Subject: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Rapparee Date: 18 Dec 06 - 03:13 PM A crisis looms! A shortage of ceremonial kilts could leave thousands of soldiers without a stitch of plaid to wear as they parade to the skirl of the bagpipes. Military officials said Monday that more than 5,000 Scottish soldiers are having to share their kilts because defense chiefs have not finalized a contract to buy enough of the garments to go around. The men, who face regular tours of duty in south Iraq and Afghanistan, have just 320 kilts, or one for every 15 soldiers. Sharing their kilts! A scandal!! See the entire AP story here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Peace Date: 18 Dec 06 - 03:19 PM That may have more import than some can imagine. When Canada's forces became 'one', the Black Watch was informed they'd have to give up their kilts as part of the process to homogenize Canadian troops. Their response was words to the effect, "And who will you be sending to take them from us?" They still have their kilts. FYI. |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Bert Date: 18 Dec 06 - 04:21 PM Nice one Peace. One of those stories that you really hope is true. |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Teribus Date: 18 Dec 06 - 04:26 PM Sorry forgot to mention - thanks for the link supplied by Rapaire, the minute I read his post I thought that it would have something to do with the recent merger and creation of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. A typical, Government/MOD procurement cock-up. |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Emma B Date: 18 Dec 06 - 05:50 PM this may be the answer - courtesy of Scoville |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 Dec 06 - 06:01 PM Gees... it's bad enough they don't have enough body armour to go round, but not enough kilts?!! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: artbrooks Date: 18 Dec 06 - 06:07 PM Maybe, in the interest of conservation of scarce material, they should consider plaid thongs? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: mack/misophist Date: 18 Dec 06 - 06:57 PM The real question is the practical one. How do 15 men share ONE kilt? Especially at the same time. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Peace Date: 18 Dec 06 - 07:13 PM Well, each kilt takes 9 yards of cloth. OK, OK, don't rush me. Nine divided by fifteen is, uh, I'll be back later. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: artbrooks Date: 18 Dec 06 - 07:17 PM Well, lets see...kilt material is 60 inches wide...9/15 of a full length is 21 inches...turn it sideways...how about a short tartan lava-lava? |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 18 Dec 06 - 07:22 PM Misleading, I thought the black watch and the Gordon Highlanders were going to parade in micro minis and the Military Tatoo from edinburgh castle would have 'tossing the todger' and 'spot the cheeky tattoo' competitions. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Emma B Date: 18 Dec 06 - 07:41 PM minimalism? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Rapparee Date: 18 Dec 06 - 08:55 PM Well, apparently (from the news leads under the picture Emma B. supplied) the MoD is denying that there is a kilt shortage. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Dec 06 - 03:00 AM Just like they denied the shortage of luxuries like body armour, weapons and ammunition..... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Flash Company Date: 19 Dec 06 - 01:09 PM If the MOD denies that there is a problem, There's a problem! FC |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Dec 06 - 01:42 PM If they were wearing Emma's discovery I don't think they'd be in a hurry to turn their backs on the foe... |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Rapparee Date: 19 Dec 06 - 03:54 PM Hundreds, thousands, of Scottish troops marching across the snowy hills of Afghanistan, flinging themselves at the enemy, clad only from the waist up.... The mental picture is, to say the least, interesting. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Dec 06 - 05:30 PM McGrath.... I'm not sure I really want to know the answer, but ... Where do you find things like that?! LTS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Dec 06 - 07:52 PM Better ask Emma, Liz - she was the one who found it. ............................ Rapaire - you should see a film called "Carry on Up the Khyber", where something like that was a key plot element - see here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:03 PM Ah.. the Devils in Skirts!! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: gnu Date: 20 Dec 06 - 04:53 AM Yes, McGrath. I recall laughing wildly at that particulat scene from "Carry on Up the Khyber". |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Scots Regiment Short Kilts! From: Rapparee Date: 20 Dec 06 - 09:32 AM I don't think we got that "Carry On" movie here. I don't remember getting many of them here. |
