The Yungaburra Folk Festival in Far North Queensland has been and gone for another year and I'm finding myself thinking about our old mate John who died two weeks after last year's festival.
His death has been such a sad loss to the folk community, not to mention his dear family and friends.

I miss John - though we never met. I miss his emails - always with treasures of tunes or lyrics enclosed -- he contributed a great deal here and I can't even begin to imagine how much he is missed by his friends in 3D.

He was posting less and less even before his death and I've always thought that was our loss. I've admired his knowledge and his way of sharing it. He has given in relatively few posts more of sound information than others (including me of course) in so many more posts.

John was, simply, a good fellow. Helpful, knowlegable, kind and thoughtful. I traded some PMs with him that helped ME solve some problems. If there is a Mudcat Honor Roll somewhere, I want his name promenently displayed.

I can only echo what others have said. John was one of those folks that just made this a friendly place to be. And he was so knowledgable and sharing about the music. I miss him. God be good to him.

A truly beautiful Aussie song, the title probably referring to "carrying a rolled up blanket and mattress (swag) on your back" - just trying to pre-empt those who'll inevitably quip about banging or other forms of percussive copulation.

I've heard Blackwood who do it very well and it's a beautiful old Irish tune. Anyone have the lyrics please, but in particular does anyone know the name of the original tune? I'm no Andy Rigby but I'd like to play it on my Harp as part of a medley.

John is all over these threads and I can only add that I too enjoyed his postings for there knowledge and the feelings for the subject matter at hand that you could always feel in his posts.

I dunno' Bill....about the "Mudcat Honor Roll" idea.......Every 'Catter who has gone on has been an honored member here. John, Bruce, Mole, Little John, Giac, Walking Eagle, Rick................Ya' know what we do need is a section apart for them somehow........For threads like this.

Unfortunately, being relatively new to this community, I don't believe that I had the pleasure of "meeting" John in Brisbane.

I gather from eading comments on this thread that not having known John in Brisbane was my loss. So I thought that -to a slight degree-I might be able to remedy that by reading some posts that John in Brisbane wrote. Putting John in Brisbane's name in Mudcat's search engine did result in multiple 'hits' from Mudcat's archived threads. However, scanning those threads searching for gems seemed a bit much.

But it occurred to me that a better way of getting a sense of the personality, mind, and spirit of John in Brisbane and the other Mudcatters that catspaw mentioned would be to do as Bill and catspaw had mentioned. Why not create a Mudcat Honor Roll thread? .

It was your idea, Bill D -seconded by catspaw. Why not create a Honor Roll thread for those Mudcatters who have passed on?

In order for those of us who did not have the opportunity of knowing {or knowing them well} those persons'listed on such a thread, it would be great if persons posting to such a thread would include links to posts that you consider to exemplify that person.

Are there reasons why there isn't a thread that would serve as a Mudcat Honor Roll for members who have passed on?

There is a Memorial section in Member Photos and Resources. Also, whenever someone passes on, someone usually posts (somewhere) a link to all of their old posts.

The Memorial section has stuff added..... when someone can add it. It's incredibly painful/difficult/[choose your own term] to work on these things. I have all the pix Giac sent me, for instance, and Jeff agreed I could display some as a memorial to her.... and I just have not been able to bring myself to work on it.

Trying to decide on "what should be done" is not going to happen. What happens, happens in its own time and in its own way. Let that be enough.

I can see that the memorial section needs some updating. I'm sure there are a few we have no pics of....and a couple of folks whose health was in doubt that I'm not sure of their status. (Shula, for example)

They are not forgotten, as this thread proves. Susan may have it right...let memories and occasions do what they will, and keep the memorial section as current as possible.

Certainly we have had no lack of memory-sharing in the threads.... it just happens as people are moved to do it. Each person we've lost is different, and each sharing has been done in a way that befits the individuals and the closest friends they made here.

Some people prefer a quiet passing, too. Others would be distressed to have certain favorite friends overlooked. Thinking of the many complicated sensitivities involved in trying to impose a systematic approach, the mind boggles.

Odd how these things seem to come in waves. I was just thinking of starting a thread, this morning, honouring Giac/Mary Giacomini and others who have left us, including John, Rick, Walking Eagle, Little John Cameron, etc.

In Mary's case, I promised her my grandson would always know who she was and never forget her by getting his "potata hole" a little game which she'd told me about. It's that ticklish region at the back of the neck, kind of like "stealing your sugar." Everytime I play it with him, he lets out peals of laughter and I know, somehow, Mary is listening and has a great big smile on her face. (scroll down to the second picture)

I am sure when things get better for Jeff and/or Max has more time, we'll see an update to the Memorial page.

We met John at the National just before his death. Such a gentle sweet man. Sadly we didn't get the chance to get to know him. The song he asked Hildebrand to sing will always remind me of him.

John added tunes for hundreds of Australian songs to Mudcat, and gave technical advice in threads such as You Nominate Songs For On-Line Sheet Music . He experimented with systems to find ways of converting PDF Sheet Music to get more traditional music on line.

This thread, Tune Req: Iranian/Persian Folk Music shows his wider interest in all sorts of music.

John was also a very practical person, as evidenced here.. Buy a guitar case for your banjo..
