Subject: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bill D Date: 23 Feb 07 - 10:19 AM For a limited time only there is a very nice audio editor being given away in a promotion. (17 hours as I type this at about 10AM EST- USA) Go here to start You will be required to obtain a registration code and save it to enter when the program is installed, but you do not have to provide email or personal ID. The program does not provide technical support, but seems pretty easy to fugure out...and sure, they want you to look at all their other programs and become a customer...but...*shrug* It will open & edit most of the common audio formats MP3, OggVorbis, WAV, etc...it has a lot of tricks. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bill D Date: 23 Feb 07 - 10:29 AM Note!- This must be obtained, installed AND registered during the free giveaway period...you can't just download it and wait a couple days to finish the procedure. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Geoff the Duck Date: 23 Feb 07 - 11:32 AM Well - I've downloaded it. Need to decide whether to install - there seem to be different opinions about usefulness on thre "comments" section of the link. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bill D Date: 23 Feb 07 - 11:43 AM Yep...always are varied opinions. There may be better, but this does things that even Audacity doesn't seem to have. I tried several type of files and it seemed to be ok. I didn't conduct detailed tests, as time is limited right now...but I can always UNinstall it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Geoff the Duck Date: 23 Feb 07 - 03:47 PM Well. I've installed it. Must try to find some time to test it out! By the way, minutes back the first link STILL said there is 11 hours left to take up the free offer. Don't know if they are accurate though! Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: SouthernCelt Date: 23 Feb 07 - 05:08 PM I downloaded it and tried it out a bit on a few MP3s on my PC. Has a lot of functionality. Definitely worth the price, :-) SC |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Jack Campin Date: 23 Feb 07 - 08:11 PM Windows-only. Also requires admin permission and Internet connectivity to install and uses DirectX - not a good combination from a security viewpoint, surely? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: JohnInKansas Date: 24 Feb 07 - 02:07 AM No rush, but some might be interested in another (among millions) survey of free software: The Best Free Software ARTICLE DATE: 01.31.07 By Tony Hoffman "Most software is expensive and bloated. Yet free software typically does one task and does it with precision and elegance. Among the thousands of free apps available on the Web, how do you find the best, most reliable ones for your needs? "To produce this story, we asked PC Magazine staffers to share their best-loved free software and were inundated with responses." Included are some AV programs, with comments, some "Productivity" stuff, and a few games. Notable, for some perhaps, are about a dozen FireFox add-ins, that might be of interest. The link is to a magazine article, and they like to make you click through a bunch of "pages," so you can see all the ads. If you click on "Print" at the bottom of the first page you can get it all in one swell foop to scroll through. I'd link direct to the printable view, but I've found that it doesn't work well at this site. At the top right at the link, the table of contents shows a "free software - at a price" entry that's recommended reading, perhaps. One of the editors did get bit by some malware, but the article puts it in context. There's unlikely to be much here that isn't known by those with an interest in freeware, but having a bunch of addys all together might be of interest, and - you might find something new. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Feb 07 - 10:14 AM Well, Darn! I didn't see this thread till today. Thanks Bill D--I rely on you as a source of good free software (and excellent philosophy). I get a daily (more or less) email from C|NET and read them about once a week if the headline catches my eye, but they're full of good stuff. They have a wide range of recommendations and lots of reader comments. http://www.cnet.com/ will get you into their system. I notice that the page doesn't display as well in IE as it does in Firefox. That tells you something right there. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bill D Date: 24 Feb 07 - 11:00 AM SRS (and others) The free version of WavePad that Jimlad mentioned seems to be quite similar to the one-day giveaway. I installed it and opened a few things, but have not tested either extensively yet...(knowing me, I'll keep them both) "The only way to be sure of having enough is to always have a little too much" |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Feb 07 - 11:07 AM Have you compared these to the editors contained in Nero or Roxio? SRS |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bill D Date: 24 Feb 07 - 01:53 PM I've never even attempted to use Nero as a sound editor...only as a burner....and have not tried Roxio. I've used mostly Audicity up to now. ( I'm a big fan of special purpose programs which do one thing well) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: Bernard Date: 24 Feb 07 - 02:39 PM Nero Wave Editor is quite good - especially for noise reduction. I find it a bit 'clunky' for copy/pasting, though. Not quite as bad as CoolEdit/Adobe Audition in that respect...! Everyone finds something that suits their needs - a bit like photo editors - and nothing else feels comfortable. Sometimes you need to use different programmes for their different features, too. It was expensive, but I prefer SoundForge (I'm on v8 now). I can have the job done (check out Ali O'Brien's Sounds of Folk on Radio Britfolk - programme 20 online on Monday) in the time it takes to think about how the others work! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Free audio editor- today only From: katlaughing Date: 26 Feb 07 - 05:34 PM Thanks, again, Bill. I have had a chance to fiddle with it, today. I am feeding in a cassette recording, an oral history from my dad's cousin. I LIKE what I can do in slowing it down so that I can type in the text. Have also been able to amplify nicely, so I am not struggling to hear her voice on the tape. The noise reduction didn't do much, but that's probably my fault. Will have to do some more with it. The small bit of music I fed into it sounded brilliant. Thanks! |
