Subject: Jet - chicken-run video. From: The Shambles Date: 12 Oct 06 - 11:17 AM The following link is to a video of a Harrier Jet nearly taking a soldier's head off. For fun? http://news.sky.com/skynews/video/videoplayer/0,,31200-harrier_0730,00.html |

Subject: RE: Jet - chicken-run video. From: Bert Date: 12 Oct 06 - 02:11 PM Reminds me of a time way back in the Sixties when we were driving along a country road in Essex. When WHOOOSH! just in front of us, three Red Arrows planes crossed the road at just above hedge height and way below tree top height. Scared the pants off us. When we'd recovered somewhat, we thought that perhaps we were lucky that we weren't driving a truck. |

Subject: RE: Jet - chicken-run video. From: Rapparee Date: 12 Oct 06 - 03:34 PM I know of cases (e.g., an Orion sub-hunter) where plane DID take the head off. 'Tain't purty. |

Subject: RE: Jet - chicken-run video. From: Geoff the Duck Date: 12 Oct 06 - 06:52 PM He was standing behind a fence. I doubt that his head was much more than a foot and a half higher than the fence posts. The plane wasn't that close to him. It is low flying, but probably the height it is supposed to buzz the ground for radar avoidance. I was once buzzed by a couple of RAF planes when climbing an Ladder Stile over a Yorkshire Dales wall. I wasn't impressed, but doubt that the plane in the clip was any closer to the soldier than the ones were to me. He (and his video operator) just knew the plane was coming, whaereas I was minding my own business, just out for a hike. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Jet - chicken-run video. From: Grab Date: 13 Oct 06 - 07:22 AM For fun? Probably. Dangerous? Given that the plane was a good 20 feet about him, not in the least, or at least no more so than standing on the pavement by a busy road. ("Sidewalk" for Americans - standing on the "pavement" in the US ain't healthy. :-) Graham. |

Subject: RE: Jet - chicken-run video. From: Rapparee Date: 13 Oct 06 - 09:42 AM Dude was buzzing and "attacking" radar installations when I was in Korea. He climbed up from the "attack" and flamed out -- couldn't restart the engine. So he punched the button and ejected. Came down in a flooded rice paddy and went down into about a century of "night soil" fertilizer. When the rescue chopper came along, well, the blades do have a downdraft. They picked him up in a horsecollar and let him stand OUTSIDE the chopper, on the skid, all the way back to the airbase. There they hovered and winched him to the tarmac where he was hosed off, made to strip naked, bathed, and disinfected. After being checked out by the medics and debriefed by the debriefers, he was dropped off at his quarters. There he found that his buddies had very nicely erected a pup tent outside for him.... |
