I have for years been thinking of trying some electric effects on fiddle. Anyone got any advice on any pedals, systems etc which would be worth getting hold of ? Better still, has anyone heard of anything invented along these lines to be used on fiddle ?

Depends what you're playing it thought already...I've had a lot of fun with a digital delay. On mandolin but I'd use it on fiddle too.
Two settings: one "short" which fattens up the sound, or a "long" delay which plays the note again as an echo. I keep the short delaty on all the time, switch to the long to make a nice psychedelic wash on the B part of a minor tune.

Also try a compressor if you think you could use a fatter tone for punching through the noise.

Music's quite a good effect - doesn't work on electric fiddles, though (runs for cover)

It really depends what you are trying to do - you didn't bother to mention that!

Do you want to sound like Ed Alleyne-Johnson, for example?

Ric Sanders of Fairport uses both a distortion pedal (to sound like a cranked-up Les Paul) and a phaser (for swirly ethereal stuff, but way overdone IMHO).

A delay effect plus a small bit of reverb will help the sound of a fiddle out a bunch. Especially for stage work. I play through a Carvin 16 ch mixer board with onboar effects. On one FX ch, I have a medium long delay which I can turn on or off and I keep reverb on all the time.

If you want a fiddle to sound like something other than a fiddle, maybe the best advice is to play something other than a fiddle?

Like it, Get down to a good electric shop with your fiddle and experiment, it is the only way. Mimmicry is a compliment only to those being mimmiced it does nothing for your own self esteem or prowess.

I have a damm expensive dfxXXXX can't remember foot pedal as I had some ideas like this it currently sits under the sideboard gathering dust and I am playing (you'll be pleased to hear Ray) my wooden fiddle more than my electric one!
