Subject: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: Nickhere Date: 02 Oct 06 - 07:09 PM Has anyone tried using software like Final Vinyl / Garage Band etc., to convert old LPs to CD? I know it's more a technology question than music (well, they ARE LPs!) but I have a lot of old LPs that don't seem to be available anywhere on CD, and would be interested to know if anyone has managed to copy to CD while preserving sound quality without all the turntable hum or static hiss etc., |
Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: bobad Date: 02 Oct 06 - 07:24 PM I've had reasonably good success using Nero Wave Editor which is pretty much similar to other wave editing programs such as the freeware program Audacity . There is a lot of useful information available here http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm#record |

Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: Andy Jackson Date: 02 Oct 06 - 07:33 PM After trying a few programmes I fell across this one Polderbits recorder and editor It does just what I want and is easy and free to try and very inexpensive to purchase. I use Soundforge for clever stuff but this is ideal for all the old L.P.s that we all seem to have. I have no connection with Polderbits - or I would have insisted on a less daft name!!! Andy |
Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: Anglo Date: 02 Oct 06 - 09:53 PM Several knowledgable people here have suggested a freeware program called Audacity, available in both PC and Mac versions. I followed their advice and find it very satisfactory. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Oct 06 - 09:28 AM DAK makes a device that does this also. I've posted the link in some of the threads you'll see at the top of the page. http://www.dak.com and look around, there's a link from his front page. Roxio has an small editing program built in its suite of programs, as does Nero, that is for converting the files from LP to CD. SRS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 03 Oct 06 - 09:54 AM The TEAC gf 350 is a turntable/cassette/cd unit that converts directly to cd. no cables, computers, software, etc. I am not an audiophile, but the key is to clean the original vinyl (33, 45 or 78 rpm) really well. I've read that the bass levels are a bit lower on the vinyl conversion than the cassette, cassettes seem to burn to cd with little or no loss of sound quality. and it's available for around $300. delivered. I'm getting one soon, I have hundreds of old folk and international recordings that I don't ever expect to see released on cd commercially, but record them once, listen to them over and over again without more needle damage. BTW the needles for the TEAC are not expensive and are supposed to last for 1000 hours of recording. Anybody out there have experience with this? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Converting LPs to CD From: fumblefingers Date: 04 Oct 06 - 12:32 AM I've converted many LPs to CD using a turntable I bought on the Internet from Garage-A-Records and a pre-amp that fits into an empty computer bay. The pre-amp is an XP201 from XP Sound. They have a website. It comes with software for music restoration, which is quite powerful. You can get rid of clicks, rumple, hum, and most of the other problems associated with old scratchy vinyl disks. Google XP Sound. It costs around USD 100 and is made in Victoria, Aussie. I've had mine several years and it works a treat. |
