About two weeks ago on Stan Carew, CBC Radio one) Stan played a version of House of the rising sun by a country singer of the forties/fifties era but I didn't catch the singers name..can anyone enlighten me as to who it was. It was a very interesting version of the song.

Might have been Clarence "Tom" Ashley singing "Rising Sun Blues." It's played more like a blues in E major, not many chord changes.

This seemed to be an almost pure country version, guy wasn't much of a singer ..but still a good version.

Bob Bauer the producer of the show is online. I've e-mailed him with your request. The CBC DOES have a web-site with info on the program. They might have a playlist. Haven't looked for it yet.

Could have been Bob Dylans version, or even Woody Guthries. Both, as I remember sing played it in a Major key.

Cheers

Bob Bauer answered yesterday but I didn't see it until tonight. Here's his answer:

That was folk singer Woody Guthrie. It's available on several recordings...try this site.... Woody Guthrie

Hope this helps
