Subject: OK, so I need help on this tune.

Once again, at our post-morris sing, I dug out a tune about St. Patrick. The first verse is as follows:

You heard of St Dennis of France, who never was much for Braggin.. You heard of St George and his lance, who killed the hedonish dragon. The Sense that the Welshman and Scot are a couple of plentiful pipers may just as well go to posh, when compared to the patron of vipers. St Patrick of Ireland, my dear.

The second verse goes on: ...Bring me a flagon to drink, to wash down the molodroths brust-ye??

A singer at Pinewoods taught the song to me, and he had no idea what the words were here, or if indeed molodroths do indeed burst-ye. Anybody know this song, and know the phrase hat I'm looking for? I'm tired of struggling red-faced through this phrase.

Thanks

You know, I've listened to that song on a tape for years, and never really worried about those words. I'm pretty sure the first word is "mollygrubs" and I think the second is "burstin'" which I assume is Irish for "fuzzy mouth" or "dry" or some such.
Blessings,
Barbara
PS, you get more answers faster if you put the name of the song in the Header, like "Heard of St. Patrick". Welcome to Mudcat!

And I thought it was a "heathenish" dragon...

Thanks for the reply. I won't feel so bad with my mumblings, knowing that I was at least close. Yeah, I suppose that the dragon started heathenish, but has rapidly declined with the onset of age (my own) and the slurring that accompanies the increasing amount of liquor involved for me to sing an entire song that has no chorus.

You have this on tape? May I inquire the name of the song, or the singer, or anything that you may happen to know of the piece. I've heard it only once, on an old Thistle and Shamrock program, but I was fortunate enough to find someone at Pinewoods that could sing (almost) all of the words into my tape recorder--he too was stumped on the "Mollygrubs" phrase.

P.S. Thanks for the suggestion on the subject line, It helps this nervious newbee to feel more at ease.

Alas, I am caught out. It came from one of those illicit tapes that so make Gordon Bok froth. He sang it. He hates hand held tape recorders; bans them from his performances...and yet, someone unnamed made a tape of him live, and this song was there. I don't believe he's found the internet yet, so we are safe for a bit...
I believe you can write him at Timberhead Music and ask for the words, and I seem to recall they were in the Forum at one point, but I can't get Forum Search to boot right now. If you want to try, Bob, put a key word or two in the body copy box. I picked "gammon" so as to not get all the St.Pat songs, or all the Puff the Magic...threads.
Blessings,
Barbara
