SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME. From that day forth the closing tunes were HOME SWEET HOME, GOOD NIGHT LADIES and then SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME. SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME (Irving King, 1926) 1. When I'm happy, when I'm happy, singing all the while, I don't need nobody then to show me how to smile. When I've been out on a spree, toddling down the street, With this melody everyone I greet: CHORUS: O, show me the way to go home. I'm tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago and it all went to my head. Wherever I may roam, on land or sea or foam, You can always hear me singing this song: Show me the way to go home. 2. Buying drinks, a lot of gents gathered in a small swell café. A Scotchman who had quite a few was feeling rather gay. He kept drinking with each guy as the hours fled. When it comes his time to buy, he stands up and said: CHORUS 3. Old King Cole was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he. He called for his pipe and he called for his wine, and he called for his fiddlers three. When they'd had a high old time, all the whole night through, What was it that King Cole said and all the fiddlers too? CHORUS

Subject: RE: show me the way to go home From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 13 Oct 02 - 06:57 PM Here's yet another version of the "wordy" translation, which is preferable in my not so humble opinion: Indicate the route to my abode; I'm fatigued and desire to retire. Subject: RE: show me the way to go home From: Kaleea Date: 15 Oct 02 - 02:13 AM I learned this song from an alzheimers' resident in a nursing home when I was an activities director. The lyrics are not due to the alzheimers', but rather it was just the way the lady, who had a terrific sensse of humor, always sang it. Home me the way to go show! I'm barred & I want to go to Ted. I had a little hour about a drink ago, & it went right to my head. No matter where I roam, on land or sea or foam, You can always hear me a-singin this song: Home me the way to go show! |

Harry Reser and His Orchestra, 1925. Tommy Christian and His Orchestra, 1925. Unfortunately, they only sing the chorus, not the verses. (You can, however, hear snatches of other songs such as HOME SWEET HOME, HOW DRY I AM, etc., between choruses.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Rowan Date: 25 Nov 08 - 05:22 PM In a YMCA camp (Buxton, Christmas 1949) I learned the following in the "official" singing sessions Oh show me the way to go home I'm tired and I want to go to bed I had a little drink about an hour ago and it's gone right to my head Wherever I may roam on land or sea or foam you will always hear me singing this song show me the way to go home. Followed by a second verse, similar to several above, but with variations Oh indicate the route to my abode I'm fatigued and desire to retire I imbibed some refreshment sixty minutes ago and it's done right to my cerebellum wherever I may perambulate on land or sea or agitated water you will always hear me humming this melody indicate the route to my abode. In the unofficial singing sessions a third verse was learned, similar to Alan's, but with a more Victorian (Oz) flavour Oh show me the way to go home said the blonde on St Kilda beach I lost my togs about an hour ago and they've floated out of reach so all I have on now is sand and sea and foam so hand me a page of the Sporting Globe * and show me the way to go home. At the main Session Bar at the National Folk Festival (every Easter in Canberra) you will probably hear it sung with the 'original' verse repeated as a chorus and reprise. * a Thursday evening tabloid, printed on coloured newsprint, with only sporting info in it. Subject: Origins: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: IanC Date: 08 Oct 09 - 09:52 AM As Louie Roy says above, the version of "Show Me The Way To Go Home" (or at least the lyrics) appears to have been written by Irving King (who also wrote "The More We Are Together") in or before 1925, when it was published. From Wikipedia ...
It appears that they wrote both lyrics and melody in this case, though ... The song was written on a train journey from London where both James Campbell and Reginald Connelly were travelling. They were tired from the trip and had a few drinks during the journey, hence the lyrics. It appears that the song was pretty popular straightaway. It was recorded by Ella Sheilds(1879-1952) and by Wendell Hall(1886-1969), for the Brunswick label, in 1925, the year of its publication. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 09 Oct 09 - 04:41 PM I learned it, Dartmouth c. 1956, as: Delineate the road to my abode, I'm fatigued and I desire to retire, I imbibed a small infusion sixty minutes ago, And it went right to my cerebellum, Regardless to what terminus I perambulate, Terra firma, aqua vita, or alcoholic beverages, You will invariably detect me chanting this air: Delineate the road to my abode. Whereupon my brain being on jitters, I was guilty of worse: Steer me in the direction of my domicile, I tire of the vertical, I incline to recline, I have not in my possession any cartographic replica Illustrating routes to my beloved place of residence, Perchance an individual among you, Endowed by his creator with inordinately sympathetic Sentiments will not be loath to indicate the exit and Steer me in the direction of my domicile. Whew! Confession eases the mind. Bob So ... instruct me how to wend my way chez moi, By some means not unbefitting an exhausted individual Unused to venturing upon the homeward path While intoxicating substances are damaging his cranium, Though chances are I may be discovered perdu At unheard-of distances from the familial hearthstone, I will nevertheless entertain you with encores of this hit smash: Instruct me how to wend my way chez moi. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jul 15 - 03:27 AM So, I got a personal message from a Young Person, asking me for ABC notation for "Show Me the Way to Go Home." I looked through lots of songbooks, but couldn't find the dots for the song. I think I learned it in Boy Scouts in about 7th grade, about 1960. I can't think of how many times I've sung that song. I was amazed to find a Frank Crumit recording of the song from 1926 (attributed to Irving King [see above], published in 1925): And then I found a recording by the Andrews Sisters that's just terrific: And for a more modern interpretation, here's Emerson, Lake, and Palmer: But I couldn't find this song in a songbook. Can anybody help me with that? -Joe- |
