Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: pdq Date: 03 Dec 06 - 03:10 PM This is the third statement on autism I have heard this week. One talk show guest stated that 1 in every 160 Americans is autistic. On a news show, a university president said that autism keeps people from full access to higher education. One does not need to have one's ear on the track to hear the train coming. This will be the new cause célèbre for the civil rights industry. Remember, you heard it here first. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Peace Date: 03 Dec 06 - 03:35 PM "Welcome to the Autism Society of America, the voice of the autism community. Whether you are an individual with autism, a parent, family member or friend, professional or other interested advocate, consider joining ASA! Your involvement and financial contribution helps ASA get autism information into the hands of those who need it most and supports our efforts to promote education, awareness, and advocacy on critical issues. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Education and other governmental agencies, autism is growing at a startling rate of 10-17 percent per year. At this rate, ASA estimates that the prevalence of autism could reach 4 million Americans in the next decade." |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 10:22 AM Yep.....A great story. Peace sent me a heads up on this one and I appreciate it. Autism is such a strange thing but bringing it out into the public eye has brought more and more to the table. We used to think autism meant no emotions and no ability to love or function in a group.....living in their own little world. Not true. Do yourselves a favor and read up on this because it is an area where strides have been made and what is being found out translates over into other forms of mental illness. And pdq....Autism is far from being an excuse for a behavior as you seem to imply. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Wesley S Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:20 AM My son Brendan will turn 6 on the 13th of this month. He's dealing with autism - and I can assure there are a wide variety of symptoms. He does like a lot of physical contact – and he seeks it out. But that's not considered typical. Mostly he's non-verbal. Doesn't speak a word. And that slows down his educational process a lot as you can imagine. Yet before he went silent he had a vocabulary of close to 20 words – though some of them weren't perfect. It's growing problem that mostly affects boys. The numbers I heard were that around one out of 177 kids born currently will be somewhere on the autism spectrum. And some people need to figure it out. Daycare centers for one. The other day I was picking Brendan up from his first day at the new daycare center. They had him for about two and a half hours after he gets out of school. The lady at the daycare met me with our check for the week in her hand. She gave it back to me and said that they weren't going to be able to "handle" him because he would get up and run out of the room. For freakin sake – he's five years old and it's his first day in a new school AND a new daycare. He's testing his boundaries!! It was all I could do not to rip her a new one. Oh well – rant over. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:44 AM My son falls somewhere in the spectrum. He holds the school record for basketball free throws in a minute and was just advanced a year ahead in math. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Dec 06 - 09:41 AM This morning there was a long story on science and research funding (how bills from the House and the Senate don't agree on Autism funding) on Morning Edition. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Wesley S Date: 05 Dec 06 - 10:35 AM Local congressman Joe Barton has been holding up one research bill in his committee. Sadly - he was re-elected. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: SINSULL Date: 05 Dec 06 - 11:12 AM Could it be that they know exactly what is causing the rise in autism and simply don't want to waste unnecessary funds. SINS, in paranoid mode and bitter about her Grand Nieces Autism. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Wesley S Date: 05 Dec 06 - 11:15 AM It will be a lot cheaper to fix the problem in the long run. WE know that. It's a shame we can't convince the folks in power. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Hawker Date: 05 Dec 06 - 11:44 AM Wonderful story. I think everyone should read up on autism Spectrum Disorders, they are wide and varied, and the special human beings that are found to be within this spectrum would greatly benefit if more people understood where they were coming from. It is amazing how suddenly there seems to be more and more people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Is it something we don't know about or is it that more people are recognising the disorder? Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Morticia Date: 06 Dec 06 - 12:37 PM Mercury = autism. Say no to vaccines. Utter and dangerous bollocks, nameless one. I think the awareness of autism and diagnostic abilities of GP, Ed Psychs and others has grown with it....which is fantastic. I remember as a fairly newish social worker having to explain some aspects of Aspergers to a psychologist for people with learning disability. I don't miss those days one bit. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 Dec 06 - 04:49 PM Wesley S - The "reluctance" to fund education programs can come from many reasons. In my state, a State Supreme Court decision found the schools "underfunded" according to the requirements of the State Constitution. One Senate committee chairman essentially blocked meaningful consideration of increased school funding for three years, (IMO) solely so that a bunch of "pork barrel projects" could be funded first. He, and those cooperating, were reasonably sure that more money for schools would pass, because it was needed, but the other projects that required frivolous (and some fairly large) tax increases might not have had a good chance shortly after a tax adjustment for the schools - so they had to get the money for their friends first. Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Donuel Date: 06 Dec 06 - 05:01 PM Mericinol- the brandname/codeword for the mercury preservative in medicines and vaccines does damage nervous systems. The drug manufactures are now protected from paying any damages that exceed an average lower middle calss yearly income. Congressman Army made sure of that. He stuck in an ammendment at 3AM Sunday morning into another bill that was sure to pass. Now that everyone's butt is covered - JUST TODAY Congress passed the Autrism Bill that will give millions to research and help for the millions of victims. 1 in every 104 boys will have autism at this time. Girls are only 1/4 of the total autism population. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Wesley S Date: 06 Dec 06 - 05:26 PM I've heard that the numbers are more like one out of every 166. |

Subject: RE: BS: Austitic basketball player wins out From: Grab Date: 06 Dec 06 - 07:11 PM Autism, Mercury Link Disputed, Doctors Say No Connection Found A major problem with the mercury idea was that different countries had different uptake of vaccines at different times. If the two were connected, the autism stats would have responded accordingly. But the numbers simply don't show that. The sooner people stop wasting time *and* money lynching the nearest suspect and get with real work, the better. If all the money spent on "anti-vaccine" books and on publicity for their authors had been donated to research efforts instead, things would be a bit forrarder. :-( Graham. |
