Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 19 Jan 07 - 01:17 PM My friend an hour away has TONS AND TONS AND TONS of snow coming down today. We're up to .0000000002 cm here. Gimme some weather!!!!! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 19 Jan 07 - 01:24 PM Raining here, and the lake, which has been frozen over for all of four days since last spring, already has big holes in it. Silver lining: the outdoor woodpile (what wouldn't fit in the shed) thawed enough for me to bring a big load in. Cat's mad at me again, as he blames me for the weather. My connection's down to 40 thou. (from 45 on a good day), and will get more unstable as everything gets wetter and windier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 19 Jan 07 - 01:44 PM black walnut...Weather? Pretty white in Goderich right now, snowing hard and blowing lke crazy. Hope it doesn't screw up my Saturday gig. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Beer Date: 19 Jan 07 - 02:16 PM It's about -1C here in the South Western part of Quebec. Snow is just right for snowmen. Guess that is what I'll be doing when I pick up my grandson from school. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 19 Jan 07 - 02:23 PM Mooh! I was so jealous to hear that you were getting more snowsqualls in Goderich today! It's so BORING here in the big city. Even the icicles are melting in disgust. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Jan 07 - 04:00 PM It looks like the first evening in "Groundhog Day" here. Wind and blowing snow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 19 Jan 07 - 05:29 PM black walnut...Shoulda seen the dogs standing against the squalls, covered in snow, savouring every wild moment. There must be much instinct in a dog to make them like that kind of return to nature. I hear Port Albert got nailed this morning... Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Jan 07 - 05:43 PM Is "Port Albert" a dachshund? ;-) My point being, our dachshunds do NOT relish that romantic return to the squalls of nature! They do not savour the moment. No sir. It gets harder and harder to get those little weiners to go outside at all after the snow starts falling. They'd rather just use the rug or one of the legs on the dining room table. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: number 6 Date: 19 Jan 07 - 06:21 PM Our 2 Greys hate the cold .... Wednesday nite when it was -30c it took me 1/2 hr to coax the female Heidi down the stairs to go out, then another 15 minutes putting on 2 layers of coats on them each .... poor things, but jezuuuuz you can't let them think it's indoor plumbing when it's cold out. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 19 Jan 07 - 07:39 PM Rosie has a little coyote with the springer and collie in her and she gets very(!) foxy in the bush. She likes to taste the bad weather until she's well and truly cold, longer if I'm out with her. Cosmo is a Lab/corgi and doesn't tolerate as much cold but still insists on going out in it, he's very brave as a rule. Winter has arrived but it's a little weak compared to what we have had. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: bobad Date: 19 Jan 07 - 08:03 PM Mooh, a lab-corgi mix? I find it difficult to picture the mechanics involved in producing this mix. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 19 Jan 07 - 09:37 PM bobad...Yeah well, Cosmo is an odd one. Father was a Lab, mother a corgi, both pretty pure looking though not certified or whatever being farm dogs. The Corgi mother had nine largish pups (by C-section) competing for her milk, and her tits literally dragged on the ground. By the time we adopted him, he was ready to take on the world but met his match with Rosie who mothered him terribly, being a most gentle dog. We watched as Rosie literally showed Cosmo around the yard, taught him tug-of-war, grooming, fetch tricks, swimming hazards, and other mysteries of dogdom. He's got a kind of Lab body with short powerful legs, big bat ears, a HUGE tongue, big wet nose, heavy tail, thick neck, and a monster curiosity. Loves to burrow, dig, and swim, he's affectionate, and we think he's smart though the Lab silliness in him sometimes fools us. Eats like a cow. I know the description sounds grotesque, but he comes off looking cute. Both dogs and the cat are black and white, more or less in the same places, and make quite a herd when they run around the house. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 19 Jan 07 - 10:14 PM You guys make me miss my dog more'n usual. Sounds like a fine herd o' pets there. As for the weather, I ain't blown away yet, power's still on, dialup at 37 thou, but the night's not over. They've been showing some of the devastation in Britain on the teevee, hope all the UK Catters are fine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: number 6 Date: 19 Jan 07 - 10:42 PM Pissed rain, with high winds all day today ... temperature has dropped and now it's snowing. I'll gladly send some your way BW. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Ebbie Date: 19 Jan 07 - 10:58 PM Our weather is supposedly moderating - but it's still snowing. It is not-quite-freezing at the moment. My Cairn terrier loves the snow. She rolls in it, buries balls in it, tunnels in it. By the time she is finished she looks like a fullblown dandelion. Her coat is champagne, rather than tawny and she's not always easy to spot. At a distance she looks like a cloud squall at ground level. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: JennieG Date: 19 Jan 07 - 11:28 PM Lovely description Ebbie! When you all get tired of the snow and ice perhaps you could send some our way, it's very hot today and is going to be even more of a stinker tomorrow - over 100 of your degrees. Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 19 Jan 07 - 11:40 PM I sincerely hope you mean the Farenheit sort of degrees. 100 of our degrees would have you bilin' like a lobster supper. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: JennieG Date: 19 Jan 07 - 11:45 PM I do mean Farenheit degrees. This heat scrambles my brain and I am about as useful as a lettuce leaf that has been out of the fridge for far too long. It's mid-30s C here now, with a high humidity, and it's not nice. But come September....there is an increasingly high chance that this little Aussie catter (plus spouse, Himself) will be hitting Ontario!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!!! Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 20 Jan 07 - 07:08 AM Environment Canada says heavy flurries and high of -4C, which looks about right at the moment as it's blowin' like crazy. Dog'n'Dog still wanna play outside. