Subject: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 21 Nov 06 - 06:28 AM Otley Folk Club present an extra concert on Fri Dec 8th Note, their usual night is a Wednesday - and there still is a 'normal' folk club night that week. But they present another of their occasional 'specials' on Fri 8th Dec in Korks, on Bondgate... The (electric) Duncan McFarlane Band will run through up to three hours of their brand of 'folk-rock' that night. The 'full and proper' line up this time! Doors open 8pm. Everyone welcome! Cheers! - Duncan |

Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: Fliss Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:42 PM Saw Roy Wood in the Co-op in outskirts of Shrewsbury years ago -- in the q in front of me. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: BusyBee Paul Date: 23 Nov 06 - 02:58 AM Hey Fliss, nearest I can get to that is escorting Vin Garbutt around our local Tesco when he was here a few years ago for our Folk Festival - surreal! |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: BusyBee Paul Date: 23 Nov 06 - 02:59 AM Sorry about the thread creep - get along to Otley people and have a wonderful time. The DMcF Band are the tops IMHO. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: Les in Chorlton Date: 23 Nov 06 - 03:29 AM Is this a ticket event? Do we need to buy tickets in advance? |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 23 Nov 06 - 10:50 AM Hi Les No not a ticket event - pay on the door - tho it usually does fill up early - be there for doors open, should be no prob. If you're a deffo, I can organise 'reserve ticket(s)' on the door in yer name. B&B - there's plenty in the town - PM me your requirements (numbers, nights etc) and I'll see what I can unearth for ya (or find some other arrangement depending on numbers! Hah! Cheers - Duncan |

Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GUEST Date: 29 Nov 06 - 03:08 PM ASBOs? Sorry to bang on but which drummer are you referring to Mr D? Your band gets through more drummers than Spinal Tap methinks! |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 30 Nov 06 - 06:11 AM Good point - tho' a tad tongue in cheek I guess! We have a permanent drummer (in the seat since we formed properly in 2001?) - Nick Pepper - damned fine player he is too - and a good mate! Yep, he is sometimes unavailable - and we do have a few mates that dep for him when required (Dave Budd, Bernie Gilmore...) - and we have had a few young lads (still of school age!) play at certain gigs - to encourage 'em onward!!! (Laurie, Chris....) So I'll take the Spinal Tap reference on the chin in good part... bless! It was, after all, me who first suggested (on here) that there was a doubt. Rest assured, as the gig being recorded, we have the 'proper' drummer, Nick, on board. Hugs - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Dec 06 - 02:52 AM Fri 8th Dec in Korks, on Bondgate... Korks then ....... Corks not in bottles for long - drink to be drunk! It's a largish room - tables, chairs, bar, wee stage (we six fit on) at the back of a wine bar/restuarant - but seperate from that part of it all. Only for the young! No - too old for that - but I do act a bit lively y'kna No drugs compulsory - Black Sheep and poss other hand-pulled ale there No cig lighters needed - done thing now is to use yer mobile phone display (lit up) to wave slowly above head on the grandiose numbers played - stadium rock got digital! Any more Q's answered gladly - cheers - D |

Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:21 AM This is getting like Gardeners' Question Time! >>sure that the mobile phone display is the only thing lit up - you're not expecting any Russians are you Dunc?<< all nationalities welcome, my friend >>So, no E or even D but maybe some Po 210?<< Plenty of E and D - they're the keys that suit my voice! Lots of A and G as well though! (damned melodeons make me struggle in other places too!) >>Duncan, will you be wearing that fantastic kilt on Friday?<< Hmmm, doubt it. Want to look 'cool' (hah!) as an all-time 'hero' may be in attendance. Need to put on my best front! The kilt 'episode' was a one-off! Cheers - Duncan |

