Subject: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Nov 06 - 05:46 AM Or know where we can get one reasonably priced? Preferrably Kuban Cossack but I am sure a Don Cossack one could be modified (I think). Not for me btw - Son #2's wedding. He is entitled to wear one and quite fancies doing so. Not sure if he can take the sword and bullets into the ceremony though:-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: The Walrus Date: 28 Nov 06 - 06:20 AM Dave, If you only need one for the wedding, try Berman & Angel (a merger of the old Berman's & Maurice Angel's) the theatrical costumiers - although, it helps to know exactly what you are after. As far as I recall, their main offices are in London, but I believe they have several regional offices around the country. I'm assuming that you are after the traditional ceremonial cossack dress. For the Shashka and kinjal*, you may have to hire from someone like Bapty's (primarily theatrical/film firearms hire, but I believe they hire all manner of weaponry) - failing that Manton firearms or Worldwide Arms (can't remember which) used to carry Soviet era military shaskas (black painted steel scabbards with fittings to carry a bayonet) and, I believe, some of the daggers (not matching), unfortunately, I haven't seen their catalogues for a number of years. Not much help I'm afraid. Walrus *I think those are the names for the cossack sabre without a knuckle bow and the long dagger. |

From: Blowzabella Date: 28 Nov 06 - 10:12 AM Angels website - I've used them through work many times - they are very good, but only based in London - no regionals as far as I'm aware http://www.angels.uk.com/ for weapons.... Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: mack/misophist Date: 28 Nov 06 - 11:02 AM Each Host had its own distinctive uniform of either grey-brown , blue or green with red, crimson, yellow or light blue facings. Cossacks were expected to provide their own uniforms. While these were sometimes manufactured in bulk by factories owned by the individual Host, garments were often handed down or cut out within a family. Individual items might accordingly vary from those laid down by regulation or be of obsolete pattern. The Caucasian Hosts (Kuban and Terek) wore the very long, open fronted, cherkesska coats with ornamental cartridge loops and coloured beshmets (waistcoats), that epitomise the popular image of the Cossacks. Most Hosts wore fleece hats with coloured cloth tops in full dress with peaked caps for ordinary duties. The two Caucasian Hosts however appear to have worn high fleece caps on most occasions. copied from Wikipedia |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 28 Nov 06 - 11:50 AM Was he granted the right to wear the uniform? Or did he inherit it? Are you a cossack too? No help, I know, but you've got us interested. |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Nov 06 - 12:15 PM Inherited apparantly - The right to 'Cossackdom' is passed down the male line. Grandad was a Cossack so therefore was Dad, so am I and so on. Grandad also became a Russian Orthodox priest when he came to England - So he was a Cossack in a cassock:-) Did you ever see the 'Likely Lads' sketch, Kevin? What's them things you kneel on in Church? A Cossack? No, that's one of them Russian blokes that rides round on a horse. I thought that was a Cassock? No, the priest wears one of them. I thought that was a hassock? :D (tG) |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: Kevin Sheils Date: 28 Nov 06 - 12:17 PM Ah! At the misty back of my mind that old Likely Lads sketch may have been lurking without my knowledge. Surplice to requirements here though |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: The Walrus Date: 28 Nov 06 - 06:58 PM Dave, I used to know a charachter, of 'Cossack' stock. Apparently; His Great Grandfather had been a Cossack for the Tsar; His Grandfather had ridden as a Cossack with the Red Army in the Civil War; and His father ended riding as in the 'black' cossack (for the Germans) in WWII (and 'became Polish' in captivity - managing to avoid being sent back to Uncle Joe). That's the story he told, anyway. W |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: Fliss Date: 28 Nov 06 - 07:35 PM Hiya My better half suggests you contact the 1914-21 Society. They reenact Russian Revolution. http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/20th_century_warfare/id22.htm Love the beard in the front row - very George V or the Tzar. He does Kaban Cossack. We own the gun in the picture now... but do Home Guard and Land Army as would be too old to be in active service. Hope this is helpful. cheers fliss |

Subject: RE: Anyone got a Cossack uniform? From: The Walrus Date: 29 Nov 06 - 05:11 AM Fliss, "...but do Home Guard and Land Army as would be too old to be in active service..." Which group are you with? I know of a Home Guard group in Chatham, but there was also a group re-enacting WW2 'civilian services' (WVS,Land Army, Police etc.) that used to be seen around the shows some years ago. Regards Walrus |
