Okay, you've got your "giant squid", your "colossal squid" - if they discover an even bigger variety, what are they going to call it - your "super-duper god-like squid"?

Question of the day: who said that, and was he describing a giant, colossal or super-duper god-like squid?

I guess this means we'll have to enlarge the Mudcat Tavern's Jello wrestling pit. It already has one giant squid in it.

well - it seems one of the main food sources for colossal squid are giant squid and other squid - so I'm not sure that's a good idea. I suspect that means the Tavern "Giant Squid" is an actual Giant Squid - because he raises a stink anytime anyone mentions calimari!

I think a larger squid than a collossal squid is simply a BFS.

I also think they have ten. Octopots have eight.

This has possibilities for a parody version of "The Squid-Jigging Ground."

Poor Great Uncle Henry. Wondered why I hadn't heard from him in a while. Why can't these Kiwis stick to sheep shagging?

On second thoughts, maybe they were using a sheep as bait. Very partial to a sheep or two was Uncle Henry. Sometimes he ate them too.

If you like squid (besides for eating)PZ Myers, a biology prof, has a wonderful science blog called Pharyngula, that often features stories on squid and octopodes - he's a cephalopodomaniac. Lots of pics of cephalopods in his archives.

Best squid recipe I've eaten: pot of gently simmering beer, bit of garlic and pepper; simmer squiddly bits briefly, eat with a mite of melted butter. Very very tender!

But you'd want a very big pot and a lot of friends over for the OP squid.

I saw a program recently that was put together by a diver who has an interest in squid.

He went right down to the depths and spent a fair amount of time with them.

He found that they were non aggressive and curious creatures, tactile and intelligent, and when it was time for him to go he ended up quite moved by the whole experience.

The documentary was quite moving itself and he went on to explain how they are possibly endangered, though due to their elusiveness this is an unknown factor.

Ultimately, he convinced me to view the kind of thing referred to in this thread as pretty barbaric.

Certainly, the footage of him surrounded by hundreds of Giant squid, yet not in the remotest danger, was quite breathtaking.

Just thought I'd drop that in there.

The key to cooking squid is either cook it very fast...or very very slow. Anything in between is rubbery, but not the kind of rubber squid I collect.

I dunno. I like small succulent squid for eating, although I'd like to try the Humboldt squid (big but not giant) that the West Coast had a run on a year or so ago.

Cuttlefish is good eatin', too. And octopus. I guess I just like tenticles.

Vampyroteuthis infernalis, is probably my favorite non rubber, non dinner type squid -- "vampire squid from hell," -- it has the largest eyes of any animal.

Feel free to add a few more verses.

I do wish the New Zealanders practiced "catch and release." It takes a long time for a squid to grow that large.

The only things that New Zealanders will release are sheep.

Squid and French photographers are fair game as far as they're concerned.

I though squid got to that size really rather fast. All squid have a calcified structure in their body, that are though to have daily growth rings. Mature Males show ranges of 300-420 rings, and females, being larger, somewhat more, implying a life of 1-2 years.

I'm not all that impressed. The squid in the movie "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" (a film about aquatic baseball) was MUCH larger than that. So was the one in "Pirates of the Caribbean II".

That's just a medium-sized squid. Not collosal in the least if you ask me.

I gather from the discussion on Pharyngula that the squid was caught accidentally, and they did discuss releasing it before deciding it was likely too injured to survive. There are great pictures there. The thing really is colossal.

Guest GS, shouldn't that be "cuttlesome". Does Victoria's Secret make Teddys for squids?

Humans have to worry about lipstick on the collar and things that can be hidden or avoided, but I'd think strange sucker marks from a clamdestine molluscan embrace would be a dead giveaway. Best for you folk to be "naughty-less, I suppose....

But for a good read on the subject, try Richard Ellis' "The Search For The Giant Squid" available from Penguin as a paperback. "The Biology and Mythology of the world's most elusive sea creature", it says. I enjoyed it, but I'd like to hear an actual squid's reaction to it, GS.

I contemplated removing my cookie and coming in as a Patagonian Toothfish, but then I thought again and I couldn't be bothered.

All squid are predators. This one ate a LOT of fish to get to this size. Most squid only live one year, but perhaps this one lived longer. They were not fishing for it, it is by-catch.

If you made squid-rings out of this one, they 'would be the size of tractor tyres' and so would need a very large plate.