The time I did play for her she actually stayed inside the Civic Centre (Leeds) and emerged a little *after* we'd done our spot out in Millenium Square - sensible lass (some say!) Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GUEST,Mollycat Date: 06 Dec 06 - 10:17 AM << sorry I'll not be able to make it - going to see Roy Wood of "Wizzard" fame that night!>> BusyBee Paul - I thought that you were one of the loyal band of followers. Roy Wood indeed, when you can see Duncan & the boys - It could be said that Geoff looks a bit like Roy Wood especially when wearing the strange hat he wore at last Christmas' extravaganza! |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: BusyBee Paul Date: 07 Dec 06 - 03:11 AM Hi Mollycat - yep - mea culpa - I should have checked the website diary before committing myself to the Roy Wood do (or should that be "being committed?). You are right about Geoff though, he did look very fetching in that hat, in fact the whole band looked like Santa's little helpers!. I hope Dunc has more voice this year - let's face it, he couldn't have less than he did last December!. That said, it was still a cracking night and I'm really sorry to miss this one. So, Merry Christmas to you all and I'll see you sometime in the New Year. I'll be thinking of you on Friday!. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 07 Dec 06 - 06:25 AM Important update! I got the pricing wrong. Steve admonished me last night for saying it was £5 'in' - it's not! - they're only charging (as it's a 'home gig') a mere £3 - three quid? ........Yep Three! - bargain! Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GerryMc Date: 07 Dec 06 - 06:38 AM well worth three quid in my book. Hopefully I shall be able to break into the piggy bank. :-) Gerry :-) |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 07 Dec 06 - 05:38 PM Hi Gerry - that good lady o yours coming too? Seeing as we're recording the gig (fab rod Holt and all his gear) it might be handy id your Ani brought her camera gear - Her pro-standard shots might be well worth a go on the CD cover! Now there's an idea! - hugs to you both - Duncan |

Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: BusyBee Paul Date: 09 Dec 06 - 08:11 AM Glad it went well Dunc. Roy Wood was a good night but I suspect I'd have had better value for money at your gig! Oh well, roll on next year and more DMcF Band gigs. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Dec 06 - 09:14 AM Wot a fantastic gig - big thanx to Dunc and all the band and everyone there for a great atmosphere. Glad ye met yer "hero" too D. Roll on the next D McF gig (Thurs, the Star, Roberttown).. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: Les in Chorlton Date: 09 Dec 06 - 11:43 AM This band are brilliant. Duncan sings and plays like a man inspired. He has a touch of Groucho Marx and he conducts the others with his eyes. Melody, harmony and excitment are provided by Geoff, on guitar, Anne on fiddle and Steve on melodeon. Nick on Drums, Tony on bass put that extra something that makes Folk Rock a major contributor to the strange collection that is English folk music. The band put fire and passion into everything they do and fine, powerful melody is one feature that makes them exceptional. Although they use amps and such like, nothing gets between them and the audience and that is why they remain so close to the living tradition of musicians and audience being part fo the same experience. Best night of Folk Rock I have been to ever. Probably the best night of live music.Saw the Boat Band recently and an accoustic night of a fiddle, a melodeon and a guitar hit me in the same way! What the DMcFB and the BB have in common is a depth of experience of traditional music and quality of group playing that, in each band, generates beautiful and genuinely exciting music. Misic never gets better than in small rooms at the back of pubs and that is why folk clubs contribute so much to the musical life of this country. Ok I will stop now. If you get the chance, go and see them. They, and not the BBC Awards, represent the best in live music. |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GerryMc Date: 09 Dec 06 - 12:12 PM pics are great Dunx. Will get them edited ASAP. Good one of Liam, Me, you and The Man. Thanks for a great night. Gerry :-) |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GUEST,wayne Date: 09 Dec 06 - 12:17 PM I couldn't go because I'm bloody ill! I'll have to console myself with a memento cd (if I'm spared!) |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: GUEST,Kelk Brigade Date: 09 Dec 06 - 02:59 PM Great Night Dunc, Hope the cd turns out well, loved the "mini" Les Paul, went and bought one today. Only wish I could play it as well as you guys. See ya soon |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 09 Dec 06 - 07:07 PM >>Mini Les Paul<< - I wonder if I ought to clain some sort of royalty/agents fee (whatever)? Yep - amazing how good they are - and a snip at £49 rrp!!! I actually was playing it through a very tiny Roland Microcube (also hardly any money!) - the wee 4 inch speaker miked up through the PA and I had it back through the monitor system so I could hear it! Absolutely amazing to get a sound like that with what's essentially 'childs' toy-for-Xmas' gear! The band have forbidden me to wield it again tho! (and I only used it on the encore - bloomin cheek!) - they spent all the rest of the night chiming 'When I'm cleaning windows' at me! Back to the trusty Oakwood acoustics then! Hah! Hugs - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Duncan McFarlane Band 'special' From: HipflaskAndy Date: 10 Dec 06 - 03:45 PM Email me Wayne - I'll give you a match report! - Hope you're well soon. all the best Thanks for the 'raps' Moorley and Les - our pleasure - honest!
