Subject: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Saro Date: 31 Oct 06 - 08:03 AM Does anyone have the lyrics to a song called Roland's Oak, by Pete Bond? If you can also give me details of which CD it is on (if any) I'll be doubly grateful! Thanks in anticipation... Saro |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: bfdk Date: 31 Oct 06 - 09:16 AM Roland's Oak is on an old LP I have called "Awkward Age". This LP came out in 1983. Don't know if it's on subsequent recordings as well, or whether Awkward Age is available on CD. Can't find any lyrics for this song online, sorry. Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Raggytash Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:38 PM None of Peter's recordings are not available on CD, nor does he have any plans to get them re-released. This info is correct as per last time I spoke to him about March this year. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Saro Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:57 PM Do you have an email address or phone number for him, at least then I could ring him up and perhaps get the words that way! Saro |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: MoorleyMan Date: 31 Oct 06 - 01:03 PM Good news! Kate Bramley has just recorded it, on her excellent new CD Little Canaan (on Tantobie Records). Sadly, the accompanying booklet doesn't include the lyrics - though I'm sure Kate would be able to help if you asked nicely!! Try www.katebramley.com as a link. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ROLAND'S OAK (Peter Bond) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 31 Oct 06 - 01:37 PM Yes, Kate was asking a while ago if there were any sleeve notes on the LP. Here are the words: Mick ROLAND'S OAK (Peter Bond) In a clearing lived a man of hearts whose only family was a forest Through the threatening peep or the chattering creek the earth spoke There were no children playing round his feet and none to listen to his story And the longing grew strong to leave something to show That he's passed through the world, a reminder to grow So he planted a seed so the forest would know - Roland's Oak. Across a bridge that bears the name of kings the engines shake their drunken rattle And in the names on the side fame and infamy ride through the smoke. And there are streets for generals and boulevards to celebrate the battle. Is it vanity or is it fear of the dark Leads a man to believe he must carve out a mark Like the lovers carve sanity into the bark Of Roland's Oak. Now in that clearing stands a cenotaph, a lifeless monument to madness, And the tree he had sown, the hope he had grown, fell at a stroke. And there the earth is barren, nothing prospers in that sour stream of sadness. Noone said to the woodcutter, "Stop! Let it be, For there's more than just Roland whose hope's in that tree Will the world be a desert before we can see Roland's Oak?" Source: Peter Bond, LP: Awkward Age |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Saro Date: 31 Oct 06 - 01:57 PM Thank you all so much - I heard the song for the first time less than 24 hours ago, and thanks to the magic of Mudcat, now I have the words and a source for the tune. Brilliant. Saro |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Mark Dowding Date: 31 Oct 06 - 07:12 PM Correction for the first two lines: In a clearing lived a man apart whose only family was the forest Through the threatening peak or the chattering creek the earth spoke... Great song - I do it myself on occasion - must do it more often. Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 31 Oct 06 - 07:20 PM Thanks for the corrections Mark. I remember having trouble on the 1st line, which at one time I thought might be man of parts but rejected; it makes a lot more sense now! Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Roland's Oak - Pete Bond From: Mark Dowding Date: 01 Nov 06 - 08:14 AM I asked Pete for the words not long after I heard him sing it and he sent me a copy of his typed lyric sheet. Whilst it's possible that "Awkward Age" may be released at some point on CD as it is Pete who owns the recording, his other two recordings "It's All Right For Some" and "See Me Up See Me Down" were recorded on the Leader and Highway labels respectively. Sadly both of these labels are part of Dave Bulmer's purchases and it's unlikely that they will be re-released if current form is anything to go by. It is possible that Pete could re-record the songs for a CD release if he so desired. I've put my LP recordings onto CD for the car. Cheers Mark |
