Another odd thing was the upright bass the KT bass player was using. I hadn't seen it before. It was a full 3/4 bass in length and upper bout - but the lower bout was trimmed very neatly to about 1/3 its size. So the body was short. It had a good pick-up and great sound (sounded full sized). He told me he could travel more easily with it, check it below on the aircraft, not have to buy the bass a seat.

I've seen a lot the travelling players use the electric upright - folding, bodyless instruments - which sound OK, play like a real one but just don;t have all the beauty of the real thing -so this was a bgreat compromise.

I saw some of the PBS show. I'd like to have seen th whole thing. I think they did a really fine job with the film. I played with KT in Lakes Charles LA just a month or so ago. Great guys, great performances. It was nice to hear all the old stuff done jst as well as it ever was. The Crowd loved 'em too.

The have odder perks in the contract rider then most ... the green room had piles of burgers and apple pies from MacDonalds per KT contract! I don't usually eat before I do a show, and I was on late so I wouldn't have had dinner, if KT hadn't ordered the burgers. Even a cold quarter pounder tastes preety good, when you're hungry!

There are some great clips of The Kingston Trio on Youtube. One clip shows them on the Jack Benny Show. Benny greets the trio and then asks, " Which one of you is Tom Dooley?". Well, it made me laugh!

No-one's mentioned that there is a connection between the KT and the Monkees: John Stewart wrote and recorded "Daydream Believer" which was a Monkees hit (n'est-ce pas?)

I have a number of old John Stewart solo cds. Great stuff. I beleive he was also in the Cumberland Three who did a great album "Songs of The Civil War. Is any of this stuff available on cd?

Frog prince -- it is good to know a) that I really did hear that wonderful song Tom Dooley when I was about nine, and b) that there are those on the Mudcat older than me (besides Kendall!!!! - love you Kendall, you know I do).

Oh, and one thing that really surprised me...

It seems there was a tv sitcom that starred the KT, called "Young Men In A Hurry." The KT didn't really like the hours that were required and the idea died.

Kind of a "Monkees" in striped shirts.

49 years ago it would have been Shane, Reynolds, and Guard; and I was 16, going on 17.

I saw it fairly recently and thought it was great. I didn't know the history of the trio at all so all the info was fascinating but I DO remember hearing Tom Dooley played at a birthday party when I was about 9 (yeah, this 48 years ago......) -- could that have been them THAT far back.......?

Just got through watching a show on the Kingston Trio on the local PBS station. Don't know if its been broadcast before, but it sure was the first time it caught my eye.

Great history on the Trio and their work. Talks almost exclusively about Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, Dave Guard and John Stewart, although at the very end the show mentions some others who have performed as the Trio. Interviews with Nick, Bob and John, as well as their main biographer and some other musicians who talk about the influence of the Trio on modern music.

Not having much background on the Trio, this was a really fun show for me to watch. I truly love the trio's music and it was great to actually put some names and visualizations with the voices that I am so used to hearing.

Thought some others might want to keep an eye on their PBS station if there are some other KT fans out there.
