There was a recent thread about Steve's UK Tour, but I'm blowed if I can find it via the search facility; anyway, he's appearing tonight - with Cindy - at the Bothy Folksong Club, Southport, Merseyside. I'm looking forward to hearing the definitive " Darcy Farrow"!

Last night, Steve and Cindy ended their UK tour with a performance at the Bothy Folk Song Club, Southport ( 20 miles north of Liverpool, on the Irish Sea coast). Their show had everything:Great melodies, great harmonies, great guitar playing. And their choice of material was terrific. And all this was served up with their great, warm personalities. I was expecting them to be good - but they were more than good! They were sensational! Hurry back please!

We had them at Llantrisant early in their tour, and 4 rock musicians we know decided to give "this folk club thing" a try that night. They were totally knocked out out by Steve & Cindy, to quote: "Sheer Class!"
As were we. To sit close to Steve while he sang Darcy Farrow, a song I thought I'd known for years, was a treat.

I was at the Southport gig last night, and I agree with everything that has been said. I've been trying to remember all the songs/tunes that Steve and Cindy performed - I should take notes!. Here are some highlights ( but then, again, everthing was a highlight!). Cindy sang a great self-composed number about the Copper Family. She also sang one beautiful umaccompanied Appalachian ballad. They sang some great humourous songs by the Berrymans. I love hearing things in Spanish and Steve's setting of the Lorca poem "La Guitarra" was beautiful. Steve's version ( via Bruce Langhorn) of "Corinna" was a masterful example of sublety and a laidback rendering that is only available to a few special artists. Any British/Irish folk club organisers reading this posting do yourself - and your club - a favour and book this wonderful duo next time they visit our shores. I promise you that their appearance will be talked about for years.

I have known Steve since he was a kid (like me !!) playing the folk clubs in SoCal in the late 50's and early 60's. He was GREAT then and became even greater when he and Cindy teamed up after he left SoCal for the North East. I have never seen a finer guitarist and his songwriting abilities have only continued to get better and better. Unfortunately I only get to see them once a year when they come to Kerrville or Houston. Do not miss a chance if they come to your vicinity - you'll be sorry if you do !! One of the first song I ever learned to pick was Darcy Farrow after I saw him do it at Frankenstein's in Laguna Beach in 1959. Never came close to his rendition However !!!

Steve & Cindy have performed here at the Toledo (oregon) Folk Music Club three (3) times in the past six years and they are coming back here next March...They are truly some of the finest folk musicians we have had here.......Their material is excellent, as well as their prpesentation and they truly relate to pepople of all ages.......they are that good....Frank Of Toledo

You never saw Steve Gillette perform in 1959. Steve was all of 17 years old then and hadn't even learned to play guitar yet. As a teenager and then as a student at UCLA, he played banjo and was in a bluegrass band. He took up the guitar after leaving school while working as a copy editor at his hometown newspaper.

I've got a concert tape of him where he writing Darcy Farrow with Tom Campbell in 1966, that Tom sang it for Ian and Sylvia and the rest is history.

It was a great night. I had never heard of them before. What nice people, & Steve is one of the best flat pickers I have seen (I only do finger style myself & can't keep hold of a plectrum). His playing was both subtle & driving, as & when called for. Cindy's voice blends perfectly with Steve's.
We even had a couple come all the way from the Midlands to see them (for the 3rd time).

By the way, we have a mini North American season coming up at the Bothy Folk Club.
With Tom Lewis in a couple of weeks (22nd Oct), Dana & Sue Robinson 5th November & Rattle on the Stovepipe 19th November (British but doing mostly U S material).
Every Sunday for 42 years.

I may be off a year or two but not much. Steve was a regular at Frankenstein's and the Golden Bear and I used to work the door on occasion for the owner, Greek George Nikos. I apologize if I offended your sense of memory -- no need to be sticky about it though. Darcy Farrow was written prior to 1964 because it was copyrighted that year.

I had the happy opportunity to be at the Woods Music & Dance Camp one summer when they were instructors. Songwriting & ballad workshops all week long. If any of you ever have the chance to catch them in a workshop setting, for goodness sake, just do it!

Last weekend, Steve and Cindy appeared on the Liverpool radio station "Radio Merseyside". They were interviewed by Spencer Leigh who is an award-winning writer on popular music. I am providing a link to the program. When Spencer's page appears, click on the words "listen again" ( you'll find these half-way down on the right-hand side of the page). When the new page appears look under the "A-Z of All Shows" section and click on "On the Beat". The radio show should then automatically start. I then clicked on the 5 minute advance button which took me right to the start of the show. There is also an interview with Tony Joe White on the program. Radio Interview

They also did a session with Frank Hennessy for Celtic Heartbeat on BBC Radio Wales to be broadcast some time in the future.
Incidentally, he says he may revive the Dana & Susan Robinson session on Oct 22.