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 20 Jan 07 - 09:13 AM The wind here is howlin and swirlin like a dog chasin it's tail... don't matter which way ya throw the snow, it comes right back in yer face. Wake ya up though!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: *daylia* Date: 20 Jan 07 - 09:21 AM Yup it does. Good to be alive, it looks so pretty out there today! Comforting to see the snow at last -- life feels normal, at least. Now, c'mon shovel, lets get at 'er! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 20 Jan 07 - 11:14 AM The only benefit I'm getting out of this barametric yo-yo is a flurry of migraines. Not enough white stuff to cover the plum pudding heurcheras! biLL: Do you have a truck? C'mon down! Mooh: Will you teach me guitar when I move to Goderich? DADGAD? We have a real estate lady already on the hunt. Little Hawk: Port Albert is a GREAT name for a weiner dog! Mine was called Herman. On snowy days we would roll him up in a piece of carpet with his nose sticking out of one end and his tail out the other....then put him on the sled and take him around the neighbourhood. He loved it, and it was a great conversation starter. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Jan 07 - 11:27 AM Yeah, I think it's a perfect name for a wiener dog too. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: GUEST,meself Date: 20 Jan 07 - 11:32 AM Hey, you boys take it easy with those snow shovels, eh? You ain't as young as you used to be, and you been spending a lotta time sitting in front of your computers like so many bumps on so many logs ... |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: GUEST,meself Date: 20 Jan 07 - 11:46 AM Hey - whacha being so damn sarcastic about? Jeesh ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 20 Jan 07 - 01:11 PM I did shovel, for about twenty minutes, so the doors would be operable. Especially the door to my garage, wherein I have a 13HP, 33" cut snowblower, fully gassed, all winter long. I can throw enough snow into the wind in a two foot distance to come back in my face for an easy ten seconds. Like I said... that'll wake ya up! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 20 Jan 07 - 04:12 PM black walnut...Sure thing! Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 20 Jan 07 - 05:17 PM Kewl Mooh! ~b.w. (who is sitting by first fire of the "winter" because it's finally cold enough here to warrant the burning of logs!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Jan 07 - 12:48 AM I wasn't being sarcastic. ;-) I was voicing enthusiastic agreement with what you just said. Well, it's as cold as an empty grave on the wrong side of hell out there now. Minus 20 last time I looked. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:41 PM A few more flakes, but my snowshoes are still hanging on a hook on the wall. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:43 PM It hit minus 27 a few days ago. OUCH! The wiener dogs are very demoralized about going outside right now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: 3refs Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:54 PM Finally out on the ice putting a line down a hole! Somebody tell the fish fishing has started! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: pdq Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:57 PM For USers, -27 degrees Celsius = -16.6 degrees Fahrenheit.> Still rather nippy. Here in the sagebrush country of northern Nevada, it will be about 48F high and 18F low. Same as yesterday. That is precisely the seasonal normal for this date. Good time to start garden renovation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: number 6 Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:59 PM It's friggin cold here. No snow, just a dreary cold and wind ... dry .... what I imagine Mongolia must be like. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jan 07 - 01:01 PM You're in northern Nevada, pdq??? Well, I'll be darned. Nice to know where one of my great political opponents is located. ;-) I spent much time around Carlin, Nevada and Elko and that general area during 1977-1980. Had some friends there with common interests. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Charmion Date: 29 Jan 07 - 06:56 PM Ottawa is dark and flippin' frigid. I set off the burglar alarm coming in the door tonight because I couldn't push the teeny little buttons with my numb fingers, or see the little jaspers through my fogged-up spectacles. I'm tired of this sh!t already. Roll on spring. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 03 Feb 07 - 02:41 PM The groundhogs say spring is coming. But I don't believe it. We just fell into deep freeze. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 03 Feb 07 - 06:29 PM Yup, occasional white-outs and -25 with the wind chill, only -15 otherwise. Had a short walk this afternoon, without the dogs, quite refreshing. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Feb 07 - 11:34 PM We appear to have had a frost here in London. It's 4.30am and the streetlights outside show a car covered in spangles and a fox looking severely disgruntled. It was too cold for people to be out tonight so there are no chicken takeaway boxes around for it to forage in. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 04 Feb 07 - 11:41 AM I love the severity sound of minus degrees in Celcius, Mooh. I mean, it is cold out there, but not as cold as if it was Farenheit. If you smile outside today at Yonge and Bloor your teeth will fall out. Liz...there's a London Ontario, too....for a minute there I thought you'd moved across the pond to join us in the colony! Rats. What are you doing with foxes in your area of town? Ours stay mostly in the ravines and cemeteries. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 04 Feb 07 - 01:21 PM Highway closures appear to be an on and off thing today. It was very white at the edge of town an hour ago (I went to look after church). Instead of toddling off to band practice, maybe an afternoon in the shop fixing guitars would be safer. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 04 Feb 07 - 06:25 PM If your band practice is where I think it is, Mooh, then you'd better have stayed in. I'll bet that highway south was treacherous. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 04 Feb 07 - 06:59 PM Bayfield. Winds off the lake will fill in the highway right behind the plough. This weather makes a person regard the world as a little more immediate. It's no wonder the elements figure so much in song, and reminds us of our mortality. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 07 - 07:23 PM I spent half my waking hours today engaged in the glorious pastime of snow removal. Oh, joy! These are the times when I don't have to be reminded what a blessing it is to be born a Canadian. ;-) |
