Searching for song, thought it was called 'Blue' or 'Dog Named Blue'.

"...Got an old dog, and his name is Blue.....bet your life he's a good dog too.."

Anybody know where I can find lyrics/chords?

One version was recorded by Burl Ives, many years ago. Another was practically a signature tune for Guy Carawan. I'd suggest you find and listen to both. Good hunting!

Oh, I think I'd vote for The Dillards version, complete with social commentary. They reasoned that anyone who had been driven out of their privy by their hound dog was not going to sing the song like Joan Baez!

First time I heard this song was im am oyster bar in Suffolk, it was wonderfully sung by A woman from Nova Scotia who said she learned it from her grandfather and that the song, in all its versions, was widely known there. Her version ended

Seems to me, my ex had an old album of Montana Slim doing this song, in the most sorrowful, old cowboy way possible. Had a hard time listening to it for all the tears it brought up.

Kat, I had the great honour to play on a show with Montana Slim a few years ago. He was probably in his 90s (or late 80s by then) and was still a wonderful singer. He rarely used the nickname given to him by a Chicago radio station many years ago and usually went by his real name of Wilf Carter. He was a real cowboy and told the audience about his ranch days in Alberta. I remember also that he was an amazing yodeler and showed total respect for the audience. I believe he passed on last year.

My Wilf Carter albums are among my most treasured. He passed away on December 5, 1996, aged 91. Here is a page devoted to him, with links to other sites as well, including a tribute by Ian Tyson. I could not find a reference to Old Blue on the Bear Family set. (Don't have it, but I wish I did)

Right after I hit "submit", I remembered that it was "Ol' Shep" instead of Blue, I think. And, yes, I treasured that album, too. It was one of the few things my ex took with him; but, he left me our daughter, so I came out better off in the long run.***grin***

I also remember reading something about Wilf Carter's death, too. My dad was a real cowboy, at 82, one of the last few true ones from Colorado. He has a lot of respect for Carter. How lucky, for you, Rick, getting to perform with him.
